Project: The Manasseh House
An existing 120m2 two-storey house in Highgate was refurbished and re-planned to form the first phase of a 265m2, five bedroom house. The existing house is over-clad in insulated acrylic render system that continues at ground floor level to wrap part of the second phase new wing. The new wing is to be a timber construction, clad in western red cedar that forms a ‘frame’ that wraps the garden face of the house uniting existing and new and terminates in a new garage. The garden is divided into an ‘outdoor living room’ defined by the new deck and pool, wrapped by a wall and a soft landscaped area.
This project had to be conceived in two distinct phases that would be built several years apart – the first was to remodel an existing 1970’s house so that it could accommodate the client’s family, while the second would allow a later addition to provide a new, generous living space and master bedroom suite. JPA conceived a twin embrace of these two volumes, the existing building is wrapped in a new insulated render and appears as a ‘white box’ that is in turn enveloped by a cedar clad structure.
a garage structure to complete the embrace of old and new.
The existing building was stripped out internally save the staircase and a new layout created with a living space at ground floor, opening out onto the garden, that would function as a bedroom when the second phase was completed. The new wing is in a timber-framed construction and contains a small consultation room off the road for the owner’s health care business and a large living space at ground floor that in turn opens out into a deck in front of a new walled swimming pool. A master bedroom suite on first floor opens out onto a balcony with views across to Highgate cemetery. The new wing forms a frame to the rear facade that spans across the remodelled house to shade the large glazed opening and this terminates with
