Publisher column: Living in the not-so-corporate world

By Randy Capps

It would have been easy to find a stock photo of a baby for the cover of this magazine. As luck would have it, however, we didn’t have to leave the office to find our cover model.

You see, Brentley is the office baby. Well, technically he belongs to Kayla, but the rest of us claim him, too. He hangs out with us a few mornings each week to help offset the cost of childcare.

At least that’s how we sold it to Kayla. The truth is that Shanna and I like having a baby in the office. Sure, it doesn’t do much for our productivity — and the floor around Shanna’s desk looks more like a nursery than a marketing agency.

But we don’t mind. The one thing that we never try to lose sight of here at the good ship JNOW is the fact that we very much want to be a company for which we would like to work. So that’s why, on a brisk November morning, Shanna and I were roaming the aisles at Belk and Bealls looking for Brentley outfits instead of putting out this magazine or fixing someone’s Google page. Side note: Why are there so many more cute girls' clothes than boys’? We finally found a couple, plus a bonus

Thanksgiving ensemble, and set out to execute our cover shoot plan. Of course, his feeding and nap schedule, not to mention his mood, dictated a few changes to that operation.

It was fun and a tad hectic, which served as a nice change of pace from our day-today grind.

It turned out to be pretty cute, too.

Happy Holidays everyone!
