2223 Wildcat Is

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A

WILDCAT?

Johnson & Wales students create their own definition of what it means to be a Wildcat every day. These are just some of the adjectives they use to describe themselves.

A WILDCAT IS…

“It’s easy to find people I can connect with because the JWU student body is so diverse. Just through being on campus and getting involved, I have met some of my best friends and each one brings something different to my life.”

CONNECTED

“There is something about cooking in nature that has always intrigued me. This led me to have a deep appreciation for our natural environment, and after learning about climate change and the destruction of natural environments around the world as a kid, I always knew I needed to play my part.”

CURIOUS DETERMINED

Curry

“I’ve had many different experiences in my life — from being born in another country, being adopted at the age of three, and moving to a new place at the age of ten. All of this has allowed me to make different connections with people. These connections and experiences have taught me different life lessons, but the one thing that has always been my constant is I always manage to progress and learn something new and keep

cooking through it all. The experiences and things I have witnessed around me have shaped me into the person I am today. All of it has made me want to achieve big goals and strive for better things.”

DETERMINED

CURIOUS

ENGAGED

“I joined JWU’s Student Government Association (SGA) and served as a senator for the duration of my freshman year. This opportunity allowed me to not only make friends with similar interests but also helped me to learn more about my university and the political dynamic on campus. I also helped to start the Providence Food Insecurity Collective (PFIC) JWU Chapter here on campus.

PFIC is a student-run organization working to eradicate food insecurity within our community and nationwide. We strive to provide resources to those in need while trying to remain as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible.”

EXPERIENCED

“The Jordan trip was unlike any other I have ever been on. Not only was it a tour in another country, but one we as students were able to lead. We saw our peers in tour guide roles and really helped one another be our best selves. There is no other experience that can compare to this trip. Everything that we have learned

in the classroom was put into practical use. I am so lucky and grateful that Johnson & Wales gave me this opportunity. I know I will never forget it.”

"Many other schools tend to lean more towards the artsy side of design and a little less on the technical side, which is what I was looking for. I love to design with purpose and intention. If anyone were looking to major in graphic design, I would highly recommend JWU.”

FOCUSED

GOGETTING

“I enjoy studying many different subjects. Because of this, I didn’t know what major I wanted to join when I applied for JWU. I just knew that there were aspects of many majors that I loved and felt I had to do. The problem was that if I chose one major, I wouldn’t be able to take all the courses that I was interested in. That’s when I found the Design Your Own Major program.

This is a major that was made to help ambitious students like me, who find themselves interested in studying from multiple areas. Being able to take aspects from existing majors and create my own curriculum makes me feel more in control of my education.”

FOCUSED

GROUNDED

"The biggest takeaway from my (internship) experience at WPRI News would have to be being open to making mistakes and moving on. There were a lot of times where I would second guess myself and not do something as I was worried I would mess something up. Watching the professionals at my internship also make mistakes and be able to bounce back so fast really allowed me to trust myself more and, in a way, be able to embrace the ability to work under pressure."

"Believe it or not, my 5th grade school trip to the White House in 2014 sparked my interest in government service and the fire that was lit beneath me never burned out. Although I had an idea of the route I wanted my career to go in, I never in a million years would’ve thought that I’d be interning at the White House almost ten years later. It was a full circle moment to return at the start of my career, so I’m sure my 5th grade self is very proud."

INSPIRED

INSPIRED

PROBLEMSOLVING

"In my career, I hope to work in criminal law and help shape the law and its application to be more uniform and fair to all people. It takes individual people with the right mindset and drive to make any substantial change in their community, the state, the country, and the criminal justice system as a whole. I would encourage those who may feel defeated or apprehensive about becoming involved in a field that needs restoration to not allow public

opinion to discourage you but motivate you. It is very easy to criticize something, especially when there is reason to, but it takes much more to be a part of enacting change and be committed to problem-solving rather than criticizing.”

SKILLED

"I didn’t expect to win (Colorado Cyber Games), actually; I just wanted to try out the skills I learned at JWU. To my surprise, the competition’s challenges felt easy, because they were things we had already done in labs at Johnson & Wales...Employers really like that I took initiative outside of class, and I’ve had some great interviews, including with SpaceX.

Assistant Professor Chavis really brought in hands-on learning and was always there for his students if we had any questions. Everything he taught helped prepare me for the Cyber Games and beyond.”

SUPPORTED

“When I visited Johnson & Wales for an open house, I wasn’t really thinking too much about the school – that is until I met the professors. I will never forget the day I sat in front of Professor Cannata and Professor Diaz and thought to myself, ‘This is where I want to go.’ To me, attending a business school is one thing, but attending a business school where the professors care about your future is another – and that’s what Johnson & Wales has.”
