Main Storage Center for Gyeongju National Museum of Korea Jo Jinman Architects
Gyeongju was the capital of the Shilla Kingdom for over 1,000 years since BC1. Thousands of historic buildings and objects have been maintained well throughout the city, making it the "museum without walls. UNESCO added Gyeongju's historic areas to its World Heritage Sites in 2000. Gyeongju National Museum is located right in the midst of such UNESCO designated, part of the royal palace site of Silla Kingdom. For that reason the entire museum surroundings are archaeological site which still excavation work is undergoing. The site of new storage center is south part of existing museum with panoramic agricultural landscape in near view and surrounded by screening mountains in distant view.

Initial hypothesis for the Gyeongju national museum enlarged almost its twice size by having new storage center, as threshold of historical city Gyengju, a capital city of a thousand years; 1.How storage center, the most closed part of museum could simultaneously perform as the new main gate, the most opened part of museum without having any functional discrepancy? 2. How to create an open autonomous field that one can experience its abundant memories and cultural landscapes not only by limited museum building entity but with whole site as open air museum? 3.How a new type of exhibition system can be organized in a such condition that is possible for visitor to appreciate and experience entire process of archeological museum from excavation, handling to storage as comprehensive way? 4.Regarding prescribed use of traditional Korean architecture roof style, what would be creative realization of tradition in architecture not just through superficial copy of its style but achievable through reinterpretation of spatial potential in terms of given program’s characteristic and its creative deformation?

Site Reading and Master Plan Site is located on the junction where south-north historical axis meets east-west urban axis. New storage center is located on south of site facing local highway in order to maximize frontage of museum to the city. Widened existing road on east side provide main access and service traffic to the site. Main street intersect south-north and various promenades links all elements in autonomous way surrounded by beautiful landscape.

Program mix 66% of GFA is dedicated to the storage rooms and rest is service facilities to support it. Separately, they had another plan to make city welcome center, pavilion for the Bell of King Seongdeok and other amenity facilities in next phase on the same site. Based on careful analysis of given brief, the proposal is a integrated system which combining those different phase of construction, utilizing fully opened free piloti space by putting entire storage rooms into the traditional style roof. Obviously it’s more efficient and economical way not only for the multiple use of space but also for construction and sustainability reason as well.

By lifting up all the storage rooms into roof space, ground level can be completely opened up to the public as museum’s new main gate. From performance point of view, what is better is that the storage detached from ground level is safer in terms of humidity from ground, flood from adjacent creek, bush fire from surroundings and risk of burglary. Also it is creative reinterpretation of traditional Korean architecture which enables multiple use of land, minimizing earthwork while preserving original landform that is key point of this competition.

On upper floor, roof space, each storage rooms are clearly arranged by central corridor without any collision of circulations, organized super efficiently in term of storage and maintenance process. Inside of storage room, the environment is optimized for each relics condition with double wall structure which has buffer temperature zone in between with additionally equipped constant temperature and humidity control. Also structural storage rack in each rooms allows mezzanine level extension when it needed in future. Those linear configuration can be easily extended by built another linear one on north without harming its spatial configuration.

Fully opened free space under the storage rooms as new main gate of extended museum, makes introduction to the museum through visible storage and open air exhibition space around inner courtyard. With this configuration of mixed open and semi open space are carefully designed with equipped space both at floor and ceiling accommodates various cultural, artistic, educational events and that is new type of communication between the city and museum.
The inner courtyard, as covert gap completely hidden from outside, linear condensed space is full of light with futuristic materials. This space is new integrated type of exhibition space called hands-on exhibition where visitor can experience entire process and system of archaeological museum from excavation of ruins, handling of relics to visible storage and field trip to main storage as well.

Viewing deck where visitor can enjoy 270Ëš panorama view which links all surrounding important archeological sites with astonishing agricultural scenery is also accessible from a lift at the courtyard. Pavilion of the historical bell is located end of courtyard which makes final stroke of those new introduction spaces and makes synthetic extension of entire museum as new threshold of historical city.
