Introduction It’s easy to get bogged down in the responsibilities, to-do lists, and schedules of everyday life. We’re often so busy that we miss the little spiritual lessons that we encounter day to day. Many of those lessons are modeled through our beloved pets, whom we often consider to be among our best friends and family members—our favorite feline companions. Take time from your busy schedule to learn some valuable lessons from a cat’s life. This planner is a good way to start. Use it to assist in the organization of the daily grind, and allow the readings and scripture to inspire your heart all 365 days of 2015.

November 2014
Guarded by Attack Cats Saturday evening the two cats and I were in the living room watching TV. George, my American shorthair, dozed on the sofa. Chloé, my petite Abyssinian, lay in my lap, cleaning her face with one paw. I was relaxing after a day of hard work unpacking boxes in our new home. With no advance notice, both cats sat up and looked toward the other end of the house. They jumped down and took off down the hall in full hunt mode, running with bellies low to the floor. This was strange behavior for two house cats who never went outside, never hunted anything larger than a fly. Quietly I followed them into the darkened bedroom to discover the reason for their actions. When I entered the room, I saw them both sitting on their haunches—side by side—looking at the windows in the wall facing the alley. Through the partially closed blinds, I could see a man walking down the alley, where he had no reason being. I quickly dialed 911 and told the operator that someone was trying to break into my house. We exchanged the necessary information, and she alerted the police to my emergency. To this day, I do not know what prompted her next question. She said, “Ma’am, are you scared?” Rather indignantly, I answered, “Well, of course I’m scared! I’m alone in the house, and my only means of protection are this phone and two house cats.” I could not be sure, but I thought I heard a sputter of laughter. The truth was that I was scared, but not panicked. I knew that God was protecting me. My confidence in Him must have revealed itself in the way I was speaking. While all this was taking place, my faithful guard cats continued sitting between the man moving around in the alley and me. They followed the man’s progress by moving their heads in unison, always facing exactly where he stood.
Just as suddenly as it had started, it was all over. George and ChloĂŠ calmly got up and headed back to the living room. They knew the man had left, so I no longer needed them to protect me. Less than five minutes later, the police arrived and verified that the prowler was gone. It may seem a little strange that my pets would act more like guard dogs than house cats. However, cats acting out of character to protect me are no stranger than ravens feeding a prophet. We may not always see the angels God provides for our protection, but on that Saturday night, my angels had furry feet and a purr.

Wisdom for Cat Lovers When I was a small girl, I had a cat named April. April had a litter box, litter, food dishes, food, and water. Now I realize how deprived she was! Today’s felines have condos, trees, towers, hammocks, cradles, playhouses, and tunnels. Some even have cat-sized sofas, chairs, and beds. Yet April loved me well, even in her poverty. Unknown

December 2014
David and Goliath My best friend from childhood had a little black cat named Woosie. We had some good times with that cat. She was a bundle of energy, playful, loving, and above all, a huntress—not some scaredy-cat, as her name would suggest! Woosie haunted the woods surrounding our neighborhood. This was her territory, and she guarded it with extreme vigilance. It was common to see her chasing birds, rabbits, field mice, and occasionally a stray cat. Nothing intimidated her—absolutely nothing. I recall a particular day—all the kids were outside playing, taking advantage of the last warm days of autumn. Our riveting game of tag was halted abruptly by the appearance of a massive, 250-pound Saint Bernard. He was the classic medicine dog: dense coat of red and white fur, black face and ears, shaggy neck and legs, huge head, and large paws. His tail was long and heavy, hanging low with the end turned up. He even had a thick leather collar with a brandy barrel attached at his throat. We scattered, screaming, our game forgotten. The mammoth canine was unfazed by our clamor and began exploring his new domain. He ambled along, smelling bushes, mailboxes, and the flagpole, marking each along the way. We climbed into trees and crowded into whatever shelters we could find so he could not get us. Then Woosie came to our rescue. She came flying out of the woods—ears flattened, eyes flashing, howling like a banshee—and charged straight at the Saint Bernard. We watched as our little Woosie launched herself through the air, claws extended, straight at the dog’s face. He let out a startled yelp and jerked his head back, eyes showing white, and hightailed it out of there! It was a sight to see the Saint Bernard’s lumbering gait as he whirled and hastily retreated. Excited, we scrambled out of our hiding places and gathered around our little
hero, cheering and stroking her fur. Woosie just pointed her nose in the air, tail waving, and walked calmly away, as if to say, “Did you doubt me?” David faced Goliath in much the same way. The armies of Israel cowered before the Philistine champion and scattered when Goliath made his daily appearance to taunt them. David was small, but he was not intimidated by the giant’s colossal frame or his threats. He wholeheartedly believed that God was big enough; that He would strengthen him for the battle—and that He would deliver Goliath to him, just as He had the bear and lion while David tended his father’s sheep. We can have the same confidence that both Woosie and David had as we face the giants in our lives. Satan tries to intimidate, wear us out, and make us think that we are outclassed. But we have a God who always roots for, and supports, the undercat!
Goals for This Month:
[David said,] The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee. 1 Samuel 17:37 kjv
