A group of Victorian warehouses represent the last remnant of industrial 1:200 @ A4 building along the east bank of the Arun river in Littlehampton and lies within the western extremity of the Conservation Area and within a residential area – the last block in a continuous run of residential developments extending up the eastern bank of the river Arun from the harbour. The design for five new townhouses retains the shell of the Victorian buildings, integrating old and new. The new building adopts a simple form clad in cedar to contrast with the textured and varied forms of the existing brick + flint facades. A metal clad sawtooth roof has resonances with wharfside buildings and identifies each house.
this in innovative and practical ways, while also balancing this risk against the need to regenerate the site in a manner that respects and retains the local character of the conservation area. As developers of the new Thomas Heatherwick designed beachfront cafe, Jane Wood Brownfield Estates are investing in Littlehampton with new, highquality architecture that will help to rejuvenate the Town for the 21st century.
To the river, the houses present an open façade with balconies at each level to enjoy the river views. To the roadside, retained gable facades of the existing form a mask to the new timber-framed structure – parking is provided at ground level within the structure.
