STET FORTUNA DOMUS
Our mission is to empower every child to develop individual character, happiness and talent.
Our mission is to empower every child to develop individual character, happiness and talent.
John Lyon is north-west London’s leading co-educational, all-through 2 to 18, independent school.
We are proud to serve families in Harrow-on-the-Hill, Harrow, London, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire by offering a world-class School experience for pupils from age 2 in our Little Lyons Nursery to age 18 sitting A-Levels and our Goldhawk Diploma in Sixth Form. John Lyon is a happy, warm and progressive community.
The School enjoys a richly deserved reputation for providing an excellent all-round education and outstanding pastoral care. We believe that the opportunities pupils experience through our Academic studies, Extra-curricular, Co-curricular and Excellence Programmes are equally important. Our pupils are equipped with the skills and experiences they will need to help them succeed in life at School and beyond. Pupils in our vibrant and inclusive co-ed environment experience a diverse learning community in which they all thrive.
John Lyon School sits within John Lyon’s Foundation, with John Lyon’s Charity – who distribute around £12m in grants to children and young people in London each year – and alongside the Harrow Family of Schools, which includes Harrow
School and Harrow International Schools around the world.
Pupils benefit from these close links and regularly take part in Harrow Family of Schools events such as international exchange trips, sports tours, competitions, conferences and lessons streamed with partner schools. Staff collaborate with colleagues all over the world to develop best practice and exchange ideas and resources. We are proud to be part of this diverse and innovative global educational community.
We embrace technology and put it at the forefront of all that we do to enhance learning and collaborative working. As a ‘Microsoft Showcase School’, we are one of a small number of UK schools that are part of a global community of schools engaged in educational digital transformation.
We admit pupils at 2+, 3+, 4+ and 7+ in our Prep School and 11+, 13+ and 16+ in our Senior School. Whilst we have a growing waiting list, we can accept new joiners for occasional places mid-year or during a nonstandard entry point when spaces become available.
On Friday afternoons, John Lyon pupils put down their books to take part in the Co-Curricular Programme, which is themed around the School’s eight core values and seeks to give pupils a sense of achievement, wellbeing and enjoyment while learning practical skills. It is an integral part of a John Lyon education, designed to complement student learning by introducing pupils to new things and activities that help develop beneficial life skills.
In 2020, John Lyon amalgamated with what was then called Quainton Hall Prep, located in central Harrow, to become an all-through School. The Prep has since been rebranded as the Prep School of John Lyon. We became co-educational at Senior level welcoming our first cohort of girls in September 2021. We will be fully co-educational from September 2025.
Year 7 and 8 take part in a carousel of activities that includes cooking, golf, handicraft, archery, kayaking, mindfulness and dance. By the end of the academic year, all Year 7 pupils will have performed a drama piece on stage and Year 8 will have completed their Bronze CREST award.
Founded in 1876 by the governors of Harrow School, John Lyon School was up until recently an 11 to 18 senior independent HMC boys’ day school in Harrow-onthe-Hill, with maximum capacity for 600 pupils. At John Lyon, every pupil matters.
Year 9 work alongside pupils in the Upper School and choose from activities including sports leadership, chess, architecture, photography, origami and yoga. They will also be introduced to the Combined Cadet Force (CCF) programme, with which they will either continue into Year 10 or move on to the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.
The School has its own Governing Body, alongside oversight from the John Lyon’s Foundation Governing Body
The School’s motto is ‘Stet Fortuna Domus’, which translates from Latin to ‘May the fortune of the house stand’. This motto is shared with Harrow School and many of our John Lyon’s Foundation schools around the world.
In the Sixth Form, we place greater emphasis on leadership, offering students the opportunity to plan and deliver their own activities alongside members of staff, or to volunteer within the local community. Currently, 85% of the Sixth Form take part in volunteering activities.
The School is a friendly and purposeful place with humble yet ambitious pupils. We support each pupil to pursue their unique strengths and passions. We pride ourselves on providing an enriching, supportive, and challenging experience for every pupil, while promoting a culture of academic excellence, personal responsibility and respect.
