Food & Beverage Industry Management

This program is the dream combination of food, business and hospitality. You’ll further your culinary or baking skills while developing industry-specific business, managerial, front-ofthe-house and leadership skills to expand your career prospects far beyond the kitchen.

Chef it up in your first two years to earn an associate degree in either Culinary Arts or Baking & Pastry Arts. Then, you’ll spend your last two years taking hospitality courses to learn more about operations management, leadership, beverage appreciation, strategic marketing and more.

SAMPLE COURSES

FSM4061 Advanced Food Service Operations Management

Manage service at one of our fully functional restaurants on campus. You’ll develop menus and marketing, schedule staff, plan production, direct operations and manage fiscal responsibilities for the restaurant.

Strategic Marketing

Marketing is a key part of having success in the hospitality industry — explore how you can build relationships with your guests using integrated marketing communications, strategic planning, positioning and more.

Hospitality Management

JoyOrchestrate

This is a program for people who love shaping experiences and creating unique moments for others. You’ll learn about hotels, events, tourism, strategy, human resources and other key components of hospitality in your core courses before diving more deeply into specific areas with a range of electives or an optional specialization.

Food & Beverage Management

Learn the ins and outs of managing restaurants. Plus, you’ll get to develop a menu and manage service at one of our fully functional restaurants on campus.

Hotel & Resort Management

A magical stay at a hotel or resort is all about the details — discover what happens behind the scenes to make guest dreams come true. You’ll participate in site visits to local hotels to see how they operate.

Sustainable Tourism (Providence Campus only)

Explore the exciting tourism industry and how it impacts the world. Your courses will cover food culture, geography, international policies and more. The highlight of this specialization is the international trip you and your classmates will plan and execute.

Sports, Entertainment, Event — Management (SEEM)

Whether it’s a big playoff game, a major concert or a beautiful wedding, a lot of planning and preparation happens behind the scenes to wow a crowd. SEEM students have many exciting opportunities to create events for their peers and work with industry clients through internships and course projects.

A highlight of the program is the opportunity to plan major events on campus. In Charlotte, students plan and execute the SEEM Forum, a conference that features a keynote speaker, a panel, a luncheon, a career fair and networking sessions. In Providence, students plan and execute SEEM Week, a series of on-campus events that include a concert, a Career Expo and the annual Leadership Conference. SEEM students can also explore other areas of the industry with a wide variety of electives or by selecting an optional specialization.

Learn how to masterfully plan and manage parties, weddings, conferences, trade shows and more in courses like Weddings & Ceremonies and International Exhibitions & Events.

Sports Management

Discover what it takes to manage a professional sports organization or athlete at any level with courses such as Professional Sport Management.

Live Entertainment Management

Get a backstage pass to the live entertainment industry, where you’ll learn how to manage and produce live acts in courses like Concert, Tour and Music Festival Production Management.

A Tale of Two Cities

Though you’ll discover many unique qualities about Johnson & Wales, one of our most distinct features is that we have two campuses: Charlotte, North Carolina, and Providence, Rhode Island. Each city has a different vibe, but they both offer thriving restaurant scenes, luxury hotels, live event venues, professional sports teams and growing tourism industries for students to take advantage of.

See for yourself by planning a visit at jwu.edu/visit Students who visit campus for an in-person tour or admissions event before November 17 of their senior year of high school could be eligible for a JWU Visit Grant of up to $5,000 annually, renewable up to four years at JWU.

Labs Five-Star

Providence

SEEM Lab

This collaborative space features a 20-foot-wide interactive screen and a high-tech conference room, as well as design nods to TD Garden in Boston to set the scene for SEEM classes.

Bigelow Tea Beverage Lab

Dedicated to our partnership with Bigelow Tea, this lab is used for beverage courses in which students conduct a variety of beverage tastings and learn about food pairing.

Bistro 61

A learning lab that doubles as a fully functional restaurant, Bistro 61 is where the FSM4061 Advanced Food Service Operations course offers dining service to members of the JWU community.

Charlotte

Hospitality Dining Room

Charlotte’s FSM4061 Advanced Food Service Operations courses use this learning lab/restaurant to offer dining service (and stunning city skyline views) to members of the JWU community.

Culinary Arts Beverage Lab

Students practice modern bar service and making cocktails in this lab, which has workstations that mimic a real bar layout for an authentic experience.

Hospitality Sensory Beverage Lab

In this space, students learn how to conduct tastings of wine and other beverages, as well as the art of food pairing.
