IRA SIMON COLLECTOR OF TIFFANY, ART NOUVEAU AND ARTS AND CRAFTS Ira Simon had a passion for collecting the works of Louis Tiffany, Art Nouveau, handcrafted silver, pewter and copper...and bats! He began building his vast collection in the early 1970's and through the 1980's with acquisitions from sources in the Midwest...Fly By Nite Antiques, American Art Galleries, Hanzel Art Galleries, Direct Auctioneers...and antique dealers out East...Lillian Nassau Ltd., Macklowe Gallery, ARC Antiques. One of his mentors was Lillian Nassau Ltd. of New York City. In the 1970's she was actively promoting Tiffany lamps and wares and Art Nouveau objects. Ira Simon saw the beauty, significance and fine craftsmanship in these objects that had fallen out of favor during the middle of the century. He began to acquire pieces through her shop and other sources. Ira studied art and design at Washington University. He then found employment as a graphic designer with a major toy manufacturer. This was his day job. His true passion was his love of art and collecting hand crafted works, especially those created by Louis Tiffany. He attended antique shows and auctions, frequented local antique shops and visited better antique dealers when in New York, slowly building his impressive collection of Tiffany, Art Nouveau, Kalo sterling silver, Georg Jensen sterling silver, Robert Jarvie copper wares, Kayserzinn pewter wares and Carence Crafters objects and jewelry. He also decorated the walls of his home with many paintings and prints in a variety of styles and subjects along with bronzes, Japanese baskets and many outstanding examples of Galle Art Nouveau furniture, adding to the museum feel of his surroundings. Ira became an expert on the works of Louis Tiffany especially lamps, candlesticks and inkwells and was the proud owner of a fabulous one-of-a-kind Tiffany mirror. Anyone who was fortunate enough to see in person the many fine pieces in his vast collection were awed by the scope and quality of the works he had single-handedly assembled. And of course there was his fascination with bats. Ira had a hanging bat lamp, a Tiffany lamp with a base of bats, a bat letter opener, bat prints and other bat items. Besides his mission to collect the best of Louis Tiffany, Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts Ira loved gardening and raising orchids, Broadway musicals, architecture, fine dining and all things Chicago. Ira remained a bachelor and his cats were his family. His intense appreciation of the design and beauty of fine hand crafted items, especially those whose design was based on the beauties of nature, stayed with him throughout his life. Later he would step away from graphic design to focus more on buying and selling antiques and preparing appraisals for large auction houses and individuals. Few collectors have been fortunate enough to amass a collection with the breadth and scope achieved by Ira Simon. His keen eye, knowledge, passion and appreciation of fine design and quality workmanship made him unique in the world of fine antiques collecting. - Jim and Nancy Frugoli

Catalog Note: The Rowfant Club was founded in 1892 as a private bibliophilic society for the prominent men of Cleveland, Ohio. Known for its unique traditions, members were instructed to bring a candlestick from home and use it to reserve their place at the club’s weekly dinners. By 1901, the Rowfant Club had amassed an impressive collection of mismatched candlesticks, which fueled their desire for a custom candlestick.

Literature: Duncan, Alastair, Tiffany Lamps and Metalware, Antique Collectors Club Art Books, 2019, p. 417

The club held their annual meeting every February 2, on Candlemas, to honor their respect for candlelight and printed books. This is also coincidentally Groundhog Day, and this serendipitous coincidence inspired them to begin calling themselves “The Gopher Club”. Munson Aldrich Havens, a club member, wrote a commission request to the wildlife artist and author, Ernest Thompson Seton, for a candlestick holder that included the primary symbols of the club — the book, the candle and the groundhog. After many revisions, the final design was modeled by James Lippit Clark and produced as an edition of 100 by Tiffany Studios for the club’s 10-year anniversary.

He was born into a family of jewelers, apprenticing under his father, before taking over the his family’s business in 1892. His workshop produced a variety of items, from vases, hair combs, pins and pendants to more traditional jewelry. Gaillard was immensely interested in Japanese artwork. He was often inspired by animals, florals and insects. Creatures commonly used in his designs were bees, butterflies, dragonflies and snakes. Gaillard would only use one motif for each item he designed. Through the encouragement of his friend René Lalique, Gaillard refocused his attention on creating jewelry around the turn of the 20th century. Like Lalique, Gaillard would incorporate unusual materials into his designs, such as horn or ivory, and combine them with gold and precious stones.

His early training mainly focused on sculpting using stones and metals. Sandoz is credited with saying, "On prend une pierre, on devine l'animal qui est dedans et l'on enleve ce qu'il y a de trop (We take a stone, we guess the animal that is inside and we remove what is too much)." Initially influenced by the Art Nouveau movement in the early 1900s, his style evolved over time and stayed current with various artistic movements that occurred through the century, such as Art Deco and Cubism. His designs are based on his creative yet affectionate interpretation of his subject matter, whether that is a rabbit, dog, monkey, snake or mouse. (another example illustrated as Stretching Tiger) Gorham Company, Famous Small Bronzes, exhibition catalog, 1928, pp. 14-15 (another example illustrated) Catalog Note: Anna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington was an American sculptor from Cambridge, Massachusetts whose works largely included animal sculptures. Having a professor of zoology at Harvard as her father sparked her interest in animals at a young age. Following in the footsteps of her sister, who was also a sculptor, Huntington received formal training as an artist at the Art Students League of New York. She also spent a considerable amount of time at the local zoos in New York and circuses observing animals. Huntington's diligence combined with technical proficiency allowed her to become one of the most accomplished and internationally recognized female sculptors of her generation. She created numerous impressive figural sculptures, usually presented in a state of suspended animation with ample movement and a great attention to details that breathed life into them. Preferred subjects for Huntington include jaguars, tigers, lions, bears, elephants, horses, bulls and dogs. The Yawning / Stretching Tiger is one of her most widely recognized works, with 359 known variations cast by Gorham Mfg. Co. between 1917 and 1948. Though small in scale, the bronze sculpture looks very much alive in its facial expression and exudes energy throughout its slender yet strong body. A similar sculpture may be found in the collection of National Museum of Women in the Arts (cast circa 1917) in Washington, DC. A larger-scale example of this form may be found in the collections of the National Gallery of Art (cast circa 1917) in Washington, DC and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City (cast circa 1920).

This sculpture depicts a man chiseling himself out of a stone. Polasek sculpted 53 different variations of this sculpture throughout his lifetime. The various recreations depict differences in the position of the figure's arm and how much of his body has emerged from the stone. Ruth Sherwood, Albin's first wife, spoke on the conception of this sculpture, noting that: "all at once the idea took concrete form before his mind's eye: Man, blindly hewing his way out of darkness, carving his own destiny! Polasek could hardly wait to get home to start his composition. Man, chiseling himself, struggling to hack out his own character, carving his future by the effort of his will — it was part of his life, just what he himself had done, and into this composition he threw his whole soul, expressing himself more fully than he had ever done before." At the age of 37, Polasek was invited to be the head of the sculpture department at the Art Institute of Chicago, where he remained for nearly 30 years. During his tenure there, he created some of his most notable works that remain installed around Illinois. Like many other sculptors of his time, he also created several cemetery memorials. Notable examples, such as The Pilgrim and The Mother, reside in Bohemian National Cemetery in Chicago.

His early career works consisted of landscapes and still lifes, but Roseland was interested in paintings that told a story. He was well known for his depictions of common laborers in the fields of New York and New England. In post-Civil War America, his paintings portrayed former slaves, and their everyday lives. Interestingly enough, Roseland never visited the South, but his paintings were viewed as authentic studies of Black life in the South, with intimately rendered subjects. TERMS & CONDITIONS THE AUCTION The auction is open to the public and there is no admission/sign-up fee or obligation to bid. The auctioneer introduces the objects for sale — known as “lots” — in numerical order as listed in the catalog. John Toomey Gallery, Inc., d/b/a Toomey & Co. Auctioneers (“Toomey & Co. Auctioneers”) acts as agent on behalf of the seller. The seller may not bid on his or her own property. ESTIMATES / RESERVES The price estimates that appear at the end of each lot description are approximations of the range in which the price may fall. Some items are subject to a reserve, the price below which an item cannot be sold. The reserve usually is less than the low estimate. BIDDING IN PERSON If you would like to bid in person, you must register for a “paddle” upon arriving at the auction. The paddle is numbered in order to identify you to the auctioneer. To register, the following will be required: (i) a form of photo identification, such as a driver’s license, passport, or government-issued identification; and (ii) your address, telephone number, and email address. If you are bidding for another person or entity, you will be required to provide authorization from that person or entity in order to bid on their behalf. Issuance of a bid paddle is in the auction house’s sole discretion. Invoices for all lots sold will be sent to the name and address in which the paddle is registered. TELEPHONE BIDS, ABSENTEE BIDS, AND INTERNET BIDS If you are not able to attend the auction in person, you may bid over the telephone during the sale, leave bids (“absentee bids”), which will be executed for you by one of our representatives, making every effort to purchase the item for the lowest possible price without exceeding your limit, or bid via the Internet (see our website for instructions on how to bid at our auction via the Internet). PLEASE NOTE: Toomey & Co. Auctioneers offers the absentee bid service as a convenience to its clients who are unable to attend the auction and is not responsible for error or failure to execute bids. Should you wish to participate by telephone or by leaving absentee bids, you must complete and submit an Absentee/Telephone Bid Form, which is included in the catalog and also is available on the Toomey & Co. Auctioneers website and at the auction house, or you may contact us as indicated below. TELEPHONE BIDDING Please make arrangements for telephone bidding as early as possible, as there are a limited number of telephone lines available. Please make arrangements for telephone bidding no later than 5:00 p.m. (CT) on the day prior to a sale. Please note that telephone bidding is generally reserved for items estimated at greater than $500. ABSENTEE BIDDING Please submit absentee bids as early as possible. It is important that these bids are provided in the correct increments (see chart below). Should identical absentee bids be submitted, the first bid received will be honored. Absentee bidders have the same chance of being successful as a telephone or in-person bidder; the successful bidder is determined at the auctioneer’s discretion. It is important that absentee bids be submitted prior to 5:00 p.m. (CT) on the day prior to a sale, as execution cannot be guaranteed after that time. Please call us if you wish to confirm that your bids have been received. AUCTION INCREMENTS The increments indicated in the chart below are used at our auctions: Bid Range Increment Bid Range $0-500 $25 $3,000-5,000 $500-1,000 $50 $5,000-10,000 $1,000-3,000 $100 $10,000-30,000
