Friday We depart from Henley in the morning, travelling to Devon, arriving late afternoon at our chosen hotel in Barnstaple or Bideford for our 2-night stay.
Saturday Enjoy the charm and friendly atmosphere of Barnstaple’s Pannier Market, one of Britain’s largest indoor markets, where there’s something for everyone. Largely unchanged in over 150 years, you will discover a wide range of stalls, with everything from fresh local produce, flowers and crafts, to prints and pictures, fashion and much more. Ideally located on the bustling High Street, the market is a must-see attraction for all visitors to the town.
Sunday Departing our hotel we travel to Lynton & Lynmouth situated on the north coast of Devon, then onwards through ‘Little Switzerland’ to Dunster which houses over 200 listed buildings preserved so that generations can enjoy the historic qualities of this unique village. Return home during the early evening.

Saturday A free day to explore Sidmouth. In the afternoon, make the most of our hotels luxurious surroundings Sunday Tucked away in a corner of East Devon, is the beautiful, unspoilt Axe Valley and the friendly, coastal resort of Seaton. The town’s unique tramway, which operates between Seaton, Colyford and Colyton, travels alongside the River Axe estuary through two nature reserves and giving an unrivalled view of the abundant wading bird life. Return home during the early evening.

There is nothing like a blast of sea air to rejuvenate and relax, especially on the beautiful south coast of England. This lovely break is centred on the beautiful English Riviera, a section of Devonian coastline dotted with idyllic seaside resorts, unspoilt coves and picturepostcard towns. We visit some of these delightful towns from our base in the traditional resort of Torquay.

Friday Enjoy a leisurely journey to Torquay, arriving during the afternoon. One of Britain’s most famous resorts, it is situated at the heart of 22 miles of unspoilt coastline, it is often referred to as the “English Riviera”. It has a mild climate, sparkling blue waters and in its beautiful public gardens, you will see subtropical plants and palm trees. With something to offer everyone, no wonder it is so popular.
Saturday Why not join us for a half-day excursion to Brixham and Paignton? We head first to Brixham, a pretty fishing port with a bustling waterside fringed by colourful houses on the surrounding hillsides. The harbour is also home to a replica of Sir Francis Drake’s ship, the Golden Hind. We then spend some time in Paignton with its long, sandy beaches, lively seafront and fantastic views across Torbay. Sunday A leisurely morning in Torquay before returning home after lunch.
Dawlish is a fascinating little regency town huddled attractively between steep surrounding hills. There are several popular beaches here including Dawlish Warren. Meanwhile in the middle of the town there is a flat landscaped area called ‘The Lawn’, home to various wildfowl and the famous Dawlish black swans.

Located next to the seafront it is just a short level walk to the town and harbour. Facilities include swimming pool, gymnasium and spa, restaurant, lounge bar and dance floor with nightly entertainment. Sunday Enjoy a leisurely journey to Exeter, where we can discover 2,000 years of history in its heritage attractions, such as the Gothic St Peter’s Cathedral and the Roman City Wall. Explore beneath the city’s streets at Exeter’s Underground Passages, medieval passages originally built to bring fresh water into the city in medieval times. From here, we continue to our hotel in Dawlish for our 2-night stay. Monday A day at leisure in our resort. Dawlish seafront and town are an attractive mixture of Regency and Victorian style and you can stroll along the Strand enjoying a range of interesting shops. Dawlish is home to the famous black swans, which you can find around The Brook and the public green called The Lawn.
Tuesday Departing our hotel, we visit the beautiful family resort of Exmouth, with its 2mile-long seafront, lovely cliff walks with stunning views of the bay. It has an excellent beach and plenty of sea front attractions will keep everyone entertained. for a few hours before returning home during the afternoon.

Bath is a great choice for a short city break. This ancient city has countless beautiful and historic attractions all within convenient walking distance. Visit the ancient Roman Baths, one of the most renowned of the city’s historic attractions or enjoy the architectural splendour of the iconic Royal Crescent and Pulteney Bridge. Our tour also allows you to marvel at the mysterious and mythical World Heritage site of Stonehenge.

Friday We journey south over the Salisbury Plain and head to Stonehenge – the best known pre-historic monument in Europe. Explore the ancient landscape on foot and step inside the Neolithic Houses to discover the tools and objects of everyday Neolithic life. Visit the world-class exhibition and visitor centre with 250 ancient objects and come face to face with a 5,500-year-old man. We continue to our hotel in the afternoon for our 2-night stay.
Saturday One of England’s most appealing destinations, Bath is a strikingly beautiful city with a rich history and abundance of exquisite architectural treasures including the ancient Roman baths, the majestic Abbey and iconic Royal Crescent. The city’s compact centre is teeming with museums and galleries to discover alongside a superb range of places to eat and drink, plus some of the finest independent shops in Britain. Sunday Departing our hotel we travel north to the enchanting Cotswolds for a visit to Cirencester, a charming Roman town where attractions include Cirencester Park, the New Brewery Arts, a Roman Amphitheatre, and the Corinium Museum. We then continue via Birdlip Hill with magnificent views over the Severn Vale and the Cotswolds Hills, returning home late afternoon.

This wonderful Grade II listed building is a Georgian Country House retreat, set in 5 acres of landscaped grounds within a walled garden and the hotel’s own Vineyards overlooking the picturesque Wiltshire Downs on the outskirts of Bradford-on-Avon. Restaurant, Bar/Lounge. Mobility Grade: 2. The locality is reasonably level. 2 steps to main entrance with isolated stairs and steps throughout the Hotel. No lift but rooms are mainly on ground &

Friday We journey south west, to Cheddar Gorge, viewing the highest inland cliffs in the country before arriving in the cathedral city of Wells. Situated in Somerset, this medieval city is the smallest in England. Vicars Close is claimed to be Europe’s most complete medieval street, with houses dating from 1348. The Cathedral Church of Saint Andrew, commonly known as Wells Cathedral, is set in the middle of the city and was erected between the 12th and 15th centuries. Bishop’s Palace, and its accompanying Bishop’s House, is still home to the Bishop of Bath and Wells and is situated adjacent to the Cathedral. (Entrance fees apply). In the afternoon we check in to the nearby Swan Hotel for dinner and our 2-night stay.
Saturday Beautiful Bath is today’s destination. The city has remained faithful to its Regency roots, with an abundance of elegant terraces, circuses and squares in a picturesque valley setting. The magnificent Royal Crescent is a must-see and the central square is home not only to Bath Abbey, but also the ancient Roman Baths. The city has an excellent selection of shops; especially along the Pulteney Bridge, one of only four bridges in the world to feature shops across its full span on both sides.
Sunday Departing our hotel, we visit Brunel’s engineering masterpiece SS Great Britain, one of the most important ships in the world and known as ‘the greatest experiment since the Creation’ when it was launched in 1843. Brunel combined size, power and the pioneering technology of a screw propeller to create a ship that changed history. During this captivating excursion we learn about the ship’s fascinating history in the Dockyard Museum, head beneath the glass sea and even step onto the ship itself. Afterwards we enjoy a cruise around Bristol Harbour.

Charming, stylish and full of history, the picturesque market town of Arundel in West Sussex is probably most famous for two stunning landmarks – Arundel Castle and Arundel Cathedral. We also visit Chichester – a town that was important in Roman times in the first century AD and still has some Roman remains today.

Sunday We drive to Arundel where we are free to explore this old market town.
The historic 19th century cathedral overlooks the town from the west bank of the river Arun and is a fine example of gothic architecture, whereby the towering stately home and fortified castle, that has been the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestors since 1067, conceals a very fine collection of furniture, paintings, clocks, tapestries, armour and much more, including personal possessions of Mary, Queen of Scots. Tonight, we enjoy dinner and overnight accommodation at the Norfolk Arms Hotel.
Monday Steeped in over 2000 years of history, Chichester is our delightful destination today. Dominated by the 900-year-old Cathedral the town has many fine buildings and also offers the visitor excellent shopping. We commence our journey homewards in the afternoon.
The Battle of Britain was a major air campaign fought largely over southern England in the summer and autumn of 1940, in which the RAF defended the United Kingdom against large-scale attacks by Nazi Germany’s air force, the Luftwaffe.
Join us on this memorial tour to Kent to discover why, in the words of Sir Winston Churchill, "Never was so much owed by so many to so few"!

Friday We head to Bentley Priory Museum, to uncover the fascinating story of this beautiful Grade II listed country house, focusing on its role as Headquarters Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain. Explore the important stories of those who defended our skies and those who worked tirelessly on the ground that allowed Britain’s darkest hour to also be her finest hour. We continue to RAF Hendon – a museum that celebrates the story of aviation from the Wright Brothers to the RAF of the 21st century, with one of the world’s finest collections of legendary aircraft and associated exhibits. We then continue to our hotel for our 2-night stay.
Saturday We visit the Battle of Britain Museum at Hawkinge, a former RAF base where much of the 1960s film about the battle was filmed; the museum has many of the aircraft used in the film plus an incredible collection of memorabilia. Next, we continue to the striking RAF memorial at Capel-le-Ferne, dedicated to those who flew and gave their lives in the Battle of Britain.
Sunday Departing after breakfast we visit RAF Manston where we see the Spitfire and Hurricane Museum and small museum dedicated to the RAF Station. We continue to Canterbury before returning home during the late afternoon.
The Norfolk Arms Hotel is a charming Georgian Coaching Inn set in the stunning town of Arundel in West Sussex. Set on the town’s popular High Street, located in the shadow of Arundel Castle, the hotel is anything but old – with its newly refurbished restaurant and bars, offering you a quintessentially wonderful place to eat, drink and stay. Please note that the hotel does not have a lift and some rooms are limited in height, which may not be suitable for guests with mobility restrictions. Some ground floor rooms are available upon specific request.
The 4 star Best Western Plus Burlington Hotel is a charming Victorian building in the West end of Folkestone. Set in tranquil surroundings and overlooking the English Channel, this familyfriendly hotel was built in the 1890s and still holds its Victorian charm, whilst offering all the mod cons you’d expect of a contemporary hotel. Just a 10-minute walk from Folkestone’s town centre.
Follow a trail of thousands of snowdrops starting to emerge from their winter hibernation on Hever Castle’s Snowdrop Walk – the first sign that spring is just around the corner. Then stroll through the gardens and enjoy the early blossoms of camellia and quince. We also visit Leeds Castle, widely regarded as the most beautiful castle in the world!

Sunday We head to Hever Castle – built in the 13th century and former home of Anne Boleyn. Around 70,000 bulbs have been planted in the Gardens over the past few years to create a heavenly carpet of snowdrops providing a magical trail for visitors to follow. We recommend that you wear suitable footwear such as Wellington boots or walking boots as the ground may be boggy in places. We continue to our hotel in time for dinner and our overnight stay. Monday After breakfast we journey to Leeds Castle. Built on two islands in the middle of a lake. This classic English castle is surrounded by 500 acres of parkland and gardens. Ample time here at leisure for you to explore this delightful historic setting before returning home in the early evening.

Friday We journey south to the Denbies Wine Estate at Dorking where we include an Indoor Wine Tasting Experience at their indoor cinema. Enjoy a glass of sparkling wine in the cinema followed by a tasting of four of Denbies award winning wines. (Length of tour: Approx 1 hour). The tour starts in the cinema featuring ‘The Vineyard Through the Seasons’. Learn about the geology and history of the estate and experience the changes in the vineyard through the seasons and appreciate the wine making process from vine to bottle. From here, it is a short drive to our hotel for our 2-night stay. During our stay we will be treated to a glorious dinner where a wine professional will pair a delicious wine with each course and explain its history and the reasons, he has chosen that particular wine. Sunday After breakfast we head to the rather special flagship garden of the Royal Horticultural Society at Wisley which can rightly claim to be one of the finest gardens in the world and is a place full of inspiration, with its spectacular floral displays, the Wild Garden, the Model Gardens and the state-of-the-art Glasshouse. We return home in the late afternoon.

Let the winter blues melt away as you step inside the tropical paradise of the Princess of Wales Conservatory at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and admire its transformation into a celebration of magnificent plant life and fascinating habitats. One of London’s top tourist attractions, Kew Gardens is the world’s largest collection of living plants. Founded in 1840, from the exotic garden at Kew Park its living collections include more than 30,000 different kinds of plants, while the herbarium, which is one of the largest in the world, has over seven million preserved plant specimens.

Saturday Departing Henley we travel to Kew Gardens. Get immersed in a celebration of beauty and nature in the tropical paradise! Each year in late February Kew Gardens’ Princess of Wales Conservatory holds amazing Orchids Festival. It features a large flower display as well as opportunities to find out about the naming of orchids, their preservation, and how to care for the flowers at home. Every year the festival has a different theme and in 2023 Kew celebrates the richness of Costa Rica with wonderful creative designs and colourful floral displays on show in the tropical glasshouse. We continue in the afternoon to our hotel for our overnight stay. Sunday After breakfast we visit the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum where we include an audio guided tour of the museum which showcases the artistry and athleticism that is modern day tennis. Donated items from legendary players are on display, as well as the glittering Championship trophies. A virtual reality experience offers a fascinating look into the complete story of Tennis. We also include a guided tour of the grounds, giving you an exclusive inside look at Wimbledon and the Championships. We commence our journey home during the mid-afternoon.
The Massed Bands of the Royal Marines have performed at the Royal Albert Hall for over 40 years. Originally these concerts were given in commemoration of Sir Malcolm Sargent who, for some 20 years, was the Honorary Musical Advisor to the Royal Marines Band Service. Following the death of Earl Mountbatten of Burma, who was Life Colonel Commandant of the Royal Marines, the concerts were renamed in 1980. The link with Sir Malcolm Sargent continues through the charity, CLIC Sargent, which together with Royal Navy and Royal Marines charities, is the principal beneficiary of the money raised by these concerts.

Saturday We travel to London for some free time before checking into our hotel mid-afternoon. In the evening we will take you to The Royal Albert Hall for a performance of the Massed Bands of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines – The Mountbatten Festival of Music. The festival sees the Royal Marines showcase their incredible musicianship and pageantry and features a wide range of musical styles, including music from the big screen and superb solo items, as well as the traditional marches and overtures that have proved such a hit with audiences over the years.
Sunday After breakfast we head to the historical town of Windsor, where you will have time to visit Windsor Castle or wander around the shops and enjoy some lunch in one of the many restaurants. We return home during the early evening.

Monday After our leisurely full cooked buffet breakfast we enjoy free time with ‘London’ on your doorstep – Covent Garden, The Strand, Westminster, The Thames and Oxford Street are just a stone’s throw away. We leave London at 4.00pm and return back to the Midlands.
Probably the most prestigious horticultural event of the year! Visitors from all over the world flock to Chelsea to gain inspiration from over 500 exhibitors and to see some of the most vibrant displays and stunning show gardens. Set the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea , the flower show is a must for the greenest fingered or even those that want the latest technology in their garden, it’s sure to be here!
Our weekend will also include a visit to Windsor Castle.

Saturday Today we head Windsor Castle, where admission to the majestic castle is included. Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th century, the castle is the largest and oldest occupied castle in the world and has been a Royal Palace and fortress for over 900 years. After, free time in Windsor we continue to our hotel for dinner and our overnight stay Sunday After breakfast we journey to the Chelsea Flower Show. Enjoy the magnificent displays, and expect cutting edge, stylish designs in the artistic and colourful show gardens. You will find the top nurseries from all over the world will be there to wow the crowds in the Grand Pavilion, as well as a host of retail opportunities to delight visitors. We leave late afternoon to commence our homeward journey.

Sunday Departing Henley we journey to Suffolk where we pause at Fullers Mill Garden – an enchanting and tranquil waterside and woodland garden, situated on the banks of the River Lark at West Stow in Suffolk.
It combines a beautiful site of light dappled woodland with a fabulous collection of rare and unusual shrubs, perennials, lilies and marginal plants, collected over the course of 50 years by the creator of the garden Bernard Tickner. From here, it is a short drive to our hotel where we arrive in time for dinner and our 2-night stay.
Monday Today we visit Lavenham. Known as England’s best preserved medieval village and one of Suffolk’s important wool towns, you can spend time exploring one of the most picturesque villages in England. Later, we visit Kentwell Hall Gardens – a romantic, moated, mellow red brick Tudor mansion in a tranquil parkland setting. Tuesday Departing after breakfast we visit Chippenham Park Gardens – a thriving family estate. The house, gardens, and park were created at the very end of the 17th century. The gardens have been awarded the highest two-star rating by the Good Gardens Guide and are notable for their vast swathes of snowdrops and aconites in late winter followed by a superb spring show of daffodils, hellebores, spring bulbs and blossoms.
Join us on this tour to the undiscovered county of Lincolnshire – A region packed full of aviation history, as well as witnessing great moments from medieval times to the present day. We will enjoy visits to the Bomber command Centre and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitors Centre.

Sunday Enjoy a leisurely drive into Lincolnshire’s ‘Bomber Country’ – this beautiful area is stacked with aviation history. We visit the Bomber Command Centre – a world class facility that serves as a point of recognition and remembrance for Bomber Command. From here we continue to our hotel arriving in time for dinner and our overnight stay. After dinner, sit back and listen as we pay tribute to Dame Vera Lynn. Performed by Lorrie Brown who is the UK’s No.1 Vera Lynn tribute performer. Lorrie has performed her show all around the country in theatres and 1940’s festivals. She will perform many of Vera Lynn’s greatest hits including ‘A Nightingale Sang in Leicester Square’, ‘I’ll Be Seeing You’, and of course ‘We’ll Meet Again’. Sunday We travel to stunning Belvoir Castle, a majestic spectacle set high on a hill offering breath-taking views across several English counties. Built in the early 1800, discover its spectacular interiors, including the lavish bedroom suites and magnificent state rooms. Wander outside and explore the beautifully established Formal Gardens at Belvoir Castle, including the relaxing and tranquil Japanese Woodland, Hermit’s Garden and enjoy excellent colour displays and beautiful scents in the Duchess Garden and Rose Garden.
Monday Departing after breakfast we travel to Chatsworth House, home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and one of the country’s grandest stately homes. Chatsworth has over 30 rooms to explore, from the magnificent Painted Hall to the family-used chapel, regal state rooms and beautiful Sculpture Gallery. There will also be time to explore the fantastic grounds and gardens. Following our visit, we travel to nearby Bakewell, a market town located within the Derbyshire Dales, known also for its local Bakewell pudding, before returning home during the early evening.
Take a trip down the nation’s most famed street, on a guided tour which takes in Coronation Street, Rosamund Street and Victoria Street. A chance to step on to the largest working television set in the country and be immersed in the familiar surroundings of the Rovers Return, Roy’s Rolls, Underworld and The Kabin.

Sunday Today we visit Jodrell Bank – a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is a must for anyone interested in space and the night sky. Sunday We travel westwards pausing in the historic town of Ludlow, with its lovely 11th century Ludlow Castle situated on a cliff above the River Teme, surrounded by the beautiful countryside of south Shropshire and the Welsh Marches. From here we continue to Llandrindod Wells, arriving in the afternoon for dinner and our overnight stay. Monday A morning at leisure in Llandrindod Wells before visiting the famous Elan Valley to view the amazing Victorian dams which form five magnificent man-made lakes and a 73 square mile wildlife park. We make a short stop at the Visitor Centre to view the exhibition before commencing a scenic circular drive accompanied by a Ranger guide.
Travel back in time to explore North East Wales’ magnificent history. Chirk Castle is the last Welsh castle from Edward I’s reign still lived in today. Set in a stunning location with award winning gardens, it is well worth a visit. Erddig Hall is the winner of the UKTV History “Britain’s best” historic house and is a fascinating place to explore.

Saturday We travel north to Chirk Castle (NT). Completed in 1310, it is the last Welsh castle from the reign of Edward I, which is still lived in today. Features from its 700 years include the medieval tower and dungeon, 18th-century servants’ hall and 17thcentury Long Gallery. It has a grand 18th-century state apartment with elaborate plasterwork, Adam-style furniture, tapestries and portraits. Discover the award-winning gardens that cover 5.5 acres of manicured lawns, clipped yews, herbaceous borders, beautiful rose, shrub and rock gardens, and the wooded pleasure ground – perfect for a stroll. Please note access is via an incline, however a shuttle bus service operates from the car park to the castle. From here it is a short drive to our Hotel for our 2-night stay.

Overlooking a restored formal 18th-century walled garden with Victorian parterre, Yew Walk and National Collection of Ivies, Erddig is one of the most fascinating houses in Britain. We continue to Chester, where we discover a small city with a big history! Explore the medieval city with its 900-year-old Cathedral, Roman walls and half-timbered houses –Chester is a historical gem. Monday This morning we drive to Liverpool’s Historic Waterfront, where we can discover five world class attractions – The Albert Dock, Famous Mersey Ferries, The Tate Gallery Liverpool, The Beatles Story and the Merseyside Maritime Museum. Free time to explore this great city before returning home in the late afternoon.

Stroll along the promenade, take in the charming pier, enjoy a ride on the famous tramway or sample the modern shops. The stunning seaside town offers so much to see and do you really are spoilt for choice. Sunday Leaving the hotel today we enjoy the scenery of the stunning Llanberis Pass and Snowdonia’s spectacular landscape. We drop down into Betws-y-Coed and enjoy a stop in this lovely town before continuing on our journey home.
Step aboard the superb Waverley Paddle Steamer and wave goodbye to Glasgow as we set sail on the last seagoing paddle steamer in the world! Named after Sir Walter Scott’s Waverley novels, the ship embarked on her maiden voyage in 1947. Thursday Travelling north we arrive at our hotel in time for dinner. Friday Today we head to the dock at the Glasgow Science Centre to catch our morning departure on the Waverley Paddle Steamer for a return journey to Rothesay on the world’s last seagoing paddle steamer. We travel “doon the watter” on the River Clyde, historically one of Glasgow resident’s favourite holiday trips. When on board the Waverley we can visit the engine room and see the mighty steam engine power the ship’s massive paddle wheels. The Waverley also has a traditional dining saloon serving a range of meals and snacks, also period lounges so the beautiful coastline can be enjoyed from the Promenade Deck or the comfort of a seat indoors. We have a short pause to explore the Victorian seaside resort of Rothesay before embarking on our return journey.
The scheduled sailing times are: Depart Glasgow 10.00am Arrive Rothesay 1.15pm. Depart Rothesay 2.50pm – Arrive Glasgow 6.00pm Saturday After breakfast, we make our way home.

Great Breaks Booking – For a provisional booking, a simple telephone call is all that is needed. We will hold places for you without obligation for 7 days. (Please note: provisional bookings will be cancelled automatically if payment is not received within 7 days).
Confirmation of Booking – In order to confirm your booking, we require a £50 per person deposit within 7 days. Once received we will send you your Great Breaks confirmation, the number and location of seats booked and confirmed departure time. Your final balance will be due 8 weeks prior to departure.
Methods of Payment – All normal methods of payment, including cash, cheque, by debit and credit card and by telephone or by post are acceptable. PLEASE MAKE CHEQUES PAYABLE TO: ‘Johnsons (Henley) Limited’.
Cancellation by the Company – Should circumstances arise where, due to less than 20 bookings, we are forced to cancel a Great Break holiday all monies paid by all passengers for that particular excursion will be refunded and following that the Company shall be exempt from any further liability.
Cancellation by the Passenger – You may cancel your Great Break holiday at any time and provided that we receive notice of cancellation within 56 days (8 weeks) of the departure date, then we will refund you the value of the break, less a £20 cancellation charge and the value of your travel insurance premium. No refunds can be given for cancellations made less than 56 days prior to departure. You may be able to claim back the cost of your Great Break (less the insurance premium and the insurance excess charge) through your travel insurance which can be purchased at the time of booking.

Alterations – The company reserves the right to alter or cancel any of the Great Breaks listed in this brochure, and to alter the size and specification of the vehicle used.
If you Change Your Booking – If, after our confirmation has been issued, you wish to change to another of our holidays or change departure date, we will do our utmost to make the changes, but we cannot guarantee to do so. However, notification must be received in writing at our offices from the person who signed the booking form. This must be accompanied by a payment of £20 to cover our administrative costs, plus costs we incur in making the amendment. Alterations may not be able to be made within 6 weeks of departure and any such request for an alteration will be treated as a cancellation of the original booking and will be subject to the cancellation charges set out in paragraph below. Some arrangements cannot be changed without paying a cancellation charge of up to 100% of the ticket cost.
