INTERVIEW //NAME: LUANA CALABRO //CAMEREA: CANON EOS 5D //COUNRTY/CITY: ITALY/MILANO
stylist: ALICE GAZZANIGA & IRENE ROMORINI makeup & hairstyle: ORIANA CURTI model: ANDREA Elite model Milan
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU START WITH PHOTOGRAPHY? I started photography when I was studying at the school of arts and it was love at first sight. I never missed a single practical class of printing and development. It was then that I realized that I felt comfortable behind my camera and that I liked experimenting far more than studying theory. DO YOU HAVE MANY PHOTOGRAPHY JOBS, OR DO YOU HAVE MORE FREE WORK? I do work for customers but in general I prefer free work, that’s what really I like and while doing that I can follow my passion for hundred percent. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO MOST? The kind of photography I like most and that really represents my personality is fashion photography. This puts my two great passions together. I like to tell stories and the characters always have the look that perfectly fits the atmosphere I am looking for. DO YOU SHOOT DIGITAL OR ANALOG? I don’t shoot analog anymore, I left it long ago for digital photography: it is more practical, less expensive and meets my desire of technological innovation. Nevertheless I really believe that a great photographer is one who gets the perfect picture with a single shot. WHAT DO YOU PREFER, SHOOTING IN A STUDIO OR OUTSIDE? I definitely prefer shooting outside: the location and the natural light stimulates my creativity and matches more closely with my personal style. My goal, in fact, is to create a situation that is as close to reality as possible. DO YOU DO A LOT OF EDITING ON YOUR PHOTO’S? I edit my pictures myself. I like to play with colors and hues but I rarely modify the physical aspect of the models. When I shoot I create a feeling with my models and modifying their appearance would mean changing the meaning of the photo I took. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM? I browse through tons of magazines every day and I visit my favorites photographer’s websites. Even a simple commercial may give me inspiration. WHEN ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH A PICTURE, AND WHEN ARE YOU NOT SATISFIED? I’m satisfied with a photograph when looking at it after a while still gives me the idea and feeling I had in mind when I took it. This means that when one of my pictures looks empty I’m not satisfied with my work. WHAT IS YOUR BEST PICTURE IN YOUR OPINION? I do not have a single favorite picture. There are shootings I especially care for, for different reasons. For example I really love the shooting I did in Rio de Janeiro: the atmosphere, the warmth and the place were especially moving. Of course organizing a shooting abroad is more complicated than doing it here in Italy.
WHAT MAKES A PICTURE GOOD IN YOUR OPINION? I can’t tell when a photograph is a good one, it is too subjective. For me it is a matter of harmony, the presence of an underlying theme and perfect fit of different aspects. Everything must merge together, and that’s why I think it’s crucial to work with a team that shares a common vision with me. WHAT DO YOU DISLIKE ABOUT THE WORLD OF PHOTOGRAPHY? What I dislike of the world of photography are those that are not moved by a genuine passion, those who are always showing off and try to be everywhere just to be seen. Personally, when I’m shooting, I don’t like those in the team who tell me how to take a picture. I never interfere with decisions that out of my competence and I just want the others to do the same with me. DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A GOOD PHOTOGRAPHER? I see myself as a photographer always trying to do what she likes. Compared with other photographers I do not feel good or better, I am only satisfied of the results I have obtained and I think that the way to go is still long. I’m always asking myself how to grow and get better, and not only with respect to the final result, but also in the way a manage a project from the idea, to the shooting and to the finally to the editing. WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO WORK WITH IN THE FUTURE? I’d like to work fulltime for Italian and international fashion magazines. I’d like to have the chance to show my skills, but this is much easier when you have a budget for shooting. WHAT ARE YOUR STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES? My strength and weakness at the same time is that I never feel completely satisfied with my work. Feeling fully satisfied would mean having no urge for improvement. On the other hand feeling unsatisfied sometimes makes me loose objectiveness. DO YOU WANT TO CONTINUE TAKING PICTURES FOREVER? I don’t know, forever is a strong word. I don’t know what the future will bring to me, but for sure I won’t quit without fighting for it. HOW SHOULD THE PERFECT MODEL LOOK LIKE? The perfect model must be capable of entering into the story and interpreting the role with an expression and with the movement of her body.

COMFORT ZONE The “comfort zone” is a new initiative of FART. We will continue to cover different topics, but we also want to make sure people that find it hard to stay within one topic will have an opportunity to contribute to FART. At all times we want to be accessible to as many creative minds as possible. That is why we decided to have two divisions in the magazine. The first half will cover all the interpretations of the set topic of our creative minds. The second half, “the comfort zone” will be a platform for any other great contribution. To keep up the quality, and also to give enough space to the thematic part, there will be a limit to those contributions though. There is no concrete numbers set for this; we just feel that the proportion needs to be kept. If we have ten series covering the theme part, we will for example include six in the comfort zone. Again all contributions, topic or “comfort zone” related can be sent to info@fartmagazine.nl. In most cases we will react to it within 24 hours, and tell you if it is suitable for the magazine or not. If we don’t find it matching we will offer a detailed explanation for it. In any case we will handle all sent material respectful and with care. On the website you can find all the contribution regulations. Hopefully we can find your contribution in our mailbox soon!
INTERVIEW //NAME: LUCA PATRONE //COUNRTY/CITY: ITALY/MILANO //WEBSITE: www.luca.patrone.name
WHEN AND WHY DID YOU START WITH PHOTOGRAPHY? I started as a professional photographer seven years ago. DO YOU HAVE MANY JOBS, OR DO YOU WORK MORE FOR YOURSELF? It depends on the period of the year. From March until July I have no time for conducting test shoots. I usually leave the entire month of August free for developing my portfolio. All other months it is about 70% work, and 30% personal research into the craft. WHAT DO YOU LIKE DOING THE MOST? Fashion campaigns where I have the complete assignment: from developing the concept to selecting the final image. WHY DO YOU SHOOT ANALOG? When the client asks for something “old flavor”, or simply more sophisticated images, I shoot in film. DO YOU PREFER SHOOTING IN A STUDIO OR OUTSIDE? Outside. DO YOU DO A LOT OF EDITING ON YOUR IMAGES? Not so much on my own, no. Much editing is outsourced to a postproduction studio. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION? From life, movies, people, and facts. WHEN ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH A PICTURE, AND WHEN NOT? I am satisfied when the image communicates what I had in my mind shooting it. WHAT IS YOUR BEST PICTURE IN YOUR OPINION? I have no best picture, but one that I like a lot. This one: http://www.flickr. com/photos/lucapatrone/4187310115/ WHAT MAKES A PICTURE GOOD IN YOUR OPINION? All that remains after you looked at it.
WHAT DON’T YOU LIKE ABOUT THE WORLD OF PHOTOGRAPHY? It happens often that clients want to adapt to the style chosen by the big brands. It is not easy to change someone’s opinion about “commercial photography”. Things are changing already though, and that concept of “commercial photography” is becoming more creative and editorial! DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF A GOOD PHOTOGRAPHER? That is a difficult question. If I have to judge from the perspective of clients and brands working with me, then yes. If I have to judge from my personal point of view, I have to improve a lot ;). WITH WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO WORK IN THE FUTURE? I would like to work with big brands like Cavalli or Armani, and shoot editorials for Marie Claire, that I shot just one time. WHAT ARE YOUR STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES? I am really creative and have skills in accomplishing the right mood. Most of all I am enthusiastic about my work. I will have to improve my entrepreneurial side, because I care much more about creating beautiful pictures, instead of paying attention to budget ;). DO YOU WANT TO CONTINUE TAKING PICTURES FOREVER? Yes! I am also starting to produce videos. WHAT SHOULD THE PERFECT MODEL LOOK LIKE? The perfect model is not just a model, but also an actress. Of course she has to be all around beautiful and carry the garments well, but most importantly she has to act like an actress, from posing to facial expressions.

Bombay Show Pig is an indie/noise trio from The Hague and Amsterdam. Their mix of raw guitars and drums with soulful vocals makes for a new sound within the Dutch Indie scene. They’re often compared to bands like ‘Yeah Yeah Yeah’s’ and ‘Death From Above 1979’. After releasing their first EP in 2009 they got a lot of good reviews wich resulted in opening shows for ‘Times New Viking’ and ‘The Black Box Revelation’. Their recently released second EP ‘Baby, It’s A Face’ was produced by Tjeerd Bomhof from the Dutch band ‘Voicst’. There was also a special collaboration on the song ‘Curve Ball’, wich was mixed by Eli Janney from ‘Girls Against Boys’. For more info check: www.myspace.com/bombayshowpig
