Walking from Trinity to Westgate for the Good Friday service 2015 (Missed the 308) Art and Crafty Rev Helen Roberts, our minister (right) with one of her glass craft pieces, a lattice made from melted glass bottles. She has a kiln in the manse and used it last October to fire items made in the Messy Church. More Art & Craft was exhibited in the church by the Women’s Fellowship on February 9th, so much so that we’ve made bits of them into a colourful frieze on page 3. So starts the poem that urges us to look beyond the crotchety old woman/man to the full person and the life they have lived. But the phrase fits in a lot of other settings too. When we gather together, or pass someone in the street we don’t know more that we can see, or they offer to tell us. I am writing this in the midst of a week of programmes on BBC that consider the lives of those living with various mental health concerns, and (unconnected) a week in which my own lurking depression has come up for air. Just one of many struggles that don’t come with a cast or crutches but – like chronic pain, exhaustion, and so many things that are invisible – make daily life a greater challenge. A couple of weeks ago a head teacher made the news for asking parents not to wear pyjamas on the school run. Now I assume this was enough of a trend to warrant such a pronouncement, and the media threads were on the ‘decline of standards’, ‘bad role models’ and so forth. But who knows the reason behind some of those pyjama drives? Even without something like depression pinning you to the bed, school mornings with two or three lively (or not lively enough) children can be a mass of compromises to get all out on time – so what if Mum’s outfit is the compromise? Some of those who are being judged for not being good enough may have faced their own version of a marathon to achieve what others see as not enough. There are a lot of pressures in people’s lives, not just health or parenting, and we cannot know anyone’s full story. We are icebergs, only a fraction on view. And if you ask we will say we are fine – because your question may only be a passing hello, or because we can’t cope with explaining (again?). When you look at me what do you see? – Not enough so let’s not judge, just walk together for a while. And maybe like Emmaus we find God walks with us.

Beyond belief Towards the end of the service, the Sunday School teacher brought in the little ones to present to the adults what they had been learning. The children stood in a row before the congregation and the teacher started the ball rolling by saying..... "I believe in..." The first child then responded with; "The Father." The second child then added: "The Son." There then followed a long silence, and eventually one of the other children spoke up: "Please Miss, the girl who believes in the Holy Spirit isn’t here today."
Have you been to one of our Taize services? If not you don't know what you are missing! The services are held once a quarter and are led by the Reverend Richard Thompson. The service begins with some quiet Taize music and we sit in silence with our thoughts and reflections for ten minutes or so. Richard provides us with an Icon and a Meditation for us to focus on. There are readings from the bible on the chosen theme, interspersed with Taize chants. We have a quiet time for personal prayer and lighting of candles. It is a very peaceful and relaxing service. The next service is on 17th April at 6 o’clock. Why not come and join us? If you would like transport to Church contact Marion Bainbridge on 01484 769075.
