Although, with age, the weakness and the strain of the vocal cords is more probable, anyone can develop voice related difficulties anytime. In fact, you are at the greatest risk of developing such issues if your job puts a high demand on your vocal cords. Below are some problems which affect voice and create difficulty in speaking:

 Benign vocal cord lesions- Voice misuse or over use causes benign, noncancerous growth on vocal cords resulting in its trauma. Altering the vocal cords vibration and leading to hoarseness, these lesions on vocal cords are generally consistent with nodules, polyps, and cysts. The nodules (or nodes) grow on both vocal cords opposite to each other and it is imperative to eliminate the vocal trauma which is prone to cause it. All these benign growths cause discomfort and pain while speaking, as well as hoarseness and voice breaks.  Vocal cord paralysis- This Vocal Problem identifies by inability of one, or both vocal cords to move. Generally one cord weakens or becomes paralyzed due to viral infection of throat, damages due to surgeries or some other unknown reasons. Is several cases, the problem arises due to incorrect voice application. It impacts ability to speak and even breathe properly.  Spasmodic Dysphonia- This affects voice muscles in the larynx and voice box. These muscles experience sudden involuntary movements (or spasms) which interfere with vibration and voice production ability of the folds. Spasmodic Dysphonia causes occasional voice breaks and makes the voice tight and strained. In more serious cases, the person's speech becomes very difficult for others to understand.  Acid Reflux: This problem arises when the acid from stomach leaks up to

esophagus which causes burning in vocal cords or vocal box. In several cases, it is caused due to strenuous misuse of voice which brings the acid up into vocal box and esophagus. Speaking or singing is something which requires coordination between breathing and several muscle groups. There are efficient and inefficient ways of using your voice. Just like improper weight lifting can lead to back injuries, inefficient voice application can cause voice problems. Voice misuse or overuse causes several other vocal problems like muscle tension Dysphonia, vocal fold cysts and more. The sufferers seek certain treatments to fix their voices which merely work on the symptoms and not on the root cause of problem.
