This newsletter has information about the many projects planned for WDC 2014 as well as our traditional events such as the AGM and the March Potters’ Market. Check our website: www.ceramics-sa-cape.co.za and Facebook for continuously updated information. AGM The AGM will take place in the Good Hope Gallery (above the Fired exhibition) at the Cape Town Castle on Saturday 8 March 2014 at 9am. A continental breakfast will be served from 8am courtesy of the CSA committee. The AGM provides members with an opportunity to interact with the committee and with each other to ensure effective management of the association, to protect it’s legacy and to plan for the future. Please try to attend and effect change. After the AGM we will have the following events; 1) 10h30 a presentation by a member of Cape Town’s World Design Capital team, 2) 11h00 Hennie Meyer and Janine de Waal will talk about their WDC project with a practical demonstration 3) 11h30 A walkabout led by Esther Esmyol of the installation of 101 place settings in the Lady Anne banqueting hall. POTTERS’ MARKET The market takes place at Rondebosch Park on Saturday 22 March. Please ensure that your membership is up to date and your table fees paid. before the market There will no longer be collections of any money by committee members at the market. If you do not have a permit to trade you will not be allowed to enter the park. Committee members will man the boom to ensure that only members who have a permit to trade will be allowed in. We earnestly ask for your co-operation in this regard. RUTHANNE TUDBALL WORKSHOP Ruthanne Tudball has been invited to visit South Africa by Nina Shand and Paul de Jongh. She will present a 3 day Soda Firing Workshop in McGregor. Ruthanne has kindly agreed to present a one day workshop in Cape Town before she goes to McGregor. This will take place at the Art in the Forest studio on Wednesday 23 April. Please check the advert for this workshop in this newsletter and on our website. November 2014 From African earth; a celebration of ceramics The following events take place in November 2014. I)
Corobrik National Exhibition opens on Sunday 16 November and runs until 6 December 2014 at the Great Cellar, Alphen Estate, Constantia .
2) CSA- Iziko collaborative exhibition ; From African Earth; a celebration of our African vessel heritage. Opens at the Good Hope Gallery, Cape Town Castle on Thursday 13 November and runs until January 2015 This exhibition will have two components’: (a) an heritage exhibition of African vessels from the Iziko collection and (b) an exhibition of vessels made in the same style by CSA members .
3) Rust-en-Vrede and the Clay Museum in Durbanville will be hosting an Anglo Oriental Retrospective Exhibition, an Invitational Contemporary Exhibition of work in the same genre and in the CUBE an Exhibition of Tea Bowls inspired by and in the style of Anglo Oriental ceramics.. This exhibition opens on Tuesday evening 11 November 2014 and closes on 11 December 2014 4) Magdalene Odundo Workshop on Saturday 15 November. 5) The Art in Clay Festival in Franschhoek opens 31 October to 30 November 2014 6) Juliet Armstrong Legacy Exhibition 16 November to 6 December 2014 Great Cellar foyer, Alphen 7) Open Studios Project November 1st to 31 December 2014 Further expansion of each event can be found on our website www.cearmics-sa-cape.co.za as well as in the NCQ. The CUBE There will be many interesting exhibitions in the CUBE this year, some by invitation and others open to all members of CSA. Please check the CUBE schedule on our website for more information

November 2014 will see an explosion of ceramics in the Mother City as CSA Western Cape celebrates Cape Town’s World Design Capital status with a month long programme of ceramics under the banner: From African Earth; a celebration of ceramics. This programme has been officially recognized as a WDC project as has our November Potters Market. Being endorsed by WDC has enormous benefits for marketing CSA to a world wide audience and greater exposure in all ways; virtual and actual. We would like to include all CSA members in this celebration by exhibiting work at some of the exhibitions being organized for November 2014. The following exhibitions are open to all CSA members I ) Corobrik National Exhibition which opens on Sunday 16 November at the Great Cellar, Alphen Estate, Constantia is open to all CSA members who have had work on Regional and National exhibitions. Selections for this exhibition will take place in October (selection dates for each region will be announced shortly). The National Exhibition is the highlight exhibition of our ceramic calendar and is generously sponsored by Corobrik. Magdalene Odundo is the award judge. 2) CSA members are also invited to take part in a CSA-Iziko collaborative exhibition ; From African Earth; a celebration of our African vessel heritage. This exhibition will have two components’: (a) an heritage exhibition of African vessels from the Iziko collection and (b) an exhibition of vessels made in the same style by CSA members. The work for the latter exhibition must fit in with the smoke fired genre of the historical African vessels. Pots can be thrown or hand built, any clay, burnished or not, slipped or not - no Raku, or glaze. Look at African vessels for inspiration. Only a limited number of these pots will be selected for this prestige exhibition at the Cape Town Castle which will be opened by Magdalene Odundo on Thursday evening 13 November and will be seen by thousands of visitors to the Castle during it’s 3 month run. These pots will be selected at the same time as those for the National Exhibition selection. 3) Rust-en-Vrede and the Clay Museum in Durbanville will be hosting an Anglo Oriental retrospective exhibition, an invitational contemporary exhibition of work in the same genre and in the CUBE an exhibition of tea bowls inspired by and in the style of Anglo Oriental ceramics. The CUBE exhibition is open to all CSA members. The only requirement is that the tea bowls be inspired by Anglo Oriental ceramics. Think of Hyme Rabinowitz, Esias Bosch, Tim Morris amongst others who were all influenced by this genre. This exhibition opens on Tuesday evening 11 November 2014. We will publish an article on Anglo Oriental ceramics and it’s influence on South African studio potters in later editions of the NCQ. Please contact Monica Ross at the Clay Museum if you would like to take part in this exhibition. Other events planned for November 2014 are; Magdalene Odundo Workshop on Saturday 15 November. The Art in Clay Festival in Franschhoek which opens on the last weekend in October and runs for the month of November. Most of the galleries in town and some wine farms will have ceramic exhibitions. We will carry up to date information on our website www.ceramics-sa-cape.co.za. Juliet Armstrong Legacy exhibition shows ceramics made by past students and those potters influenced by Juliet’s teaching, aesthetics and inspiration. This exhibition will be in the Great Cellar Foyer, Alphen Estate for the duration of the Corobrik National Exhibition.
Open Studios Project. More than 30 of our members have joined this new initiative to open their studios to the public during November 2014. We will be publishing a map detailing the location and opening times for visits to these studios. Please refer to our website for details in March. Potters Market. The November Potters Market has been recognized as a WDC event and with this endorsement we aim to make this market one of our highlight events. The November market attracts up to 100 traders and is a must see if you are in Cape Town on Saturday 22 November. Permanent collections to visit when in Cape Town The Clay Museum Durbanville has an extensive collection of historical and contemporary South African ceramics. Fired an exhibition of historical African vessels and contemporary South African studio ceramics at the Granary Gallery at Cape Town Castle. We have invited Cape Town galleries to join us in celebrating ceramics by having dedicated ceramic exhibitions in November 2014. Please refer to our website for information as more galleries join our celebrations.

Ruthanne Tudball Workshop Internationally renowned ceramicist Soda-glazed ceramics Come and learn her techniques... see Ruthanne demonstrate throwing, manipulating and assembling pieces while fresh on the wheel. She will also share a slide presentation of her techniques for creating slip-decorated stoneware vapour fired in a wood/gas kiln. Magdalene Odundo Workshop Cape Town 15 November 2014 Magdalene Odundo will be giving a full day workshop demonstrating how she produces her beautiful coil built pots, explaining her firing methods and the philosophy and background to her ceramic aesthetic. Magdalene Odundo was born in Kenya and trained in both Kenya and Uganda and spent 3 months at the Abuja Training Centre in Nigeria where she learnt to make pots in the traditional Gwani technique under the guidance of Ladi Kwali. Magdalene continued her ceramic education in the UK with an MA from the Royal College of Art. She is Professor of Ceramics at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design , University College in Farnham, Surrey. Magdalene has exhibited widely and achieved many accolades for her unique pots which show an obvious African inspiration with a Western sensibility.
