Stoke & Sheffield The Sugarmill 19/3/15 & The Leadmill 20/3/15

The first Johnny Marr gig of 2015 was always set to be something special. Commencing a series of warm-up gigs preceding the Teenage Cancer Trust event, Johnny’s show at Stoke-on-Trent’s intimate Sugarmill venue sold out in a recordbreaking 15 minutes, which is pretty solid proof of how eager his fans in the UK (and in some cases, even beyond) were for another fix of Marr. Despite the short break from touring, Johnny and the band were as tight and energetic as ever, treating the audience to one of their most intense shows in a while. For UK fans it was also the first opportunity to see Johnny perform his cover of Depeche Mode’s ‘I Feel You’, which is - dare I say it - even better than the original. The reintroduction of ‘The Queen Is Dead’ to the set was also a highlight - it was only when the song ended that I realised I’d been holding my breath in awe the whole time. If tonight was anything to judge by, 2015 is going to be another amazing year for the Playland tour.

You can imagine the excitement brewing in the North West when Johnny announced he would be playing Liverpool, as part of a mini warm-up tour, in preparation for his Teenage Cancer Trust gig. The Sun shone bright on the bricks of The Arts Club, that Wednesday afternoon, on 25th March. The usual suspect fans would queue from midday for a chance to meet the man himself. Some wanting photographs, some wanting records signed. Whatever their reason, they waited patiently for him to pull up at the side door, which is when the Worshiping began. After a swift sound check, the doors finally opened at 7:30pm. People would rush to get to the barrier, or as close as. The venue began to fill out very quickly. Finally, the wait was over. Johnny burst onto the stage like the “Boss” he is, opening his show with Playland, which proved a favourite among the crowd; as did his Smiths classic, panic. By this point the temperature had rocketed and to say the air was damp was an understatement. His set also included his rendition of the Depeche Mode hit “I Feel You” (Better than the original) which instantly saw hair swishing and hips shaking. Johnny continued to charm his audience with endless hits, including floor filler “Getting Away With It”. What stood out to me the most was the relationship between him and his very talented band members, and how much fun they appeared to be having together. This reflected the mood of the crowd, who embraced every second of his encore, which was made up of two hits from his latest LP Playland and two Smiths classics. The show came to an end with “How Soon Is Now?” and just like every other time I’ve seen him play it, you look around and find everyone in a trance like state, as if under some kind of mystical Marr spell.

How would you explain how it feels to be at a Johnny Marr gig to somebody who’s never experienced one? It’s play and therapy and religion all rolled into one. It’s being lifted to another level, far beyond the mundanity of everyday life. It’s escapism. It’s transcendance. It’s being thrust entirely into the moment and out of it at the same time, into a world where it feels like music really can save lives. It heals us. It frees us.

Johnny Marrvellous charity postcards sold as a fundraiser for the Teenage Cancer Trust in the weeks leading up to the show.

Seeing Johnny perform in aid of such a wonderful cause at the beautiful Royal Albert Hall was an incredibly moving experience. There would be so few people in this world whose lives haven’t been touched by cancer in one way or another, and being able to combine the wonderful-as-always experience of a Johnny Marr show with supporting The Teenage Cancer Trust made for a very special night.

Montevideo & Buenos Aires La Trastienda 15/6/15 & Niceto Club 17/6/15

When Johnny announced the news of his South-American tour, I was just returning home after a long, horrible day at school. I’ve just failed miserably again on my Math test and got told off by my teacher. Wish I could leave school for poetry! Crank up 25 Hours. I set mind on the upcoming shows. I smiled as I glanced down my Johnny Fuckin Marr shirt (which got me in trouble in school yet again). Super excited I told the old lady next to me on the bus that Johnny is the best guitarist ever and that he’ll be coming to see us fans in Montevideo soon. She just gave me a weird look and I think she said something about Keith Richards. Weird. That very day: I’ve already picked my outfit for the gig and even splurged on new shoes. I hope my idol approves.

Well, its my second time watching Johnny's show. The first time was in a sideshow of Lollapalooza last year. Amazing gig. Just like this year. An energetic gig full of feelings and memories with The Smiths anthems. He's the most charismatic and charming man I've ever met. He hugged me and posed to the photo hahaha. And he looked so impressed when I said to him "Johnny, The Smiths saved my life".

Wakefield Warehouse 23, 9/7/15 Johnny had been announced as support for his good friend Noel Gallagher in Castlefield, Manchester on 11th July; in the couple of days leading up to it, he would play Warehouse23 in Wakefield on the 9th and Nottingham’s Rescue Rooms on the 10th. Having been told time and time again that Yorkshire crowds are good ones, imagine my excitement for Wakefield... I was not disappointed! Johnny was on excellent form, darting, bouncing, hip-swinging here and there. Warehouse23 was so hot and stuffy (‘I’ve just got back from South America, it wasn’t as hot as this place’), one could see the sweat dripping down the Jaguar! The setlist was wonderful; ‘Easy Money,’ ‘The Right Thing Right’, ‘The It-Switch’, ‘Back in the Box’ and so many more were played from the solo back catalogue, and thankfully his cover of ‘I Feel You’ was still in there for the encore. Smiths fans were treated to renditions of ‘Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want’, ‘The Headmaster Ritual’, and of course, ‘How Soon Is Now’. This particular gig marked the live debut of two new songs, the energetic ‘My Monster’ and another called ‘Spiral Cities’, which is unbelievably catchy and could be one of my favourite Johnny Marr songs yet – here’s hoping it’s played during the October tour... Walking out seeing people’s hair plastered to their faces and taking deep breaths of cool fresh air, one could say with confidence, ‘That was a good ‘un.’

Nottingham This was quite literally a scorcher of a gig. Normally on a night this hot the mere thought of willingly stepping inside a venue bereft of airconditioning would be laughable - but tonight there was no place I’d rather be than the steamy sauna that was the Rescue Rooms. As always, Johnny gave an incredible performance, and we were lucky to be treated to two brand-spankingnew songs, “My Monster” and “Spiral Cities”. (Both sublime, although I must confess a particular infatuation with the latter.) Johnny onstage was his usual playful, charismatic self - and despite the uncomfortable heat, as professional as always, not even letting the need for multiple shirt changes slow down the pace of the show. What a man. What a night. Bring on October... - Bernadette Rumsen

“Is it hot in here or is it just Johnny?”

Towards the end of “The re is a light that never goes out”, John ny was standing right in front of me, so terrifyingly close that I could inhale every note he played. On the final flourish of his tremolo ar m, a handful of sweat flew in my direct ion and some of it landed on my bottom lip. After a moment’s consideration, I did what any fan would have done. Unsu rprisingly it tasted of guitars… - Caroline Leggott

SUMMER in the city Castlefield Bowl, Manchester - 11/7/15

A sunny day in Manchester. Sounds like a dream. Add Johnny Marr into it and it’s a downright fantasy! The sun came out, bathing the slinky guitarist in a heavenly glow, as he confidently moved like a black panther onstage. A string of adrenaline bullets blasted from his beautiful signature Jag. His contagious smile infects me, and I’m smiling wide enough to fit a banana sidewides down my mouth. I used to be pretty shy, but Johnny inspired me to pick up the guitar myself and start socializing with fellow musicians. We’re still pretty crap and our cheapo amp just konked up on us last week - but I know that one day I’m gonna be great just like him (I already got a good jacket for the job). Johnny’s old classics and new songs get my new friends and I jumping around like loony toons. We’re having super beautiful fun and we’re inspired to get back to my room and write down our first number one hit. Woohoo!

Auckland & Perth The Powerstation 16/7/15 & Metropolis Fremantle 18/7/15

From The Smiths days, Johnny Marr has always kept his spirit of youthfulness alive and kicking. He’s a human hurricane with a great haircut. Encased in devilishly tight jeans and flashing a gorgeous smile, he takes the stage. It’s the first time Johnny had played in Perth as a solo artist, and just a few notes into the gig, I know it was worth the wait. The rest of the audience clearly feels the same. Hands raised in unison, in attempt for a fleeting touch of an idol, or some sort of guitar-playing magic rubbed off on to some of the guitarheads on the front row. Johnny is a playful, energtic ball of contagious fire. I’m half his age and I find myself out of breath to trying to keep up with his onstage swagger and jumping jacks. Our eyes meet during some of the songs, my heart nearly halts as I catch the golden twinkle in his eyes. My head tells me it’s the stage lights reflecting but my heart knows it’s the spirit of youth. For a split second we both connect and it’s a universal (un)spoken language of love. Music. - Lachlan Cooper

Sydney & Adelaide

Enmore Theatre 20/7/15 & The Gov 21/7/15

In August 1989, my best mate Suse and I went to the The The concert at the Horden Pavilion in Sydney when we were 17 years old. And here Suse and me were, 26 years later (with a few friends and my younger brother) at the ole Enmore Theatre, fortunate again to see the legend, Johnny Fuckin’ Marr! No one cared it was a cold, wet Monday night! There were people of all ages in the audience. The anticipation before Johnny came on stage was electrifying. There was lots of love in the air even before the gig began! When Johnny walked on stage in his red and white polka dot shirt, black jeans and jacket and of course as always a very cool haircut, there was a roar from the crowd as he started with Playland. Panic followed and that was it – the crowd went absolutely bonkers! Total strangers had their arms around each other jumping up and down and singing out loud, “It says nothing to me about my life, hang the blessed DJ because the music they constantly play…..Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ….” It almost bought the roof off – and it was only the second song! The Right Thing, Easy Money, 25 Hours and New Town Velocity followed and the audience knew every word. And how great is Johnny’s voice – who would have known that the man could sing so well! The show finished with How Soon Is Now – to hear Johnny play this song live on his guitar (and for me the first time ever ) I think is now a life highlight for every single person at the Enmore that evening. The whole audience left the gig on a real high – and I honestly did not come off it for about two weeks after! There was a feeling at the start of this gig that it was going to be something special; a celebration of Johnny, his music and his fans – and that is exactly what it was.

Melbourne & Byron Bay The Forum 22/7/15 and Splendour In The Grass Festival 24/7/15 The house lights finally fade to black at 9PM. A roar of excitement rises up from the crowd as the prerecorded noise of an arcade rattles over the PA, illicit and alluring. The bleeps and bloops of pinball and pokies reach a climax as Doviak, Iwan and Jack walk on to the stage. They take their places, and Jack breaks into the rumbling beat of ‘Playland.’ A few bars later, the immediately recognisable silhouette of Johnny is visible marching in at stage right: black mod hair with a beehive-ish crest, chin raised and back straight in a close fitting black velvet jacket; his diminutive frame distinctive and magnetic. He bounds into view and teasingly for us, faces Jack for a few bars, grooving to the monstrous drumbeat. Then without warning he turns and, dashing to the front of the stage, busts out the riff, matching it with an iconic pose. Suddenly it’s as though the gig is open for business, and he is Johnny Marr: strolling along the front of stage, getting close to the fans, raising his guitar and winking cheekily, and always, always busy: ready for the next chord change, the next song and the next move: irrepressible and radiating with attitude and cool.

It was such an honor to host the great Johnny Marr returning to Japan. He promised the Japanese fans he would return, and he did not let us down! The first time Johnny Marr played a show in Japan, it was Summer Sonic, a festival. This year he also played a show at Fuji Rock Festival, at Mount Takenoko in Yuzawa. At the Liquidroom venue, Johnny Marr played a concert all of his own, with his wonderful and talented band, consisted of: Doviak (2nd guitar and keyboard), Iwan Gronow (bass guitar) and “Magic Jack” Mitchell (drums). He played songs of The Smiths, his earliest band, as well as his many beautiful new songs from “Playland”. He played my favorite song, “Dynamo”. I turned to my friend, excited, because I recognised it straight away. I was so happy! Johnny is so charming, and such pleasure to see. I hope he will return to Japan again soon.
