Dissertation: Mentoring the Mentor: Facilitating the development of higher order thinking processes through scaffolded mentoring at free-choice technology program for low-income youth This study explores and evaluates the learning at an afterschool technology program housed in a community technology center. In this program, middle and high school students work oneon-one with a volunteer adult mentor on a project using some form of multimedia technology (i.e., a website, video, PowerPoint). Data include individual interviews with students, where they “think aloud” through several problem-solving scenarios; observations of student and mentor working together; and mentor study group sessions facilitated by the researcher. The mentor study groups are constructed with a cultural historical activity theory framework to build a community working towards a common goal, which emerges through the group discussions. Through this intensive view into the technology-mediated student-mentor relationship, case study and cross-case analysis can: inform changes to the community technology center’s program, evaluate what (if any) changes occur to student’s problemsolving abilities, and what (if any) learning occurs for the mentor, and if and how the mentorstudent relationship meets expectations for the participants.
