WHAT A DIFFERENCE A CENTURY MAKES
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS– in November
Then Magdale dam was built, or dug, over a hundred years ago. There were no trees around it then. In fact, as a civil engineer’s report stated (and printed in last issue of the Flyer) ‘Normally dam Now– same viewpoint banks should not have any trees on them because of the damage from roots’ – and it didn’t, then. In 2001 the Trust bought the dam with a Lottery Heritage Grant but after a hundred years or so the dam has now got problems, and the Trust, along with the Holme Valley Piscatorial Association, which has a management agreement with the Trust, is trying to solve them. The main problem is that it has sprung a leak (at the point indicated by the arrow) and unless the leak can be fixed the water level will have to remain low. This is not good for the fishing, nor for the look of the dam. The next problem is how to get at the leak to repair it. There are now trees in the way, and the access is over land which used to belong to the mill that originally owned the dam, but is now private. Together we hope to find solutions to the problems to avoid a more serious collapse of the dam wall.
Honley in Bloom We don’t know yet if Honley has gained an award in the ’It’s Your Neighbourhood’ class of the Royal Horticultural Society’s ‘Yorkshire in Bloom’ awards. Volunteers at work by the library Judging was in July Photo Sandie Nicholson but the award winners will not be announced until September. A lot of work went into making the village neat, tidy and…. flowery. Looks good!
This year the Christmas Light Switch on will be in Honley People’s Park on Saturday 21 st November. Organised by Honley Business Association, this FREE event will run from 3pm to 9pm. The afternoon and evening in the Park will have all the usual local musical entertainment along with Santa’s Grotto, face painting, and plenty of food and drinks for all. The grand ‘Lights Parade’ will set out with the band from St. Mary’s, Church Street, at 5.45pm and end with a firework display at 6pm in the park. Money raised by donations in the buckets will go towards getting better security camera coverage in the village. The Business Association people could do with some volunteers to help to organise things before, during or after events. We have some great loyal helpers but always need an extra pair or two of hands. Please let us know if you could help by calling in on June McLean at Zebra on Westgate.
Honley Village Calendar The Trust is producing a calendar (in colour– see it on the website) ready for your diary entries next year. With photographs by Sandie Nicholson it makes an ideal gift. Each month is sponsored by a Honley business and is ruled with plenty of space to write in your dinner dates, etc. It will be on sale in various Honley outlets and at The Art & Craft Fair in the Village Hall on December 5th
Peoples Park play area vandalised Over recent months the special soft surface in the ‘child safe’ play area in Honley Park has been badly vandalised several times, putting young children at risk of injury. Thanks to Cllr Charles Greaves there has always been a prompt response from the Council and the damage has been repaired but this should not be tolerated in Honley. If you see anyone damaging the children’s play area phone the local police on 111. Let’s keep Honley a decent place to live in.
THANK YOU
FOR SUPPORTING A VERY LOCAL CHARITY. Thank you to everyone who has joined the Trust or paid their annual subs or given a donation this year. The Trust has over 1,200 members who subscribe annually and nearly 150 who are life members. Many thanks to June McLean at Zebra, Tony Washington and staff at Taylor’s Foodstore and the staff at the Honley branch of the Yorkshire Building Society for collecting the envelopes. If you misplaced your envelope it’s not too late to join for this year, just ask at one of the above for another! Honley Village Community Trust – Working for Honley
HONLEY VILLAGE HALL report by Marcia Murray
The main news from the Village Hall this month is that the fitting of new UPVC double glazed windows and new high security aluminium doors is Petanque players coffee break now complete. One of the main differences which you will notice inside the hall is the opening up of the windows (arrowed) in the small meeting room. They were previously blanked off for security reasons. What a difference– we now have a light and airy room which can be used for its original purpose and not just as a store room. We are grateful to Holme Valley Parish Council and also to Kirklees for grants towards the cost. The remainder of the funding came from rents received from hiring the Hall out. Sadly we have said goodbye to our weekend cleaner Waridi (Warda) who is leaving to go to university to study medicine. Warda has been a conscientious and reliable worker since she started work almost 3 years ago aged just 16. We wish her the very best of luck for the future. Finally, you may have noticed that the village hall storage facility round the back has been upgraded-with many thanks to a very generous local donor.
HVCT VOLUNTEERS Report by Neil Littlewood The summer months for the volunteers sees the battle against the dreaded Himalayan balsam continuing. This year we have noticed a lot less where we have been clobbering it, down the goit to Magdale dam, on the Canary Island, and the river side at the bottom of Magdale fields by the little white bridge. If you see any– pull it up! All the fruit trees on the dam banking that we planted this spring have all taken bar one which is an excellent take up. The Trust’s team of volunteers turns out monthly to keep Trust land in good order and a pleasant place to visit. If you’d like to join the volunteers for a bit of physical exercise give Neil Littlewood a call 0776 674 2140, or just turn up at the old cemetery chapel at 10am on the 2nd Sunday of the month. The Honley Over 55s Activity Group starts the autumn season on Wednesday October 7th The group meets in the Community Centre, Stoney Lane, from 1.30-4pm. Chris Horner started young. While still at school an aunt who was a radiographer one day asked him if he’d ever thought about physiotherapy. “I had a look, decided it was something I was interested in and could do. So after taking A levels at school I trained in Leeds at the LGI. That was in Chris Horner 1979; it was a three year course Holme Valley Clinic and qualified me as a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. Of course, after you graduate you then start learning! “I must have learned well because I’ve been here now for 25 years and built up a good reputation.” Chris worked eight years professionally for three different
rugby league clubs, treating sports injuries, neck and back issues. The bulk of the work in Honley is also spinal, but the clinic treats soft tissue injuries; ligaments, joints, muscle injuries, that sort of thing, as well. And it’s not just from sports- you can get the same sort of injuries just by falling out of bed! Of course, some injuries will get better on their own, but usually if they’re not improving within three or four days they should get attention. The earlier the better. “One case I’ll always remember was a certain gentleman who, after treating him, was resting on his side. After a short conversation with him which made no sense I realised that he had fallen asleep- but was still looking at me- with his glass eye!” Chris is married, with two children; Megan, 17, and Benjamin, 15. The clinic specialises in Physiotherapy services, but is also home to clinicians providing Sports Podiatry, Remedial Massage, Acupuncture, Hypnotherapy and Reflexology. “We are all here to help,” he says. Contact details are on the back page.
Letter to the Editor Sir, As a responsible dog walker I always clean up after my dog and dispose of the pooh bag in a bin. I am amazed though at the number of full pooh bags I see adorning the countryside round Honley- hanging from tree branches, stuffed in crevices in the wall or just dropped by the track. It seems a very sly way of carrying on. The owners must only pick up their dog’s pooh if someone is watching and then quietly dump the bag when out of sight. Those pooh bags will literally hang around for years. Yours, Honley resident. (dog's name and address supplied)
