Your hard work has taken you this far — and it’s brought you to Johnson & Wales University. We want you to imagine everything your future can be. And then we want you to work towards it — because when you work, so does your education. Whether your motivation is professional development, a career change or personal growth, your options here are as broad as your ambitions. Our progressive approach to learning dates back to our very beginning, when we were among the first colleges founded by two women: Gertrude I. Johnson and Mary T.
Wales. Since 1914, our goal has been for students to make the most of their time at college, to bring out their potential and turn it into a career. Through education that takes you beyond the classroom, to industry connections that put students to work, we work just as hard as you do to turn your passion into a craft, and then bring that craft to the world. It doesn’t matter where you’re from or where you’ve been, if you are willing to put in the effort for what you want, there’s only one direction you’re going: forward.

You’ll have opportunities to collaborate with fellow students, work with world-renowned companies, or even assist professors with their work. There’s an entire community behind you to help develop your skills and make the most of your potential. We’ll show you how to get inside your field of interest and develop the knowledge and skills necessary for success.

IN A CLASS OF THEIR OWN
FINDING YOUR PATH
No matter how you’re learning — in or out of class — the quality of your education has a lot to do with your professor. At JWU, we have some of the most passionate, dedicated leaders in academia, with years of professional experience to back up their lessons. They are committed to working with you one-on-one to help you develop your skills. With their experience, they not only teach the way the industry actually works but develop innovative programs that directly reflect 21st-century needs.
If you’ve already completed a bachelor’s degree and have been thinking about making your way in a medical profession, you can enroll in the Postbaccalaureate Pre-Medical & Pre-Health Professions Certificate. This program offers you an easy and affordable way to fulfill pre-med or pre-health prerequisite coursework. Whether your goal is to enroll in a health professional program, or you need to retake courses to improve performance, this certificate program provides 22-24 credits in health-related courses. If you don’t need the entire certificate, you can take only the courses you need. And if you choose to complete the entire certificate, your total credits can include up to four transfer credits from coursework completed at another institution.
MAKING A SCENE James Desmarais, associate professor in criminal justice, knows how to create a crime scene. In fact, he does it all the time for his criminalistics courses, exposing students to scenes that look like they are pulled from the first five minutes of a “CSI” episode. But for his students, CSI is more than a television show, it’s a calling, one they get to explore by working mock crime scenes and studying evidence in JWU’s state-of-the-art crime lab. A retired Providence police detective, Desmarais advocated for this lab in order to give students hands-on experience of investigating crime scenes. As a criminal justice major, you’ll not only get to examine these mock scenarios, but collect, identify and process evidence. You’ll be prepared to hit the ground running — or perhaps analyzing — from day one.

And when you’re ready to complete an internship, we can work with you to find an arrangement that fits into your

C O L B Y B A K E R ’ 2 1 B U S I N E S S S T U D I E S is a Teller Operations Supervisor at Pawtucket Credit Union where he is using the experience he is gaining on the job toward his internship requirements. Here’s what he has to say: “Ever since I went back to school, I feel as though opportunities in my career have already begun materializing, and I have yet to graduate. Aside from gaining a deeper understanding on the entire spectrum that represents a business through my classes, my employer has recognized my desire to further myself, for both of our mutual interests. I have recently been accepted into a program for mortgage origination training, a position I have been striving to reach for some years now. It excites me to think of all the possibilities that can become available through a higher education. For the first time in my life, I can see myself going to graduate school and earning an MBA, by virtue of the educational confidence Johnson & Wales has instilled in me in such a short time.”

DIANE SARACENI CLASS OF ’19
NEVER STOP LEARNING
While Diane Saraceni ’19 was a student at JWU, she was working full-time as an audit operations coordinator in Boston at Northeastern University. As the first in her family to go to college, she was brought up to believe having a job was more important. “I never thought going to college was a realistic scenario for me, but now I’ve finally done it,” she says. She’s proud of her accomplishments, even more so because her daughter followed in her footsteps and graduated from college at the same time. “When people ask me to summarize my time at Johnson & Wales, some words that come to mind are grit, passion, talent and teamwork. I believe that when you’re doing something that you really enjoy, it’s not really work. When I think about what I’ve learned here, I think I never would have learned to do any of these things on my own.” Diane Saraceni ’19 8

HARD WORK
WE KNOW THAT NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU WORK, COLLEGE STILL COSTS MONEY. It’s an investment, and like any good investment, it should pay off in dividends. That’s why we’re so career focused; you should graduate trained to take on your craft, and when you succeed, so do we. Of course, first you have to start, which can seem daunting. That’s why we provide each student with a financial planner to guide them through the process of financing higher education. You’ll get personal loan counseling and strategies to make attending JWU financially possible. If you’re ready to work with us, we’ll work for you. You’ll meet with an admissions representative who will walk you through the application process, including discussions about transfer credit, your class schedule and financial aid options available to you. As a continuing education student, you can apply for student loan programs or the Pell Grant (this grant doesn’t need to be repaid). To apply for grants and loans, or any other type of financial aid, you’ll need to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can complete this process online at fafsa.gov. JWU’s FAFSA code is 003404. Have you served in the military? At JWU, we value the experience you gained through the military service, and we thank you for your sacrifice. Now, we’re ready to help you prepare for your next move.
