STEAM SCHOLARSHIPS

STEAM Scholars are fascinated by the world around them and are always looking for better solutions to the problems put in front of them.

STEAM is a multi-disciplinary area of learning consisting of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. The STEAM Scholarship Programme aims to support and challenge Scholars through their time at John Lyon, improving their STEAM skills and in turn acting as motivation to other pupils around them. The programme aims to touch on all eight of our School Values, but with a particular focus on Excellence, Creativity and Innovation.

Eligibility

STEAM Scholarships are awarded to pupils who can demonstrate a passion and aptitude for scientific pursuits and a desire to learn more about how they can apply their knowledge in seeking solutions to real-life problems. A STEAM Scholarship application form should be completed by parents. This application also has a section for the candidate to complete in their own words. STEAM Scholarships are also subject to an interview and assessment day, details of which will be provided to those candidates invited to attend.

Rewards and Expectations

Upon selection, STEAM Scholars will be invited to a special induction day. STEAM Scholars will be invited to spend time in the John Lyon STEAM Laboratory and STEAM Makerspace to observe the range of facilities available to them, from the soldering equipment to the laser cutter, 3D printer and different typesof robots. A STEAM Scholars’ assembly will be held each term.

Every STEAM Scholar will receive a set of individually tailored personal targets on a termly basis, based on their strengths and areas that could be improved upon.

They will benefit from regular meetings with the Head of STEAM, attend a variety of STEAM extra-curricular clubs and workshops in school and be given assistance in seeking out the independent learning of new STEAM skills.

Scholars are expected to attend the weekly CREST Club, enter the STEAM competition every term and regularly update their Scholarship Journal to record their STEAM journey.

Teachers and Mentors

Our STEAM Scholarship Programme is overseen by the Head of STEAM, who sets the overall structure of the programme and keeps the central record of Scholars’ progress.

The Head of STEAM will offer each Scholar 1:1 guidance and support and will review progress, monitor entries into Scholarship Journals, assess levels of commitment, set future targets and provide written feedback, termly to the Head of Scholars and annually to parents.
