Using Office 2010 on the Go. The most straightforward way to use Office 2010 is to load it on a desktop or laptop computer and then use it whenever you’re sitting in front of that computer. However, Office 2010 is no longer tied to just your home or work computer. Learn to take your office with you anywhere you want with the following tips from Office 2010 For Dummies author Wallace Wang.
Social Networking Connections Office now has its own Facebook Page so you can keep up with the latest updates and news about Office 2010. Microsoft also offers a free Outlook Social Connector that allows you to access social networks like LinkedIn, MySpace, and Facebook directly from Outlook. Now if someone changes their contact information on one of these social networks, you can automatically update that information in Outlook without retyping the information again. Plus you’ll be able to update your own social network account directly through Outlook so other people will have your most current contact information at all times.
Office 2010 Web Apps If you create a document in Office on your computer, you need to take your computer and document with you if you want to edit it later. For a much simpler solution, use Microsoft’s Office Web Access, which lets you store your documents online, access and edit them from any computer (including Linux and Macintosh computers) anywhere in the world through an Internet connection. Now you’ll be able to travel for business or leisure and still have access to your important Office documents that you may need to share with others.
Office 2010 Web Apps are great collaboration tools, too. You can collaborate on a single document with multiple people around the world. With everyone adding their edits to a single document, you’ll save time compiling and editing multiple documents from multiple users later on in the process.
Mobile Phone Computing Get a mobile phone running the latest Windows Phone 7 operating system, and you’ll be able to view and edit all of your Office documents through the convenience of your mobile phone. Combine Windows Phone 7 with Office Web Apps and that means you could create a document on your computer, store it online using Office Web Apps, then view and edit that document on your Windows Phone 7 mobile phone, giving you complete access to your important Office documents wherever you go in the world (as long as you have an Internet or cellular telephone connection, that is).
Using Office 2010 on the iPad Apple’s iPad is popular due to its small size, light weight, and portability. Although Office 2010 doesn’t run on the iPad, you can still load and edit Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files on an iPad if you purchase Apple’s iWork for iPad apps. Each iWork app—Pages, Numbers, and Keynote—costs $9.99.
