CELEBRATING A YEAR OF SUCCESS & STRENGTH

2020-2021 COMMUNITY REPORT

WE ARE ONE Looking back on our SUCCESSES and STRENGTHS during a tough year.

2020 was a difficult year for many. The COVID-19 pandemic changed all of our lives, some in unimaginable ways. It changed the way we worked, the way we learned, the way we lived, the way we socialized, and so on. For some, COVID-19 meant the loss of loved ones or jobs. Our deepest condolences go out to those who faced such loss. At last, however, it feels as if our circumstances are moving onward and upward. Here at JCC, there were many challenges we faced in helping our students, faculty, and staff navigate this pandemic more safely. Though there were certainly tweaks along the way, we are proud to say we were able to keep our students learning online. This May, 675 students graduated with a combined 812 Associate and Diploma degrees. Another 217 students received more than 500 certificates. We are proud of what they accomplished in the midst of a pandemic. We are proud they chose JCC. We are grateful for the opportunity to have helped them reach their goals. What we accomplished during 2020 as a community college was quite extraordinary, too. We immediately pivoted instruction and workflow so our staff, faculty, and students would be safer. We converted seated classes to hybrid or synchronous, employees began working remotely, we sanitized our facilities, and created an Emergency Management Team to lead all COVID efforts. We unveiled new areas of study in Health and Fitness Science, Cyber Security, Digital Media Technology, Public Safety Administration, Supply Chain Management, Teacher Prep, Practical Nursing, and a Business Entrepreneur Certificate. All of these, we know, will be valuable in a post-COVID world. We also were able to use CARES Act funding to purchase classrooms on wheels, or COWS, for short. These state-of-the-art mobile classrooms allow instructors to teach virtually while a camera follows them around the room. We were able to use that same funding to craft a small studio space for instructors to

2 | 2020-2021 COMMUNITY REPORT

use for virtual lectures or. These too, will be valuable tools post-COVID. We created a Student Emergency Fund through the JCC Foundation which provides emergency funding to students facing an unforeseen financial crisis. We formed a Culture, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Leadership Team, and three commissions to enhance belonging at JCC, along with a Culture Statement. That statement is available on our website, and we believe it encompasses a renewed spirit of diversity, inclusion and the things that bind us all together. This fall, students returned to campus. We are using a mix of in-person and online instruction to help meet their needs. We are excited to see their faces again and get back to some sense of normalcy. Though we know our lives will never be the same, we must all be nimble in order to grow as a college and as a community. We are excited for what’s to come. In 2021, we will witness the construction of our new state-ofthe-art Engineering Building, which will open in early 2022. We will become the first community college in the state to begin training in a highly specialized platform called DeltaV for our BioBlend students. And we will get our Esports program off the ground. We will also bring more video and social media content to our students and community. As you can see, we did not lose one step in the midst of COVID. I am so proud of the many ways our faculty and staff committed to facilitating student success. And I thank you for your unflagging dedication to the college. This work we do together is important. It makes the difference in so many lives across Johnston County. Thank you for sharing the opportunity to serve.

JCC’s Quality Enhancement Plan to Focus on Students’ First Year Experience Johnston Community College is in the midst of creating its next Quality Enhancement Plan. The QEP is a comprehensive review required by JCC’s accreditation body, SACSCOC. It is a roadmap for the next five years and reflects JCC’s affirmation to student success. After reviewing vast amounts of data and student focus group responses, the idea for a First Year Experience emerged as Johnston Community College’s next QEP. The plan is designed to foster belonging, community, and student success at JCC. The initial plan was divided into three components: Orientation, Advising, and Campus Engagement. Students, faculty, and staff are engaged in the QEP in a number of ways. Faculty and staff serve on committees which work together to implement the plan. Students are asked for feedback and will be invited to participate in marketing campaigns. In 2022, SACSCOC will send a committee to the college for an on-site visit where they will be engaged in discussions and a review of the QEP.

The TRIO program at Johnston Community College created the Elevation Market to address the food insecurities that many JCC students face while they are working to complete their education. During the week of March 15-21, Publix in Clayton rallied behind the College as cashiers wore JCC shirts and asked shoppers to donate to the Elevation Market. Publix matched donations dollar for dollar, raising $10,000 to provide food to JCC students in need.

2020-2021 STRATEGIC PLAN During the 2020-2021 academic year, JCC created its 2021-2026 Strategic Plan. LINDA VANN LASSITER WOMEN’S SOCIETY PHILANTHROPIST OF THE YEAR

The Foundation hosted a virtual celebration to recognize the nominees and winner of the 2021 Linda Vann Lassiter Women’s Society Philanthropist of the Year Award. This honor is awarded annually to an individual who has made a positive impact in the community through giving, and whose philanthropic leadership sets an inspiring example for all.

DIANNE RILEY-GRAY This year’s winner was Dianne Riley-Gray of Selma. Riley-Gray spent 40 years in education, until her retirement, both in public schools and at the University of Mount Olive. She currently serves in a volunteer role with Friends of the Children and has previously served at The Free Will Baptist Children’s Home. Nominees this year included Ruth Anderson of Clayton, Jennifer Narron-Hardy of Smithfield, and State Rep. Donna White, also of Clayton. The Linda Vann Lassiter Women’s Society was established in 2019 to honor the late Linda Vann Lassiter, who served on the board of the Johnston Community College Foundation. The Society brings together women from diverse backgrounds with a common goal: to improve the lives of those in the community and to emulate the values that Linda held so dear through faith, family, and philanthropy.

“Linda was such a selfless individual who strongly advocated for everyone to have access to higher education,” states Dr. Twyla Wells, Vice President of Advancement at JCC. “The JCC Foundation is honored to continue the legacy of Linda as we remove barriers to education,” Dr. Wells adds. Members of the Society share gifts of their time, talents, and annual financial contributions to the Linda Vann Lassiter Women’s Society Endowment Fund. The long-term goal of the Endowment Fund is to ensure every rising 8th grade female student in Johnston County will be eligible to receive the LVLWS Scholarship and to attend JCC upon graduation from high school.

JCC ALUMNI NEWS Cassi Narron Alumna Cassi Narron started her journey at JCC right after high school in order to determine her career path. While attending JCC, she became a tutor with TRIO, a program designed to assist underserved students with reaching academic and personal success. During a tutoring session with a continuing education student, Cassi learned about the JCC BioWork Certificate Program aimed at preparing students for a career in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and chemical manufacturing. Shortly after graduating in 2007 with her associate’s degree, Cassi received her BioWork certificate and landed a job at Grifols in Clayton. After working with the global health care company for a few years, Cassi returned to JCC as a biotechnology instructor. “After I enrolled in the BioWork program I started to see how cool it was, and I was able to see the impact the program had on older adults trying to make a change and lift themselves up,” Cassi shared. It was a really inspiring program for me, so I encouraged my brother and my father to go through the program.” Seeing Cassi’s success persuaded her brother, Zac, and father, Brian, to complete the BioWork program. Soon after completing their certification, they both transitioned from jobs in manufacturing and trucking to start new careers at Novo Nordisk, a pharmaceutical company in Clayton. “Dad was the happiest he had ever been when he started at Novo Nordisk because he had finally landed a job that offered him stability,” stated Cassi.

14 | 2020-2021 COMMUNITY REPORT

In his fifth year of employment at Novo Nordisk, Brian was diagnosed with cancer. “Dad’s cancer was aggressive, and it progressed quickly, but he said one of the saddest things about the whole experience is when he found out he could not go back to work, said Cassi. “Dad loved his job that much, and the BioWork program is what gave him the opportunity to work his most fulfilling job.” When Brian passed, Cassi and Zac honored his memory and established the Brian Charles Griffith Scholarship to support JCC students in the BioWork Certificate Program. “Establishing a scholarship at JCC was a natural choice to honor my dad’s commitment to education and pay tribute to the path that led him to the career that he loved so much,” Cassi expressed. “We wanted to establish the scholarship because there’s a lot of Brians in the world, and there are a lot of older adults who are trying to better themselves and raise their families, so we wanted to give people the chance to do that - just like my dad.” “Support to Johnston Community College can change the entire course of someone’s life and impact families, Cassi explained. “I love the fact that we’re going to be able to pay for someone to go through the program so they can land a good job,” she added. That opportunity can change the entire trajectory of their lives.”

JCC STUDENT EXPERIENCE Guendlynn Grimmick With graduation quickly approaching, Florida native Guendlynn Grimmick has accomplished a lot during her time as a student at Johnston Community College. Guendlynn arrived to Johnston County with her family in 2017 when her father accepted a new job opportunity. She started at JCC in the dual enrollment program, and was introduced to the Honors Experience where she worked closely with faculty on a research project related to her academic and career goals. After joining the Honors Experience, Guendlynn received an award for best virtual presentation on her project about the effects of the COVID-19 virus on the human body. Her findings were also in a paper titled “SARS-CoV-2: Short and LongTerm Sequelae,” which was submitted to an undergraduate research publication. “I wanted my first ever Honors Experience project to be informative, intriguing, and relevant, Guendlynn expressed. “My main purpose of this project was to provide others access to accurate information regarding SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19).” Following her claim of the top award for her project, Guendlynn accepted the invitation to serve as the Honors Experience Ambassador only days before being inducted to Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society that recognizes the academic achievement of two-year college students.

She juggled her President’s list status and leadership role as the Honors Experience Ambassador while working at WakeMed Health and Hospitals in Raleigh, and as an associate at Barnes & Noble Bookstore at JCC. “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Honors Experience not only because I wanted to become a more involved student, but because I wanted to take something negative and turn it into a positive, Guendlynn explained. “The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our world as we know it, and through my projects, I was able to bring light to the effects of COVID-19 while fulfilling a dream of becoming a published undergraduate.” Guendlynn will be graduating from JCC with an Associate in Arts degree in December 2021. She will continue at JCC through May 2022 to complete the Nurse Aide Certificate Program before transferring to Appalachian State University to earn her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree, Guendlynn has plans to pursue a Master of Science degree in nursing, with a concentration in nursing education.

GROUNDBREAKING STATE-OF-THE-ART EN Construction is officially underway for JCC’s new 50,000 sq. ft. engineering building, which is being funded through a 2018 County Bond Referendum. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in April. HH Architecture is the project lead on the construction of the $15 million, 2-story building that is slated to open next year. “JCC’s Engineering Program has grown by more than 160% in just 6 years. The faculty and students were doing all this in barely sufficient facilities, but now we will be able to use these new facilities to train and educate for the 21st Century,” says President Dr. David Johnson. Among the speakers at the spring groundbreaking ceremony were County Commissioner Butch Lawter, JCC Board of Trustees Chair, Lyn Austin and Dave Carey, Principal of HH Architecture.

G CEREMONY FOR NGINEERING BUILDING Once complete, this state-of-the-art building will house a virtual reality studio, labs, offices, interactive classrooms, a theater-style lecture hall and more. The new facility will support the college’s expanding Associate in Engineering (AE) program and STEM-related disciplines. “I charged my faculty with coming up with designs that would make it the most technologically advanced academic building in Johnston County, so I feel good that we will have achieved that,” says Dawn Dixon, Associate Vice President of University Studies and Educational Technologies. Johnston Community College’s engineering program serves as a transfer pathway for students seeking bachelor’s degrees at four-year universities. Graduates have an 85% acceptance rate into those schools.

JCC LAUNCHES Esports PROGRAM

I’m close enough to an age where I can say, “back in my day” when someone mentions “Esports.” Back in my day, video games were a waste of time—at least from the perspective of ’80s and ’90s parents. The arcade was my babysitter when mom needed to run errands; playing video games was a hobby, much like watching TV. It wasn’t until I brought home my first cash winnings—a modest third place prize from my first road trip tournament—in a letter-sized envelope that my parents began to enthusiastically support my hobby. As “mallrats” and gamers, we never saw competitive video games moving a foot outside of the arcade, much less generating six-figure winnings and creating millionaires decades later. But that’s where we are now, and I say that thrilled, trembling and with goosebumps as I type this. It’s 2021, and a gamer can get an education doing what they love: competing in video game tournaments. At Johnston Community College, our Esports team competes in a variety of National Junior College Athletic Association

20 | 2020-2021 COMMUNITY REPORT

games, such as Valorant, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Overwatch, and Rocket League— just to name a few. Each game is different from the others. Think track and field and its many events. Just like any other collegiate sport, our student athletes will compete against other colleges across the region in a regular season, post-season, and supplemental tournaments, all from the comfort of our very own “decked out” esports arena featuring six high-powered gaming computers, a Nintendo Switch, and an Xbox One. The Jaguars’ season begins in late August 2021. I am excited and honored to be chosen as the first head coach to mentor these outstanding student athletes who share a passion for video games. As a professional gamer for several years, I built relationships, developed critical thinking skills, and won prize money. Now, these student athletes get the added bonus of doing all of that in an academic setting, which will open infinite possibilities beyond gaming.

WE ARE THE FOUNDATION Dear Alumni and Friends, On behalf of the JCC Foundation Board of Directors, Dr. David Johnson, and the College Trustees, we write to extend our most sincere gratitude for your generous support. This year more than ever, we are grateful to the individuals, business and corporate partners, as well as grantors who stood alongside us as we navigated the unchartered waters of a worldwide pandemic - all while working diligently to support our JCC students and the local community. It was no small feat, but we survived and for that, we thank you! During the 2020-2021 fiscal year, the College Foundation’s assets grew from $10,989,464 in 2020 to $13,362,224 as of June 30, 2021 – an increase of 21.59%! For the same time period, $3,692,344 in total revenues were generated, the result of contributions as well as the excellent performance of the Foundation’s long-term investments. All of these assets and gifts directly support the College, its mission and the important work of our faculty and staff who provide outstanding educational and workforce development opportunities to individuals in our county and region. Please allow us the opportunity to showcase some of the major accomplishments of the 2020-2021 fiscal year: The Foundation awarded over $245,000 in scholarship • funds to assist over 325 students in achieving their

educational goals

program’s inception, with an investment of JCC Foundation funds in the amount of $203,876. Initiated the JCC Student Emergency Support Fund, which has assisted 48 students. The goal of the program is to keep students who are in school and have otherwise planned for the cost of attendance on track to completing their educational goals. Professional Development Grants awarded to faculty and staff allow opportunities for implementing the most advanced techniques within their fields. The second JCC Alumni & Student Back To School Mixer was held, allowing students and JCC employees to socialize and get to know one another in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. The JCC Alumni Association has continued to build relationships with current JCC students and alumni to promote personal and professional growth and success. Black Student Alliance was started with funding from a donor within the JCC Foundation.

$1.3 million in Full Time Equivalent (FTE) • Generated funding since the Back to Class Alumni Scholarship

seventeen grants (including Higher Education • Secured Emergency Relief Fund grants due to COVID-19). TRiO Program received grant funding for the • JCC’s next five years in annual disbursements of $275,105 to

continue the program goals of motivating and helping students accomplish academic and personal success by offering comprehensive individual support. The Foundation was awarded a $185,994 grant from the Golden Leaf Foundation to establish a new welding fabrication program that will allow the college to provide specialized training for incumbent workers, add fabrication curriculum into its existing welding degree program and offer a stand-alone certification option. An additional award of $2,500 was received from “Nuts, Bolts and Thingamajigs” to provide summer camps as part of the larger Golden Leaf Foundation project. Successfully completed Title III eligibility which will allow the College to apply for future funding. The JCC Grants Development Office managed 25 grants in the amount of $15,427,317 which includes $13,839,464 in federal funds received through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund due to COVID-19.

• •

These private gifts have served to provide financial assistance to many who otherwise would have been unable to attend JCC. Please know your support is not only appreciated, but is used in a fiscally responsible manner. We know that none of this would be possible without the dedication and faithful support of our alumni and friends. Your support serves a critical role in enhancing our college and community and the lives of thousands of individuals. Again, thank you!! Sincerely, Randy Davis
