Syria in winter The recent focus on the Syrian refugees and their perilous journey to flee from the war torn country, only highlights how desperate the situation must be for the millions who are left behind, barely surviving and with limited assistance. The UN’s Children Fund has estimated that there are around 7 million internally displaced children inside Syria who are in dire need of food, clothing, blankets and other winter essentials before Syria’s harsh and well-known winter storms set in once again. It is uncertain just how many children have died due to the sub-zero winter temperatures over the last four years; At Syria Relief’s medical centres, we have recorded a huge number of cases of serious respiratory infections caused by exposure to the unforgiving conditions. Circuit Churches involved Ros Walker, of Scholes Methodist Church, started a collection for Syrian refugees. Ros was not the only one feeling the same way and she linked up with other people determined to make things happen. “We contacted Holmfirth Methodist church, which had a more central location and a small amount of storage, and they agreed to open the doors as a drop-off point. At the same time Meltham, had opened the doors to their Carlisle Institute.” From humble beginnings, the collection grew and grew with over 1,000 boxes of aid from local donors in West Yorkshire being collected. Donations included a variety of warm clothes, sleeping bags, toiletries and more. Initially housed in Holmfirth Methodist Church, the collection had to be moved to a larger venue because of the overwhelming volume of support from the local community. Once sorted and boxed, the 1,000 plus boxes were sent on to Syria Relief in Manchester for distributing.

Women’s Fellowship reports by Rachel Boothroyd Rev Helen Roberts was the speaker at the Women’s Fellowship meeting held in the Arthurs’ Room on Oct 13th The first of the new season, it was very well attended as everyone was eager hear our speaker, who was accompanied by her dog Gabi.. Born in Newport, South Wales, Helen and her two elder sisters went to a Methodist Church where she was confirmed at an early age. Although life for her didn't always run smoothly she did well at school and later studied biochemistry and microbiology at Aberystwyth University. But her ambition was always to become a minister, so, after working for the Gas Board for six years she went to Theological College. Her first ministry was in the Hereford / Shropshire /Worcester area where she was in charge of six churches. Although her life is busy she still finds time to pursue two hobbies and showed us samples of her work in wood and glass. Finally she told us that she considers herself privileged to do for a living something that really fulfils her. The afternoon ended with tea and biscuits enjoyed by allincluding Gabi (left). Trinity Singers gave a concert at Women's Fellowships open meeting on 27th October. The conductor was Glenys Pallister, Philip Smith the accompanist and Merran Smith played the flute. Humorous poems were read by Jane Armitage, Pat Waite and Jean Wood. A vote of thanks was given by Margaret Armitage. 3

Minister’s Message

‘Because it’s Christmas’ – one of the supermarket advertising slogans this year. Because it’s Christmas – we are encouraged to spend what we don’t have and to give what is not wanted– that random thingamajig we brought when desperate; we all have that ‘impossible to buy for' one. Because it’s Christmas – cheesy, jolly songs will be playing in shops until you can’t bear them- but consider the staff there all day, every day! Because it’s Christmas – the cook is under pressure for the perfect meal with all the trimmings, even when they don’t like turkey, and as for sprouts..! Because it’s Christmas – families gather together, Because it’s Christmas – we tell the old story once more, of God with us. Because it’s Christmas – we gather as God’s family. Because it’s Christmas – we join our voices with the songs of the angels. Because it’s Christmas Blue Christmas No, Elvis Presley is not in the building- just borrowing his song title Christmas – a wonderful season of joy and goodwill to all, but is it? For many this is a difficult time of the year, high expectations and pressures, family togetherness a challenge. For some it is a reminder of losses, the empty chair; the pains of past years. And winter can be a time of seasonal depression. All of this sadness and struggle can feel accentuated in the midst of tinsel and singing reindeers. Blue Christmas – an oasis away from the hype and the stress, a reflective time of worship with space to consider those we will miss this Christmas, time to acknowledge difficult feelings. Join us at Trinity for a ‘Blue Christmas’ service at 4pm on 20th December, light a candle in the face of the longest night, and take space as we wait at the manger. Appropriately, a German Shepherd was found in it one morning fast asleep. Tired out after the journey to Bethlehem? This year’s Christmas appeal is for tackling Malaria in Nigeria.
