Week 15—21 May Well, it’s an idea!

By Rev Helen Roberts All too quickly the next newsletter deadline comes along and ideas are needed. Ideas are strange things – they may land on you unexpectedly, or they may be dragged out of us kicking and screaming. But ideas, especially the fresh variety, offer different possibilities for the path ahead. As a church Trinity’s mission statement is in this box on the right. There are possibilities – connecting with the revival of the Honley Feast, building on the success of the Christmas Tree Festival, being part of our community and inviting people to encounter God. There are possibilities to deepen our own encounter with God; to consider our questions and doubts; to grow together as the Away Day offers. New people tend to come with new ideas (well, ideas gleaned from other places) and I have ideas to share with you as a church, and you will have ideas, perhaps dusty on a shelf, or shiny and fresh. I want to gather together so we can consider ideas for the next stage of our faith journey together, and discern which ideas to explore more. So we are holding an Ideas Afternoon on Wednesday 4th May at 2pm in Arthurs’ Room. This is open to anyone with an interest; it doesn’t mean committing to anything, but a place to share our ideas. If I am sat there alone, who knows what bizarre plans I might come up with! So come along – if only to rein in my mind! А------------------------Ω You are invited to the manse (7 Mullion Avenue) on these Thursday evenings at 7pm to share in conversations about the Bible and what it means to us. 12 May New Testament – Gospels & Acts, stories of Jesus and friends 26 May New Testament – Letters, and that strange book at the back!

Next Trinity Lunch Club The next TLC meets and eats at 12.15 on Sunday 8th May. Partakers are also welcome to come to our morning service at 1030, which is followed by tea or coffee with all the congregation..

*Sunday 22nd- Junior Church. Children leave the main service after about ten minutes and meet in another room. All children and their parents or carers are welcome to join in. They all return to the main service just before it ends.

JOE SPOONER 11/03/43-27/03/16 Joe was married to Margaret in Trinity in 1970. He was always ready to help out and used to drive the church minibus and, when we used to collect waste paper to pay for it, the lorry that took the paper to the recycling plant.. Joe had requested that his ashes be driven at 100 mph to Bullcliff woods. The police would find it hard to prosecute him. Of interest to bikers, the speed record for a motorcycle hearse is held by the Rev. Paul Sinclair who rode a Suzuki Hayabusa and sidecar hearse (like this one) at 126.6 mph in 2013– a Guinness World Record. The Rev Paul now runs the stable of motorcycle hearses which supplied Joe’s. The Three of us in the Waiting Room “Jennifer Dennis?”- my name is called. I turn to him who waits. A brief kiss, and then I walk away. At the door I glance back. His newspaper and crossword at his side, he sits, taking comfort that our God waits with him, as our God moves silently with me to the next scan. JDD

Phakamisa jumpers astound kids

Journeys

Pioneer Ministry by Tim Moore-hear him on May 10th This to share my thinking – good and bad, to invite constructive comment and to see where it takes us. Mental health is fragile and we are all prone to struggles. • An increasing number of young people – men and women are taking their own lives • Older men and women struggle to find meaning in life • The Methodist Church has invited me to try something new away from ‘church’ • Mindfulness is becoming a very powerful self-help tool for everyone, not just those with a diagnosed illness Calmness, peace, spirituality, de-stressing, the search for self and serenity are elements for which many people are looking.

As reported last month, Pam and David Redfearn visited a Phakamisa (Durban) mission school in February and presented woolly jumpers to the kids. (It gets cold in winter) Pam says “They can’t quite take it in- that some white people have come to the school to give them jumpers!” Some of the jumpers were knitted by Trinity folk and some by the ‘Knit and Natter’ group which meets on Monday afternoons in the library. Pictured (l-r) two of the teachers, Pam Redfearn, and Thokozani Pozwa, Phakamisa Director, who leads the project.

Pumpkin growers carve out a living in Bangladesh with help from the charity Practical Action. Everyday life in Bangladesh is not easy. It is one of the poorest and most overcrowded countries in the world. The situation is not helped by the country's geography. Most people live next to one of 230 unstable rivers which regularly flood and change their course. However Practical Action is teaching people a technique called "sandbar cropping" to grow pumpkins. Basically you dig a little pit in a sandbar, put in some compost and plant a pumpkin seed. Practical Action supplies training and seeds to get people started, and demonstrates how to make compost. Pumpkins are a perfect crop because they are extremely nutritious, last for up to a year and fetch good money at market.
