Congratulations on your acceptance to JWU!
I’m Rebecca Simon, the associate dean of the College of Health & Wellness, and I’m so excited to welcome you to our community.
I’m an occupational therapist by training and completed my undergraduate degree in Healthcare Administration. I am proud of the health professions that have brought me into this role and inspired me to continue bringing students like you into the field!
At JWU, our students enjoy experiences with industry professionals that go beyond the “walls” of healthcare facilities. You’ll get to engage with healthcare as it relates to the community that surrounds us, including food, nutrition — even culinary kitchens! JWU Health & Wellness Wildcats actively participate in local, regional and national events, and are regularly published in peer-reviewed journals. These experiences will help set you apart from the competition when you apply to graduate school or apply to jobs after graduation.
Our small, custom programs offer you the ability to truly get to know your faculty, meet friends who are interested in the same things as you and join clubs with meaning.
Please contact me personally at rebecca.simon@jwu.edu with any questions, or even to introduce yourself and tell me why you’re excited to join our community.
Welcome to JWU!

A COLLEGE THAT UNLOCKS YOUR POTENTIAL
You’ll make a difference in the College of Health & Wellness. While learning how to deliver the best patient or client care, students are also studying how to heal injuries, train athletes and use food as both fuel and medicine. Wildcats are leading the charge to improve community health and prevent disease.
Every program in the college offers the training needed to build skills for a wide variety of career options in fields such as athletic training, healthcare administration or community health work.
You may also decide to continue your studies in a graduate or doctoral program to become an occupational therapist, physician assistant, nurse, doctor, or nutritionist — there are so many possibilities in the healthcare field, and JWU will help you prepare for whichever one you choose.

TOGETHER, WE CAN CHANGE LIVES
Directed by Associate Professor Samantha Rosenthal, Ph.D., the Center for Student Research and Interdisciplinary Collaboration offers opportunities for undergraduate students to have their research and writing published in academic journals and publications.
In the Exercise Science Lab, students can do firsthand clinical practice and conduct cutting-edge research on health, fitness and nutrition — often working with JWU student athletes to help their performance improve, both on- and off-season.
Dietetics & Applied Nutrition students tap into JWU’s culinary power.
Most dietetics programs don’t have culinary as part of it, but here, we’re able to be in a kitchen. It brings us to a new level of understanding food and understanding what our patients are going through - that’s the reason I picked JWU. I really got to learn how to cook and how to apply those skills.”

PROFESSORS WHO OPEN NEW DOORS
A great mentor is easy to find at JWU — in addition to your assigned faculty mentor, you’ll soon discover that every professor is eager to help you find your passion, connect you with opportunities and offer guidance when you need it. With our small class sizes, it will be easy for you to build a strong connection with your professors in and out of the classroom.
SPACES THAT CHALLENGE THE DEFINITION OF CLASSROOM
JWU’s lab spaces and facilities are not your traditional classrooms. They are designed to fuel your curiosity and professional development by simulating real-world environments and offering cutting-edge technology and equipment. Though every space on our campus is available to students in every college, you’ll often find your health and wellness peers (or yourself!) in these areas.
Your belief that parts of something are interconnected and can only be explained when you reference the whole; your treatment of the whole person rather than just the symptoms of an illness.
You’ll hear this word a lot
Ex.: “Programs such as Public Health explore a holistic approach to health, where students discover how important nutrition, exercise science, psychology, sociology, public health and economics can be to a humanistic delivery of healthcare.”
I think it’s great to have access to the exercise science labs, both as a student and as an athlete, because we get a chance to use some of the industry’s leading equipment and get trained on what we’ll be using in the field.”

Welcome to JWU — what an amazing opportunity ahead of you!
My name is Margaret Johnson, and I am a senior in the public health program with a minor in nutrition and psychology. I chose Johnson & Wales University because of its extensive opportunities for internships on and off campus. JWU has provided me with the ability to further my knowledge in the public health field while continuing my athletic career in Division III sports, playing field hockey and lacrosse. You’ll take pride in being a Wildcat, and you’ll have all the support you need to succeed academically and prepare you to pursue your career.
I am also a member of the Health Equity Club. At JWU, you’ll have so many clubs and organizations to choose from to get involved on campus. With Providence being a small city, there are also extensive activities surrounding our campus to explore. I personally have loved the food culture in the city and trying new restaurants regularly. WaterFire is also a Providencespecific event that I have explored many times and enjoyed. I’m from Delaware, but after moving here and getting to explore the city, I have grown to love it more and more every day!
Within the classroom, I have had the pleasure of taking classes such as Cooking for Health & Wellness, Comparative Healthcare Systems and my research capstone. I particularly enjoyed these classes because they helped further my education in areas that I’m passionate about. The Cooking for Health & Wellness class was an extraordinary class, unique to Johnson & Wales, because it is a culinary-style class that is geared towards Health & Wellness students. It allowed me to learn how to cook healthy, delicious meals while also learning about public health and nutrition.
I’ve achieved many accomplishments in the College of Health & Wellness. I’m proud to be a part of this community and feel as though I am beyond prepared to pursue a career in public health and nutrition. I am forever grateful for the education and opportunities Johnson & Wales has provided to me, and hope you are able to have irreplaceable experiences here as well.
Sincerely,
Margaret Johnson ’23
As a Health Equity Fellow under the Center for Student Research & Interdisciplinary Collaboration, I’ve worked with Dr. Samantha Rosenthal, a professor in this college, on academic writing and research. Because of that experience, I became a published author on the topic of smartphone addiction, furthering my skill sets within the field of public health.”
