JLx is a series of 15 minute highly informative sessions each run by a different department, which aim to share with pupils some exciting aspects of their disciplines. All JLx talks will take place in the STEAM Lab.

At each Academic Society event, four John Lyon pupils will present 5 10 minutes academic talks on a topic of their choice.This is an opportunity for pupils to develop their presentation skills, and to learn from their peers about a variety of topics.

PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION | Y7-U6
House Photography Competition
Deadline for submissions Tuesday 2nd November
2021 House Photography Competition is based on an image which reflects “Science and Nature”
Entries: Need to be an original Photograph taken by you, however you can edit it
Guidance: Consider issues which are personal, local or global which reflect the connection between science and nature.
Submissions: Need to be linked to the theme and your interpretations of it. Please submit a high resolution photograph of your entry to the Art Department by the deadline.

STEAM CHRISTMAS COMPETITION | Y7-U6 Space Lander Challenge
Deadline for submissions Monday 6th December
This year ‘s winter challenge is to create a lander to safely keep two marshmallows or ping pong balls inside a paper cup as it is dropped from various heights.
Entries: You will want to attach the paper cup to some sort of landing platform.You will need to make sure the landing is as smooth as possible. Something in your design will have to take shock absorption into account.
Submissions: Landers to be submitted to Dr Weinberg by Monday 7th December
Testing: Space landers will be tested in the STEAM Lab. Further details will be published nearer the time.
Winner: The 2021 John Lyon STEAM prize will be awarded to the pupil who designs the lander that keeps the marshmallows inside the cup when dropped from the highest point.

HISTORY COMPETITION | Y7-U6
Deadline for submissions – Tuesday 7th December
Challenge: Write an essay answering the following question:
How much can we learn about history from the study of influential women?
Winning criteria: Prizes will be awarded where the demands of the question have been thought through and relevant own knowledge is deployed to support any assertions made.
Winners: One prize for each of the following categories: Y7 Y9, Y10 Y11, Sixth Form.
How to submit? Submissions need to be sent electronically to Mr Longhurst: CKL@johnlyon.org. Handwritten work can be scanned and emailed.
DRAMA COMPETITION | Y7-U6 Monologue Challenge
Deadline for submissions – Friday 15th October
Challenge Write, film or record an original monologue with a view to it being performed on stage. The monologue can be on any chosen theme, topic or issue of your choice and can be presented in any style or form.
Submission format:
• It must be written in the first person, be typed onto one side of A4 with a maximum font size of 12.
• In addition, students may also record themselves performing their monologue or submit a voice recording in the style of a podcast.
• The recording must be between two and four minutes.
Winning criteria: Prizes will be awarded on creativity, characterisation and suitability to the brief.
Winners: One prize will be awarded for each of the following categories: Y7-Y9, Y10 & Y11, Sixth Form
NB: The recording does not have to be the same student who wrote the monologue, it can be anyone they choose, although they may of course choose to perform it themselves.
