All-Valley Honorees

You know, we really do have the greatest jobs in the world.

Each day of each year, we have the privilege of watching your children and grandchildren compete on the field of play. We witness their triumphs. We’re there when they fall short. And we continue to chronicle their careers as they pick themselves up and succeed again.

We’re all about covering prep sports, and we believe the Ohio Valley is one of the best places in the country to watch that happen.

To help mark our coverage of high school

sports and our commitment to highlighting the young men and women of the Ohio Valley, this year we decided to do something different with our All-Valley teams. In past years, following the end of a season, our staff would sit down and compile the top performers for that sport, and we would run a congratulatory page in our Weekend Edition. Those always have been well-received, but as we discussed our All-Valley squads this year, we wanted to do something really special. That’s when we came up with the idea for a section to honor all our All-Valley athletes at the same time — and we present

that to you, today.

Inside, find hundreds of photos and information on those youngsters who performed above and beyond during the fall and winter sports seasons. We are so excited to offer this commemorative look at what’s taken place so far this school year.

Jillian Huffman, left, was named the OVAC Class 5A Player of the Year after leading the Patriots to the regional tournament. She will continue her athletic and academic careers at West Liberty University as a member of the volleyball team.

Girls BasketBall

ALEXIS BORDAS WHEELING PARK HIGH SCHOOL

Wheeling Park’s Alexis Bordas has been one of West Virginia’s premiere players since her freshman year, and a superb junior season has earned her a spot as a captain on the girls basketball All-Valley team. Now a two-time Mary Ostrowski Award recipient after being named W.Va. Co-Player of the Year along with Cameron’s Ashlynn Van Tassell, Bordas brought home a W.Va. Class AAAA state title for Park, its first since 1999, and was named tournament MVP. Bordas averaged 23.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game for the 24-4 Patriots. A first-team all-state player each of her first three years, Bordas could have more in store in her upcoming senior season.

Wheeling

This junior guard provided a powerful punch on a loaded Patriots team, averaging 16.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 3.2 steals per game for the state champs. Woods made her third straight appearance on the W.Va. Class AAAA all-state teams, her second first-team selection.

McKenna Scott

Indian Creek

This multi-tool guard was named to the Ohio D-II all-state second team after a season in which she averaged 16.3 points, 6.4 assists and 5.3 steals per game for Creek, leading her team in all three categories.

Cameron

This senior point guard has delighted fans in the stands with impressive passes on the way to becoming the alltime assist leader at Cameron this past season. Clutter always steps up in the big games, and is a four time W.Va. all-state selection for the three-peating Dragons.

Natalie Daugherty

This sharp-shooting guard was a W.Va. all-state first-team performer this past season for the state champion Patriots, averaging 14.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, four assists and 2.6 steals per game for the Park squad.

ASHLYNN VAN TASSELL CAMERON HIGH SCHOOL

A dominant force on the hardwood, Cameron’s Ashlynn Van Tassell has made plenty of history throughout her career, earning her a spot as a captain on the girls basketball All-Valley team. Van Tassell became the school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder in her senior season, averaging 19 points and 13.3 rebounds per game for the 23-5 Dragons. The four-time all-state center helped lead Cameron to its third straight title, and Van Tassell was named W.Va. Class A state tournament MVP. Sharing the Mary Ostrowski Player of the Year Award with Wheeling Park’s Alexis Bordas this season, Van Tassell’s next step is Youngstown State, where she will be playing collegiately.

Union Local

This senior was honored as a D-III All-Ohio first team all-stater, and averaged 19 points per game for the 19-7 Jets, leading them to a Division III East District title game appearance.

Steubenville

This sophomore stood out among a talented Big Red squad that made a run to the D-II Eastern District championship, averaging 18.5 points and 8.6 rebounds while shooting 55% from the field. An Ohio D-II all-state third-team selection, McShan has impressed in a short time.

Wheeling Central Catholic

A formidable scorer and rebounder, this junior powered the 17-9 Maroon Knights to a W.Va. state tournament semifinals appearance, and averaged 23.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game while shooting upwards of 50 percent. Blake was named a W.Va. Class AA all-state first-team selection.

An offensively gifted guard, this senior averaged 20 points per game and earned a spot on the Ohio D-IV all-state second team as the leader of the 21-4 Pilots, who made it to the Division IV East

AIDEN DAVIS WHEELING PARK HIGH SCHOOL

Just a junior, Aiden Davis already has his name on the top of numerous Wheeling Park all-time records.

He is on pace to surpass the 2,000-point plateau next season (he currently has 1,510) and can set multiple all-time career marks.

He was a W.Va. Class AAAA first-team all-state selection this season when he averaged 25.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists — all teamhighs — and knocked down 89 three-point goals.

Mykel Davis

Wheeling Park

A superb three-sport standout who is headed to West Virginia University as a preferred walk-on to play football, Davis was named to the W.Va. Class AAAA all-tournament team. He averaged 13.9 points, 5.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists this past season.

This junior led the Seminoles to their best season in program history as he averaged 19.9 points, 10.7 rebounds and six assists per outing. He was a co-Eastern District Player of the Year and second-team all-Ohio Division IV.

Eli Sancomb

Wheeling Central Catholic

Just a sophomore, Sancomb scored at a 19.2-point clip and grabbed 8.2 rebounds in leading the Maroon Knights to the W.Va. Class AA state tournament. He missed a few games with a broken hand, but returned for the state tournament and still earned second team all-state status.

Weir

A W.Va. Class AAA first team allstate selection, Cross led the Red Riders with a 26.9 scoring norm. He also grabbed 4.5 rebounds per contest.

COLE THOBURN ST. CLAIRSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL

Cole Thoburn set numerous program records during his senior campaign at St. Clairsville that resulted in a Ohio Division II All-State second-team selection.

The Red Devils senior surpassed the 1,000-point milestone while moving atop the school’s all-time three-point field goal list.

He averaged 23.3 points a game. He was honorable mention all state as a junior.

Will Taylor

The Linsly School

Taylor was the straw that stirred the Cadets’ drink as he scored 10.3 points, grabbed 2.8 rebounds and handed out three assists a night. Linsly went 25-2 to enjoy its best season in program history. The senior shot 52% from the floor, 40% from behind the three-point arc and 78% from the foul line.

Wheeling Central Catholic Burlenski was the captain of the W.Va. Class AA all-state second team after averaging 11.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists. He was asked to take on more of a role of a leader this season and served that role well.

This 6-6 junior is drawing all kind of attention from colleges — in football, as well — after averaging 25.9 points and pulling down 10.2 rebounds a night. He was a tri-Eastern District Player of the Year and a second-team Division III all-stater.

This 6-6 Dragon senior was a first team W.Va. Class A all-stater as Cameron reached the state tournament for a third consecutive season. He averaged 17.9 points, 11.6 rebounds and had 23 double-doubles in 26 games.

Big School FootBall

Isaac Hill was a terror on the perimeter this year as a wide receiver for the Steubenville Big Red, earning him a spot as a captain on the bigschool football All-Valley team. Hill (6-foot-4, 210 pounds), a senior, played a key role as a wide receiver in Big Red’s run to back-to-back Division IV state final four appearances, finishing this season as a D-IV All-Ohio first-team selection and the Ohio Prep Sports Writers Association East District Offensive Player of the Year.

Sabron Felton

Steubenville

This wide receiver and linebacker helped Big Red to a state final four, turning it up in the postseason where he caught a touchdown and ripped a 60-yard kick return against Licking Valley.

Savier Faulks Steubenville

A dynamite runner, this senior running back topped 1,000 yards for the second straight year, going over 1,200 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns for his team. Faulks was an all-state honorable mention running back.

Peyton Gorby Steubenville

This fearsome defensive lineman keeps racking up the honors after being named to the All-OVAC first team, Eastern District first team and the All-Ohio D-IV third team.

Tyler Wise Brooke

This state wrestling champion was also a people-mover in the trenches for the Bruins, earning all-state second-team distinctions in W.Va. Class AAA.

Lucas Thomas

Harrison Cent.

A stalwart center for the Huskies with 33 career starts, this senior totaled 49 tackles, nine tackles for loss and three sacks on defense to boot and was a D-V second-team All-State offensive lineman in Ohio.

Cam McAfee

Harrison Cent.

A top DB, this junior came down with nine interceptions, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries along with 84 tackles. A 44-yard kick return average included a pair of return touchdowns this season.

Captains

On either side of the ball, few players got the better of Wheeling Park senior Mykel Davis this year, earning him a spot as a captain on the big-school football All-Valley team. Davis (6-foot-2, 180 pounds) excelled as a wide receiver, cornerback and kick returner for the Patriots, being named to the WVSWA All-State first team and helping Park to a 7-3 record and playoff berth. Davis amassed 828 yards and 11 touchdowns on 39 receptions while recording an interception on defense and a kick return touchdown on special teams.

This pinpoint passer threw for 2,446 yards and 28 touchdowns in a junior season that saw him earn All-W.Va. honorable mentions in Class AAA.

Zion McGee Indian Creek

This junior topped 1,000 rushing yards this year and scored six touchdowns on the ground for Creek’s offense, and wrapped up 70 tackles, finishing with eight for loss and one sack.

Mykel Quito Harrison Cent.

This junior was a true lead back for the Huskies, taking 217 carries for 1,451 yards and 22 touchdowns, being rewarded with firstteam eastern district and D-V All-Ohio third-team honors.

Anthony Zorbini

This senior Washington and Jefferson college commit was named to the W.Va. Class AA all-state second-team offensive line.

Parker Hutton

Harrison Cent.

This senior broke nearly every receiving record in Huskies history in 2023, finishing with 729 yards on 49 catches, and reeling in 14 touchdowns. He also had 70 tackles and five interceptions on defense.

Corey Lyons Weir

This dynamic runner sprinted onto the W.Va AllState first team in Class AA, tallying 1,157 yards and 23 touchdowns on 179 carries for an 11-2 Red Riders squad.

The St. Clairsville Red Devils’ Dino Burk was a powerful driving force in the backfield this year, with the junior tailback putting together a 2023 season worthy of earning him a spot as a captain on the big-school football All-Valley team. Burk (5-foot-9, 185 pounds) brought the three keys to St. C.’s rushing attack — speed, power and vision — in compiling a gaudy stat line of 1,500 rushing yards on a 9.15 yards per carry clip, 24 rushing touchdowns and one kick return touchdown in 11 games for the 9-3 Red Devils.

A two-year starter for the Patriots, this Glenville State commit has paved the way for the Park rushing attack and shut down the opposition’s, earning second-team allstate honors along the offensive line.

Maverick Lemasters

John Marshall

A powerful tailback, this junior pounded out 1,248 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns, adding a touchdown catch. He also had 57 solo tackles and two sacks at linebacker.

Brennan Stout

St. Clairsville

The Washington and Lee commit was a D-IV All-Ohio third-team honoree and finished with 113 total tackles, 72 solo stops and seven tackles for loss. Led a defense which allowed just over 250 total yards and 15 points on average.

Andreas Hunter

John Marshall

This senior was part of a formidable Monarch offensive line, grading out at 87% on the year. A preferred walk-on at WVU, the big man also had a pick-six on defense.

JR Adams St. Clairsville

This two-way standout signed with Mercyhurst University as a D-lineman, and was named D-IV All-Ohio honorable mention along the offensive line. He finished with 43 total tackles and three sacks this year.

Brody Saccoccia Steubenville

This junior safety led an iron-fisted Big Red defense in tackles this year, being honored on the D-IV All-Ohio first team and topping 130 tackles in helping his team to the state final four.

Amare Johnson

Wheeling Park

This sophomore tallied over 1,200 scrimmage yards and 15 touchdowns in his first year starting for the 7-3 Patriots. The All-W.Va. Class AAA honorable mention is dangerous as a runner and receiver.

Griffin Fogle St. Clairsville

This 275-pound senior signed with West Virginia University this year after wrapping up a season which included an 87% blocking grade and 40 pancake blocks, third most in program history in a single season.

Small School Football

Kovalesky was a terror on defense for the Cadets from his middle linebacker position. He was the team’s leading tackler with more than 100 stops. He also served as a blocking fullback at times. He will continue his academic and athletic careers as a preferred walk-on at West Virginia University next fall. He will play fullback for the Mountaineers.

Mac Mac Pettigrew

Bellaire

This fleet-footed senior did just about everything for the Big Reds. He was an Ohio Division VI second-team selection at defensive back. He also ran the ball, caught the ball and returned kicks.

Colson Wichterman Cameron

A four-year letterman for the Dragons, this senior was a twoway standout. He ran for more than 1,000 yards and passed for more than 1,000 in earning all-state and all-OVAC honors.

Tev’n Williams

Martins Ferry

A second-team all-Ohio Division VI running back, Williams led the Purple Riders to the playoffs. He was also an all-OVAC Class 3A selection.

Kabel Isaly River

The Pilot senior signal-caller was named to the Division VII second-team all-state list and the OVAC Class 2A first team. He threw for nearly 2,000 yards this season and was a fouryear letterman.

Hank Johnson

Barnesville

One of the senior leaders in the trenches for the Shamrocks, Johnson earned second team all-state in Division V as an offensive lineman. He was also all-OVAC Class 3A.

Malte Feil Linsly

A multi-talented athlete for the Cadets, he played tight end and handled the punting and kicking duties this past fall. He was also an all-OVAC Class 3A honoree.

Captains

Reese was a first-team all-Ohio Division VI selection as a defensive end. He was also an Eastern District co-Defensive Player of the Year after racking up 86 tackles, 13 quarterback sacks, a whopping 34 tackles for lost yardage and caused three fumbles, recovering two of them. He also is a standout basketball player, averaging a double-double. He is just a junior.

Brayden Rauch Steub. Catholic This Crusader senior was first-team all-Ohio Division VII as a linebacker. He was also allOVAC.

Klypsan Wallace Cameron

Playing his senior year with the Dragons, Wallace was a dual threat on both sides of the ball. He rushed for more than 1,000 yards and led the team in tackles. He was all-W.Va. and all-OVAC.

Tucker Howell Monroe Central

He was voted the Division VI co-Eastern District Offensive Player of the Year and was a second-team allstate selection as a quarterback. He ran for more than 1,000 yards and passed for another 1,000-plus for the Seminoles.

Aiden Filby

Toronto

This Red Knight was a Ohio Division VII first-team allstate defensive back. He was also allOVAC Class 2A.

Jamie Reigel Linsly

A two-way standout for the Cadets as an offensive lineman and defensive tackle, Reidel earned all-OVAC Class 3A honors.

Johnny Sabinski Union Local

A huge part of the Jets’ turnaround during his career, this senior offensive lineman had numerous pancake blocks. He will attend the University of Louisville on a track scholarship.

OATES

Carpenter, a junior lefty, enjoyed a first-team allstate Division V season this past fall as he passed for more than 2,000 yards, setting school records for passing yardage and touchdowns in a season. He also excelled as an outside linebacker, picking off four passes as the Shamrocks advanced to the regional semifinals.

Marshall Meade

Barnesville

This two-way junior lineman was all-Ohio first-team Division V as a defensive end. He also doubled as an offensive lineman for the powerful Shamrocks offense.

Hines

Only a sophomore, this Shamrock was voted to the Ohio Division V first team as a linebacker. He was also first team all-OVAC Class 3A.

Braden McWreath

Whg. Central This junior running back led the Maroon Knights in rushing. He was all-W.Va. and allOVAC. He was also a standout on defense and as a kick/ punt returner.

Dom Bouscher Toronto

This senior running back/defensive back was one of the Red Knights’ stalwarts. He was second team allOhio Division VII as a running back and was all-OVAC Class 2A.

Hunter Oates

Magnolia

This junior was one of the reasons the Blue Eagles started to turn things around in 2023. He was a standout on both sides of the ball as a running back and free safety.

Peyton Rauch Steub. Catholic

This junior was second-team allOhio Division VII as a defensive lineman. He was also all-OVAC Class 2A.

Wheeling Central

This Maroon Knight senior excelled as a placekicker in his four years. He was 148 of 155 on career PATs and perfect on six field goal attempts. He will attend West Liberty University.

Taison Starr Barnesville

Another two-way standout for the Shamrocks, Starr ran for more than 1,000 yards and was one of the leading tacklers on defense. He will attend Marietta University in the fall.

Stephen duplicated his Ohio Division III state 150-pound title of 2023 in March when he concluded a 54-3 season in 2024. He was a sectional and district champion, as well. He will continue his academic and athletic careers at Cleveland State University.

Skyler King Barnesville

This senior claimed the Ohio Division III 157-pound state championship to become a threetime all-Ohioan. He finished his senior season at 54-3. He was also an OVAC Ron Mauck champion, as well as a sectional and district kingpin.

Karson Milhoan

Barnesville A two-time Ohio Division III state qualifier, Milhoan advanced to the OVAC Ron Mauck Tournament finals at 144 pounds before falling to Steubenville’s Cooper Smith. He was a sectional and district champion.

This sophomore claimed the W.Va. Class A/AA 215-pound state championship, finishing with a superb record of 54-1. He was second in the OVAC Ron Mauck Tournament.

Eliana Winfrey Tyler Consolidated Winfrey joined her older brother, Sean, on the podium with her championship at 145 pounds. She pinned her way to the title.

Talk about a strong start to your high school golf career. St. Clairsville High School’s Olivia Baker, just a sophomore, already is racking up the accolades on the links and finished the 2023 season with a trip to the state tournament in Columbus. Her future appears very bright.

Adam Gill of The Linsly School capped his junior season with a runaway victory at the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference’s 3A Golf Championships, firing a 3-under 69 at Oglebay’s Crispin Course. He also joined seven other West Virginia golfers in taking part in the 2023 Mid-Atlantic Junior Invitational.

What a year for Ohio Valley swimmers in the pool! Our captains this year distinguished themselves both by their performance and also their leadership. Wheeling Park High School senior Abby Heilman capped off an excellent four-year career with an individual OVAC title in January and also a pair of top-five finishes in the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission State Swim Meet in Morgantown.

May blazed his way to a fourth-place finish in the Ohio State championships in the 50 freestyle and then a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle — an incredible accomplishment.

“Playing at Park was always really fun, I got to play with my friends, and our freshman year in 2020 we won a state championship,” Delk said during an earlier interview. “I was lucky enough to break school records for all-time scoring and single-season scoring. It’s just been really fun and along with my club team in Pittsburgh it’s also just been a huge development for me as a player.”

This is Delk’s third year as an All-Valley captain. She also has been named to the West Virginia All-State team four times, a four-time All-Valley selection, allOVAC three times, and was named the 2021 WVSWA State Player of the Year.

Returning this year as our All-Valley boys soccer captain is talented Wheeling Park High School junior Tresz McLeod, the reigning Player of the Year in West Virginia. With a knack for finding the back of the net, McLeod led Park last season with 25 goals and 13 assists.

He’s gearing up for a senior campaign that Park fans believe will lead to a state tournament bid.

In selecting him as player of the year, the West Virginia High School Soccer Coaches’ Association noted McLeod’s ball control, his scoring, his tenacity and also his leadership on the field. McLeod also received the distinction of Region Player of the Year in 2023.

news, McLeod expressed his surprise, stating, “All the hard work paid off. Seeing my name as a junior getting chosen to be the player of the year is pretty crazy to me.”

During his junior year, McLeod played a crucial role in leading the Patriots to another OVAC championship. The Park boys came up just short of making the state tournament this year.

Over the course of his three seasons, McLeod has accumulated a remarkable 77 goals and 42 assists, placing him among the school’s leaders in goals and total points.

As he enters his senior season, McLeod’s exceptional track record highlights his talent and potential for continued success in the future.

This year’s Ohio Valley Cross Country season could be a tale of the young —and the not so young. For the girls, John Marshall freshman Zoe Zervos is leading a youth-filled Monarch group of runners poised to dominate the state’s XC scene for years to come. Zervos was crowned the 2023 OVAC XC champion.

On the other side of the aisle is Wheeling Central senior Aiden Scott, a two-time WVSSAC Class A state cross-country champion. Scott finished his high school career with a top 5 finish at this year’s state meet, following back-to-back wins in 2021 and 2022.
