West Johnston High unveils new ‘Wildcat Café’ experience
FROM THE PUBLISHER
We’re sailing into uncharted waters Originally, I wrote a piece about attending Raise the Booty for this space. I guess the topic of my column is just one of the many things that has been changed because of the coronavirus. So, because of a number of cancellations and postponements, our magazine is a little smaller than usual this month. In addition, some of the things that are still scheduled as of our press time may end up getting pushed back as well. It’s a strange time for all of us. Restaurants are take-out only, gas prices are under $2 and still falling and there’s excitement when you find toilet paper at the grocery store.
Viewed in that context, the fact that we had to take a bucket of red ink to our last proof for this issue is not such a big deal.
As I wrote in the previous version of this column:
$18,000 for a Story Walk for the park. After Owen Daughtry’s presentation, I was struck by RANDY CAPPS the selflessness randy@johnstonnow.com of my friends and neighbors, who threw up their auction signs to give money so that kids walking through the park can know that there are others out there just like them. ... Nights like Raise the Booty remind me why I’m proud to call Johnston County home.
In total, Raise the Booty raised more than $58,000, which includes almost
We can do anything together. This is no different.
Still, we strive to provide our friends and neighbors with quality content and accurate calendar listings. That’s harder to do when we’re all staying inside for the foreseeable future. All we can do is our best, however, and that’s our pledge to you. So, if it’s listed in the calendar, you might want to call and see if the event is still happening.

Smithfield-Selma High School (SSS) named Deron Donald as its new head football coach recently. Donald, originally from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, most recently served as the Fayetteville E.E. 2020 Visitors Guide encourages Agritourism experiences in Johnston County Submitted by Johnston County Visitors Bureau
SMITHFIELD — The Johnston County Visitors Bureau (JCVB) is pleased to announce the arrival of the 2020 Official Johnston County Visitors Guide. This year’s guide encourages visitors to see “what’s growing in JoCo,” as a way to honor the farming community in the county and the agritourism venues that are hosting visitors and school groups with a variety of events. “Since 2004, the Visitors Bureau has been engaged with the development of agritourism in the county as a vehicle for farmers to sustain their farm by opening up to visitors. From the early days of corn mazes at Lazy O Farm to today’s thriving Clayton Farmer’s Market, more and more small farms are offering local produce, products and onfarm experiences,” said Donna Bailey-Taylor, JCVB President/CEO. JCVB prints 50,000 guides each year to promote the county and the guide is entirely sponsored by the 3 percent countywide occupancy tax, which is paid by

visitors to the county staying in area hotels. The guide provides potential visitors tools to plan a visit with suggested day-trip itineraries, details on area attractions and special travel deals like the Girls Weekend and Sip and Stay packages. Guides are distributed to all N.C. Welcome Centers, RDU International Airport, AAA Offices along the eastern seaboard and along I-40 west. Guides are in visitor centers across North Carolina, as well as, around the county in more than 125 locations such as hotels, attractions, Chambers of Commerce, town halls and retail stores. There are also digital options for visitors seeking agritourism experiences — the downloadable version of the visitors guide (which can be found on the JCVB website) and the new Visit NC Farms App. There are now more than 90 Johnston County farms, agribusinesses and agritourism events listed on the Visit NC Farms App, an ongoing initiative from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services. The app is a digital marketing tool aimed at the 10 million residents and over 50 million visitors to the state annually. Johnston County was one of the first counties to sign on to the program and continues to add JoCo participants. Doggie Life-Hack # 17 – Cue the Water! By Jason Ast
I think one of the most interesting aspects of owning/ working in a dog store…are the dog people, their dogs and the vast array of experiences and challenges that they share with us daily. We help dogs and their owners from all walks of life, with varied histories and conditions. From pure-breeds, designer pooches and rescues, to sporty hounds, personal protection dogs and couch potatoes. (Do we work hard? Yes! Do we have a blast working with dogs all day? What do you think!!??) One of the most common ‘items’ we recommend to customers regularly, is actually free (or nearly free), and can benefit every dog no matter their age, breed, health or condition today. That item is water. Just like people, 80% of a dog’s body is made of water. Water cleanses, nourishes and hydrates all living creatures on earth. But water can help with so much more than simple hydration. Here are some other important reasons you should add more water to your dog’s day. 1. For puppies, it’s not a bad idea to add some water to his kibble and let it soak for a bit. Since puppies are usually eager to swallow their meal quickly, they often miss the subtle ‘cues’ that tell them they are filling up. Since kibble expands once introduced to liquid, often puppies feel bloated after eating—and feel even ‘more full’ once the kibble expands in their belly. (think slow feeder) 2. Water helps aid your dog’s digestion. It is estimated that 90%+ of dog owners feed a kibble, or dry dog food. Kibble, by nature, is void of moisture (about 10%compared to canned food = 80%+). Since dogs rarely chew their food completely, large chunks of kibble are often swallowed. (This is why most dog-food manufacturers have gone to smaller kibble sizes). Your dog’s body sends available moisture to his belly to aid in digestion…so a little extra H20 can really help your best friend at dinner time! 3. For all the fast eaters out there...Water can help slow down your dog’s chow-time! If you’re dog slurps his kibble down like he’s not sure he’ll ever eat again, try adding some warm water to his food bowl. Dogs who chow too
fast can end up with a condition called ‘bloat’, and can be very serious. Katie and I add warm water to our dog’s meals each and every time! 4. Is your dog a picky eater? Adding some water to your dog’s kibble has a secondary benefit too! By simply moistening your dog’s kibble, it releases flavor and scents from the kibbles themselves. This is especially helpful for ‘picky eaters’, senior dogs, or dogs suffering from illness who have lost taste and dog’s suffering from dental issues. Since a dog’s nose is roughly 40 times more powerful than ours, his eating habits may benefit with some additional aroma coming from his dinner bowl. 5. Is H20 a big No-No for your dog? If your dog doesn’t really enjoy water, there are other options out there. Have you ever tried doggie-broths (void of garlic, onions and sodium) or elixirs? What about super-food smoothies or goats-milk?All good options to bring a bit more moisture to your dog’s diet. We can show you some options at JDP! Thank you all for sharing your dog’s lives with us. You will always have our gratitude. Oncology charge nurse named Ambassador of the Month Submitted by Johnston Health
SMITHFIELD — Stacey Costanzo, the charge nurse at Johnston Health Hematology Oncology, has been named Ambassador of the Month. During a recent presentation, interim CEO Tom Williams said Costanzo has a big heart, and offers love and support to all. “She encourages coworkers to grow and finds a way to recognize them every day. She makes people feel seen and appreciated,” he said. In a nomination for the award, a co-worker wrote of Costanzo’s impact. “I’ve never had the privilege of working with anyone who has a greater level of commitment to the clinic and to those around her,” she said.

The school held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the new cafeteria experience, which focuses on reshaping how students and staff view their school cafeteria. “This is a chance for our students and cafeteria staff to collaborate and form a great, positive culture in the cafeteria,” said West Johnston High Assistant Principal Chris Lattimer. “We want to create an environment where kids don’t just go to the cafeteria to eat. They can go there and have fun with their friends.”

The café will also host open mic lunches. “I’m super excited about this opportunity,” said Brianna Busigo Pellati. “This gives us the chance to express ourselves in front of our classmates, and it may even bring more of us together at lunch.” In preparation for the debut, the committee and staff worked to make the Wildcat Café more inviting on a daily basis. The cafeteria is decorated with artwork, and peppy music plays throughout the space. Inspirational quotes provide food for thought on the serving lines, servers invite customers to try samples and occasionally patrons are invited to participate in games for prizes. “I love what I do. I love to cook, and I love to make it the best it can be. I want our kids to have a place where they can eat, relax and enjoy themselves,” said West

So you want to get your home painted? By Tim Weiss
With lots of painters looking for work, you have many choices. Let’s talk about what’s best and most important to you — the homeowner. Find someone that has a certified and verified business, not just a van with ladders. Just because they are on Facebook does not mean they are reputable. We read so many stories on Facebook, Nextdoor and Alignable of unethical treatment toward the consumer.

Another important issue as many painters can’t qualify if they are not legal residents of the state. Again, it’s an issue if they fall off a big ladder on your property. Fourth annual
Raise the Boot
fundraiser nets more than $
By Randy Capps | Photos courtesy of Partnership for Children of Johnston County
SMITHFIELD — It’s not unusual to see the parking lot at the Country Club of Johnston County full on an early March Saturday night. It’s also fairly commonplace to see those people gathered for a fundraiser in support of one of the many worthy causes in the community. Once inside, however, any notion of the Partnership for Children of Johnston County’s Raise the Booty event being a run-of-the-mill fundraiser vanished quicker than the desserts from the long table on the front wall. There were auctioneers dressed as pirates, a photo area, complete with hats, eye patches and spy glasses, silent auctions and much more energetic live ones near the end of the festivities. “Raise the Booty was fantastic,” 22 | JOHNSTON NOW
Christina Peterson, community engagement and outreach coordinator, said. “It was our highest grossing fundraiser yet. Huge community support and a lot of fun.” The event raised more than $58,000. This includes almost $18,000 that will go toward funding Story Walks for the Partnership for Children Park and other parks around the county. “Our fund the need was extremely powerful,” Peterson said. “We had a lot of support for the Partnership for Children Park, and early literacy is our main focus of that event. All of the money raised from Raise the Booty goes to support literacy efforts in Johnston County. Because the Partnership isn’t funded for that through Smart Start, so we have to raise funds to do that kind of stuff.”
A presentation by Owen Daughtry, author of “Different But Special,” was a big part of that fundraising success. “I had goosebumps, and I had some tears,” Peterson said. “To really know that people are that invested in the work that we do daily just really reinforces why we do what we do here — why I love working for the Partnership. We’re making a difference in families’ lives every single day, and to have Owen come and share his experience and his love for literacy with everybody else, and for people, one after another, to start donating so that other kids in the county can have those experiences as well is very heartwarming. It’s humbling, too, at the same time.” This year’s Raise the Booty was the fourth one, and each has been bigger than the last.
oty
n $58K for Partnership for Children “It’s becoming more well known, for sure,” Peterson said. “And I think people are starting to understand more about what the partnership does throughout the county.” One of the organization’s primary goals is to put children in the best possible position to succeed. “A child’s mind is like a computer or a sponge,” Partnership for Children of Johnston County Executive Director Dwight Morris told Johnston Now in a July 2019 article. “It’s there, ready for input. So, whatever that child gets in the early stage or in the beginning is how it’s going to function. All the software is critical. All the right environments, all the right educational opportunities, critical thinking, learning opportunities — all of those things play into what
kind of computer it’s going to be and how it functions when that child gets to the next stage, to school. Our mission is three-fold: education, health and family.” As it turns out, it was the work of other partnerships that helped spark the idea for this kind of fundraiser. “We got really lucky,” she said. “There are some other partnerships throughout the state who were doing this type of auction event with Michael Parker Benefit Auctions, and that’s what they do. Specifically, fundraising for benefit auctions. ... He really helps us a lot with different ideas for the games, having it be themed — it’s not like any auction you’ve ever been to.” It takes a small army of volunteers and staffers to make an event like this
happen. That includes Dwight Morris, President of the Partnership for Children of Johnston County, cutting quite the swashbuckling figure in his own buccaneer costume. “Dwight loves to be the pirate,” Peterson said. “He loves to get out there. It’s just not his thing to sit back in the office and not be involved.” The Partnership for Children of Johnston County’s mission never stops, and the organization is always on the lookout for volunteers for events like Raise the Booty or for work in the Partnership for Children Park. In addition, monetary donations, or donations of used books, are also welcome. To learn more about the 2019 Johnston Now Honors Nonprofit of the Year, visit www. partnershipforchildrenjoco.org. Longtime Pine Level Town Clerk retires By Keith Barnes Johnstonian News
PINE LEVEL — After almost 40 years in Town Hall, Sharon Thompson has retired as town clerk. Her last day on the job was Jan. 31. Thompson’s fellow employees gathered that day for a luncheon in her honor, and a reception on Feb. 9 drew former town commissioners, town employees, business owners, town clerks from neighboring communities, family members and friends. Recently, the Pine Level Board of Commissioners paid tribute to Thompson by naming the Town Hall conference room in her honor. A plaque will adorn the door to the conference room. “While working with Town of Pine Level, Sharon Thompson has contributed numerous initiatives of great importance to the town with professionalism, integrity
and compassion,” Mayor Jeff Holt said. “We appreciate her service and wish her a healthy and fulfilling retirement.” Thompson, 66, began as a part-time employee in the town clerk’s office in 1981. She was named deputy clerk in 1983 and town clerk in 1985. Thompson said she will most miss the people of Pine Level. “We have some really good folks here, and we also have also had our share of characters,” she said. “I love Pine Level, and I have been blessed to have been able to work here. Like the motto says, it’s the ‘Best Little Town in North Carolina.’” “I appreciate the friendship and the help of all the fine people I have worked with,” Thompson said. “In a job like this, it’s not a matter of one person but a matter of everyone working together.”

Sharon Thompson is shown with Mayor Jeff Holt after Holt read a resolution naming the Town Hall conference room in Thompson’s honor.
Thompson said she had no definite plans in retirement, though she might clean out some closets. “I plan to just take everything one day at a time,” she said. Thompson and her husband, Bobby, have two sons, Jon Thompson and Brad Thompson and five grandchildren.

Smithfield-Selma advances to 2020 National ProStart Invitational Submitted by Smithfield-Selma High School
Is it time to hire a photo organizer?
Submitted by Elizabeth Stewart
RALEIGH — The North Carolina Restaurant & Lodging Association (NCRLA), the voice of North Carolina’s $23 billion restaurant, foodservice and lodging industry, recently announced that Smithfield-Selma High School and West Rowan High School secured first place finishes in the 2020 North Carolina ProStart Invitational (NCPI) presented by Golden Corral. NCPI is a high-stakes culinary arts and restaurant management competition organized by the association’s philanthropic arm, the North Carolina Hospitality Education Foundation (NCHEF). The 2020 NCPI took place Feb. 21, at Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte. High school students from across North Carolina put their skills to the test in front of industry leaders, family and friends with the hopes to earn more than $730,000 in scholarships — awarded to first, second and third place teams — to top culinary schools across the country. More than 80 ProStart students, made up of 14 teams from across the state, demonstrated their mastery of skills in the fast-paced, high level competition. Smithfield-Selma High School and

West Rowan High School advance to the prestigious National ProStart Invitational in Washington, D.C., in May. “The hospitality industry is thriving in North Carolina, and the demand for talent has never been greater. We are proud to be a part of the ProStart program that successfully prepares future leaders for fulfilling careers in the hospitality industry,” said Lynn Minges, president and CEO of NCRLA and NCHEF. “These students have demonstrated great skill and poise during the competition. There is no doubt that they will make us proud as they advance to the National ProStart Invitational this May.” The culinary competition highlights each team’s creative abilities through the preparation of a three-course meal in 60 minutes, using only two butane burners, and without access to running water or electricity. The culinary teams are evaluated on taste, skill, teamwork, safety and sanitation. The management competition requires teams to develop a proposal for a restaurant concept and present it to the panel of industry judges. Students must communicate their entrepreneurial ideas clearly and use their problem-solving skills to solve challenges faced by often faced by restaurant managers. The ProStart program is utilized in more than 1,700 high schools in 50 states, Guam and on U.S. military bases and reaches nearly 120,000 secondary students annually. Many post-secondary schools in the nation recognize ProStart’s Certificate of Achievement, which is awarded to students who complete both levels of the program and at least 400 hours of work experience, and reward them with scholarships and credits.
Do you find yourself overwhelmed with digital or paper photos? Do you have a backup plan for your photos, videos and children’s artwork? Have you transferred your photos from your smartphone and backed them up onto your computer or to the cloud? Have you inherited boxes of family photos, slides, videos, albums, movie reels, CDs or DVDs and do not know how to preserve and share them with family members? Organizing boxes, bins and albums full of pictures can be daunting. Just like saying, “I am going to get organized,” saying, “I am going to organize my photos” often causes people to get so overwhelmed that they stop before they even begin. The longer you wait to organize and preserve your photos, the more at risk they are. Most of your pictures are one of a kind and it would be terrible to lose them. These are the physical manifestations of your memories. If you find yourself answering yes to any of the above questions, then a photo organizer can help you. What is a photo organizer? A photo organizer is someone who offers extensive photo organization, editing and management services. They can help you organize and preserve your photos so that you can share all those family memories. Elizabeth Stewart is a Certified Personal Photo Organizer for VandenBroucke Imaging. The first months of World War II in Johnston County By Benjamin Sanderford
It was January 1942, one month after Johnston County folks found themselves plunged into the Second World War. The news coming out of Hawaii was comforting. Smithfield natives Sgt. W. Garland Stephenson, U.S. Army, and J.D. Lancaster, U.S. Navy, were both reported safe. So too was Navy electrician Willard Zadock Holland of Kenly, who had been declared dead following the Japanese raid on Pearl Harbor. The news from abroad, however, was mixed. The Soviet Red Army had thwarted the German attempt to take Moscow, but it was hobbled in exploiting its victory by the incompetence of the Russian dictator, Joseph Stalin. Closer to home, German submarines were wreaking havoc on American shipping
in an effort to cut the United States off from Britain. Meanwhile, Japanese forces were driving British-led troops down the Malay Peninsula, threatening the vital port of Singapore. The Japanese had also landed an army in the U.S.-administered Philippines. Thousands of Americans were now in harm’s way. This gave the belt-tightening at home a sense of urgency. The Office of Price Administration imposed a rationing regime to ensure that all nonessential resources were available for military use. Johnston County was allotted a total 118 tires for all types of vehicles for the month of January. Early February saw the rationing of sugar to one pound per person per week while the Victory Garden campaign encouraged farmers to grow more food crops. All these measures entailed sacrifices from
Johnston County people, but they were willing to make them. The Junior Class of Benson High School voted on February 12 to forego the school’s annual Junior/

Senior Banquet and contribute all available personal funds to buying defense bonds. Princeton students, for their part, launched a “Victory Campaign” to collect waste materials, particularly tires to meet the military’s rubber shortage. The first week of March passed quietly, but that was shattered on March 7 when a munitions truck exploded at the Selma entertainment complex of Catch-Me-Eye. The blast killed seven people, destroyed nearby buildings and made a fireball that could be seen from Raleigh. In the panic of the moment, many believed that the Japanese were attacking. Across the Pacific, Japan was about to launch real attacks that would bring the war home to Johnston. The fall of Rangoon, British Burma, to the Imperial Japanese Army caused anxiety for the family of Joseph N. Peedin, who had been stationed there with the “Flying Tigers.” Fortunately, his mother in Smithfield received a cable from him on March 13 assuring her that he had been safely evacuated to Kunming, China. Maj. Edwin Broadhurst of the U.S. Army Air Force also had to leave his base that same month. The Smithfield airman boarded the last plane to leave the Dutch colony of Java, in modern Indonesia, before Japanese troops conquered the island. Broadhurst landed in Australia without incident, no doubt hoping that this country, America’s chief partner in the Pacific, would not be the next to fall. Others were not so lucky. The
Navy Department reported on March 16 that Charles William Sullivan of Selma was missing in action. By May 1, word reached Smithfield lawyer J.R. Barbour that his sailor son, Stewart Gordon Barbour, was a prisoner of Japan. Bad news came on swift wings that spring. April 9 witnessed the surrender of 15,000 American and 60,000 Filipino soldiers on the Bataan Peninsula, most of whom were then forced to endure the Bataan Death March. It was the largest military capitulation in American history, and it was not the only calamity to befall
the Allies. The loss of Singapore on Feb. 15 resulted in nearly 85,000 British, Australian and Indian troops being led into Japanese captivity. Allied forces had been completely expelled from Burma by the end of May, driving a wedge between India and China. Simultaneously, in eastern Ukraine, Stalin ordered an ill-advised attack on strong German forces that cost the Russians 280,000 casualties. There were now scant Soviet forces to block Germany’s drive to the Caucasus Mountains.
These disasters illustrated the need for more men to join the armed forces, a need that Johnstonians were ready to fill. The draft boards of Smithfield and Selma sent 93 men to Fort Bragg on March 30 alone. These unmarried men were joined in April by husbands whose wives were in the workforce. All of Johnston’s people, married and single, male and female, black and white, soldier and civilian, would be needed to turn the tide of war. Benjamin Sanderford, a resident of Clayton, studied social science at UNC Greensboro. He can be reached at benwsanderford@gmail.com.
