Dear members The November month long ceramics programme; From African Earth; a celebration of ceramics is a World Design Capital official project #WDC577 and the Potters Market although part of the From African Earth programme has been officially recognized in it’s own right as a World Design Project # WDC 670. This means that the WDC marketing machine will promote our November events thereby attracting many more people to our exhibitions, Potters Market and Art in Clay Festival. Hence more opportunities for you to showcase your work at the 2014 Corobrik National Exhibition, CSA-Iziko exhibition and of course sell your work at the Potters Market. Corobrik National Exhibition You are invited to submit work for the Corobrik National Exhibition. In this newsletter you will find information about the Corobrik National Exhibition; dates, image requirements and submission methods and rules for entering work. Please note that there are only about 8 weeks left before your images must reach us . CSA- Iziko African Heritage Vessel Exhibition This exhibition is also open to all members of CSA and has two strands. The first strand is an exhibition of African vessels from the Iziko ceramics collection reflecting our African pottery heritage and the second strand is the contemporary exhibition of CSA members pots inspired by this genre, that is smoke fired pots. More information below. Please note that work cannot be sold at Iziko however pots may be reserved at the desk and arrangements made when the exhibition closes. From African Earth pamphlet We have designed a pamphlet which shows all CSA’s November events as well as events allied to CSA. I have attached a copy of the pamphlet which I hope you will send onto your data base. A printed version will be in the next issue of the NCQ. Open Studios Map I am pleased to announce that the map is almost ready for printing. Shannon has designed a beautiful map which I hope will bring many people into the participants studios. If the map is a success it will be reprinted next year and those who missed out on this one will have an opportunity to get onto the next. November is Ceramics Month It is our intention to continue with November is Ceramics Month in Cape Town beyond 2014 as in November we usually have a major exhibition, the Art in Clay Festival and the Potters Market. It makes sense to expand the number of events to include galleries and shops that specialize in ceramics and to continue with Open Studios. Cape Town will be then become known for it ceramics celebration every November and thus become a calendar event.
Magdalene Odundo Visit and Workshop Magadalene’s visit to Cape Town is an historic event. She is an International ceramic icon held in very high esteem throughout the world. Magdalene has presented workshops in prestigious academic institutions and has delivered papers at many international symposiums. Her beautiful hand crafted pots grace museums, public and private collections. We will have the privilege and honour of having Magdalene for a week in Cape Town. She is the award judge and guest speaker at the Corobrik National Exhibition, will open the CSA-Iziko exhibition and will be present at all other CSA events where you can meet and engage with her. Her workshop on Saturday 15 November is an event not to be missed. There will be a power point presentation about her life experiences, ceramics and her current installation of 1000 hand blown glass pieces in Sunderland. This is to be followed by a demonstration of her working methods. We have almost 60 bookings so please get your name onto the list or miss out on a once in a lifetime opportunity. To book please contact me on ralphjinclay@telkomsa.net. Potters Market The next Potters Market is on Saturday 22 November at Rondebosch Park. As the market is a WDC project we would like this market to reflect some of the excitement of Cape Town being the World’s Design Capital. As Black and Yellow are the WDC official colours we would like you to bring those colours into your display by having Black and / or Yellow table cloths, wear Black and / or Yellow T shirts, wear your WDC badges (I have a few), perhaps Black and / or Yellow pots. We will have live demonstrations, trade stalls and our usual food court. We will promote and advertise this market as extensively as possible and hope you will do the same. If you have ideas about how to make the market even bigger and better please contact myself or Iris Stuck. See table rules and fees below. We are excited about November 2014 and hope that you will support this wonderful opportunity to show Cape Town, South Africa and the Worlds visitors our unique, beautifully crafted ceramics.
