HONLEY FEAST REVIVAL

Saturday 17th September On the Cricket Field

Photo by Sandie Nicholson The Honley Litterati appear once a month to keep Honley beautiful. This informal Friends of Honley group meets outside the library on the first Sunday of the month at 10am, armed with an assortment of tools and weapons and sets out to attack weeds, paint railings, and generally have a good couple of hours in the fresh air improving the look of the village. I’m told they work up quite a thirst too. They are managed , if that’s the word, by Sylvia, Lyn and Russell with June Mclean from Zebra providing the social media link-ups and marketing. Thanks to them all! Pictured– the first group outing last June. Friends of Honley are planning their fourth village tidy for Sunday 4th September again at 10am. This time besides the usual litter pick they intend to paint the railings at the library and tidy and weed the lane by the side of the Cricket Field that leads to Jagger Lane Rec- to remove all those nettles. Have you got an hour or two to help? Everybody, young, old, families or singles is welcome to come along to help.

HONLEY VILLAGE HALL report by Marcia Murray

It is with great sadness that we said goodbye to Shirley Hinchliffe who died on the 28th June. Shirley worked as caretaker and cleaner at the Village Hall for almost nine years. During that time she was unfailingly good-humoured with a wonderful down to earth and ‘get on with it’ attitude. She will be greatly missed. CCTV cameras are being installed throughout the village. We have also had them installed at the Village Hall. It is a sad fact that there is a small minority of people who exhibit antisocial behaviour. We hope that the presence of cameras capable of identifying troublemakers will act as a deterrent so that people using the hall can go about their legitimate everyday or evening activities without disruption or interference. On a lighter note you must have noticed that courtesy of the Honley Business Association, of which the Village Trust is an associate member, the village is festooned with Yorkshire flags to celebrate Yorkshire Day on the 1st August. The Village Hall is also proudly flying the Yorkshire flag – well three flags actually. Many thanks to Philip Lofthouse of the HBA for putting them up there. We hope you agree that the village and the Village Hall is looking great what with the flags, the flowers baskets

HVCT VOLUNTEERS by Neil Littlewood NEW BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATERS It’s been in production by the volunteers for a couple of years, on and off, but now it’s finally in place over the outlet at the head of Magdale Dam. The bridge was tried out by Holme Valley Civic Society during a Mag River walk in July (picture left) and it stood the test!. The bridge is made from an old lorry chassis with oak slats firmly fixed to it and should last 100 years. In September we should get the fruit of our labours on Magdale Dam bank– and we are giving it away. If you'd like some plums or damsons, or whatever is ripe, from the trees we planted in February last year, come down to Magdale (Road) with a basket, on September 25th about 2pm and the Trust’s hard working volunteers will give you some. Anybody who wishes to help in maintaining this beautiful part of Honley is most welcome. Just turn up! We meet every second Sunday in the month at the chapel in Honley graveyard at 10am. For more info contact Neil Littlewood on 07766 742 140.

Local builder Chris Langford will be starting work on the ‘Pearson Bridge’ over the small goit between Magdale Fields and ‘The Island’ (It is an island– water all round it!) on September 22nd. The bridge will be stone faced and wide enough to get a tractor and mower over. Along with improved access and a small parapet it will considerably enhance the look and usefulness of this area. The bridge is to be named after Jim Pearson, a founder member of the Trust, whose Honley Car Parts shop on Westgate was the unofficial meeting place of the Trust for many years. We’re Nearly There! by Chris Humphries After four and a half years the HONLEY CRICKET Facilities DeGROUND DEVELOPMENT velopment Group at the Honley Cricket Ground has ALMOST reached its funding target to both totally refurbish the pavilion and build a brand new changing facility to the left of the clubhouse. This iconic building was built in 1893 but is now badly in need of some serious maintenance.. Apart from Honley Cricket Club, it is used by Honley Junior and Senior Football Clubs, Holmfirth Harriers and many other local organisations. A local contractor is starting work in September. We have had generous support locally including from our local Councils. Also, we are in the final stages of securing monies from the English Cricket Board, Sport England and the Football Foundation. Honley Cricket Club itself is still actively fund raising but we still need about £25,000 to cover our projected costs. Maybe you could hire the bar/tearoom for your party or perhaps become a member and sit in the sun (not guaranteed) to support your local team? Or ‘Buy a Brick’ to record your contribution to refurbishing this great building. For more details find us on Twitter or Facebook or via JustGiving.com
