Phonics & Grammar

Why the programme is trusted

• Systematic and progressive approach to teaching children essential literacy skills

Our programme is used in over 150 countries worldwide, empowering thousands of teachers who transform children’s literacy ability. The programme enables teachers to get their children reading and writing from an early age. As the leading synthetic phonics publisher, and the most experienced, we provide a 7-year programme that takes children beyond phonics and integrates spelling, punctuation and grammar too!

• Embeds phonics, spelling, punctuation and grammar from Reception/P1 to Year 6/P7

• Enables children to meet and exceed the expectations of the Phonics Screening Check and National Curriculum

• Teaching is multi-sensory and active with fun actions, stories and songs

• Training options to suit your school needs, including online courses, apps, scheduled courses and whole school training days

• Resources provide detailed insights on the teaching approach to help and guide teachers

• Flexible, fun and easy to implement in school

They have reported during our regular reading review days that they find the programme really engaging with clear instructions and resources in the handbooks and step-by-step guidance from the interactive white board.

Teachers have reported feeling a greater confidence when teaching phonics and they enjoy the consistency of the approach that helps to revise and embed previous knowledge before moving on with new sounds.

Phonics is trusted.

At Booker Avenue Infants we put reading as our highest priority. Our aim is to develop a love of reading in all children and to provide them with the skills to become independent, fluent readers. We have found since using Jolly Phonics that the children not only have made fantastic progress but have developed a real love of phonics sessions.

In a recent “pupil voice” survey, 100% of our children said they enjoy and look forward to their daily phonic sessions. Not only is it the children enjoying phonics but I have noticed since moving to the Jolly Phonics programme that my staff all enjoy phonics too!

For us as a school we wanted a programme that was not only ambitious but that would excite and engage our entire school family. We feel with the Jolly Phonics programme we have achieved this and developed our aim of fostering and instilling a love of reading and phonics throughout our school.

Headteacher, Lynne Brown, tells us why Jolly

Phonics & Grammar

A whole-school approach to high-quality literacy teaching

The programme continues through the school years, by extending the earlier phonics teaching with further spelling, grammar and punctuation concepts. Each year of teaching provides continuous revision and consolidation of topics taught in previous years. This enables children to spell and punctuate more accurately, use a wider vocabulary and have a clear understanding of how language works.

Phonics (Reception)

Children are taught the 42 letter sounds, how to write them, how to blend the sounds for reading and how to identify the sounds in words for spelling and writing. Alongside this children learn about tricky words as well as being introduced to the alternative spellings of vowels.

Grammar (Years 1-6)

Children are introduced to parts of speech to include nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions. Colours and actions are used to help children identify parts of speech in sentences.

The examples above show how children are taken through the various forms that verbs may take.

4
Sample pages show how phonics, grammar, spelling and punctuation concepts are introduced through the programme. These pages are from the Phonics and Grammar Pupil Books. The same content can also be found in the Phonics and Grammar Handbooks. sample lesson plans on our website

Spelling (Years 1-6)

Children are initially taught one way of spelling a sound before gradually learning that the same sound can be represented in a number of different forms. They start with the common variations, before progressing to other, more unusual spelling patterns that occur as the children develop their vocabulary for reading and writing.

Punctuation (Years 1-6)

Children are introduced to punctuation concepts and continue to revise these throughout the school years. Starting with full stops and speech marks, children will then learn how to use exclamation and question marks, colons and semi-colons, hyphens, commas, bullet points and much more.

The examples above show how children are introduced to new punctuation.

Perfect for ESL children

Children who do not have English as their first language need guidance in saying the letter sounds correctly, which is just what the TalkingPEN provides. They may also need the guidance in blending sounds to read words. The result is an amazing improvement in their articulation of English.

Jolly Buddies

Phonics Buddies are pairings of an older child, such as a child from Year 6, and a younger child, who work together with Jolly Phonics Extra. The older child is asked to help the younger child, but in practice, both of them might be struggling. With Phonics Buddies they both benefit by working together.

Jolly English

Who is Jolly English for?

Jolly English is an English language course that has been carefully developed and sequenced for preschool children who have little or no knowledge of English.
