In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1

It’s hard to imagine that before God created everything there was nothing. The Bible tells us that the earth was an empty waste and that darkness was over the deep waters. But God was present, and He had a most wonderful plan for creation!

day

On the FIRST day of creation, God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, so He separated the light from the darkness. He called the light “day” and the darkness “night.”

night

On the SECOND day of creation, God separated the waters above from the waters below and called the open space “sky.”

On the THIRD day of creation, God made the land and separated it from the seas. From tall mountains, to green meadows and rolling hills, God made our beautiful earth. Then God filled the land with plants and trees that would grow fruit.

On the FOURTH day, God made the sun, moon, and stars. He made so many stars that we can’t count them all!

On the FIFTH day of creation, God made all of the creatures that live in the ocean, like the huge whale and the brightly colored fish. God still had more work to do, so He made all of the birds that fly in the sky.

On the SIXTH day of creation, God made the animals. He made tall giraffes and beautiful peacocks, tiny mice and curious squirrels. Frogs hopped, lions roared, hippos rested, and monkeys played. All animals, big and small, God made each and every one.

On the SIXTH day, God still had more work to do. He said, “Let us make mankind in our image to rule over the fish of the sea and birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the wild animals and creatures that move along the ground.

So God created the first man and named him Adam. Then God created the first woman and named her Eve. God blessed them.

The heavens and the earth were complete, and God saw that everything He made was good. So on the SEVENTH day, God rested. He made the seventh day holy and blessed it because of the great work He had done. God doesn’t need to rest. He chose to rest because all of His work was done. The word “rest” means to stop activity or to stop working. In the Bible, the word “rest” means even more! In Matthew 11:28 Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” To “rest” in Jesus means to have peace. When we rest in God’s love, we trust that He will take care of us.
