NORTH END HOMES
Detroit’s North End neighborhood, much like most of the city, experienced significant decline during the later half of the 20th century. As it stands the now, the North End exhibits significant erasure. In fact, the sheer volume of empty space found within the neighborhood has begun to obfuscate its previous urban characteristics. The homes here now seem at once urban and rural. These two North End Homes begin to assimilate both urban and rural housing tropes into a new typology, better suited to the current conditions of the neighborhood. They borrow from both urban and rural traditions to create a housing type that is neither nostalgic, nor speculative, but well adapted for present conditions.

Urban Housing Tropes
Rural Housing Tropes
This initial study of the tropes found in urban and rural housing typologies provides an index of elements that can be recombined into a housing soultion that is at once urban & rural.

F I R E S TAT I O N N O. 4
Located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the fire station attempts to understand the manner in which a fire station responds to an emergency. The building analyses the spatial relationships between program, equipment, and the firefighters themselves. I seeks to optimize response time, while expressing this analysis via form and facade.
12
First, the program is expressed, not in feet and inches, but in human strides.

The facade of the building expresses the stride grid upon which the building is organized. The pushing outside of the building express the way in which peripheral program elements are moved in deference to elements which must stay close to the trucks.

My photography seeks to recognize similarities and differences in the built environment. Sometimes I seek them out, sometimes I stumble upon them. The following photo pairings illustrate this process.

Rather than the production of precious drawings, I see skethcing as a means of caputring the essence of locations or ideas. I following sketches attempt to translate places onto paper.
