Kimbolton School Open Mornings 24th September & 1st October 10am -12pm
With small classes and a friendly, caring atmosphere, Kimbolton Preparatory School has the feel of a village school yet the facilities and opportunities that only a bigger one can offer. Its pupils receive plenty of individual attention but have enough classmates to develop a wide circle of friends. They cover the National Curriculum and more besides: modern foreign languages and weekly swimming lessons from age five, an extensive programme of trips and visits in support of their classroom-based learning and a huge range of activities at lunchtimes and after-school. As children progress through the School, formal sports coaching and inter-school fixtures are introduced. Music is taught from Reception onwards and individual instrumental lessons from specialist visiting music teachers are available once a child is ready. There are various ensembles which regularly form the School’s orchestra for formal and informal concerts. ‘Kim Club’ provides before and after-school care for all ages. Life at Kimbolton Preparatory School is busy, hugely rewarding and great fun. The academic results are excellent but the School’s approach is one of balance so that children are stimulated, developed and challenged in many different ways. Kimbolton Preparatory School caters for children from ages four to eleven. Almost all of them progress, with their friends, to Kimbolton School for their secondary education where the ethos continues. The Prep and Senior Schools are located at opposite ends of Kimbolton School’s stunning 120-acre campus which includes extensive parkland and the historic Kimbolton Castle, the former residence of the Dukes of Manchester and once home to Queen Katharine of Aragon. see advert on page 2

Get ‘Em Out for Charity! Every year in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Crazy Glazy Ceramic Café of Cambridge Street, Godmanchester asks everyone, women and men alike to get their breasts out and leave their “mark” for Breast Cancer Care. Already the staff, their friends and family have stripped off to create one of a kind BREAST PRINTS on ceramics to raise funds for charity. At our 2008 event we raised over £1300, in 2009 we raised over £1700, in 2010 we raised more than £2000!!! We hope to beat our record again this year! The BREAST PRINTS are done the same way hand and foot prints are, by applying the paint directly to the skin, then pressing it onto the ceramic, but with one difference…designs are painted on instead of one flat colour to create art! We have already created pairs of jack o’ lanterns, birds, flowers, butterflies and we have a library of other great ideas waiting to be done! Anyone wishing to create a BREAST PRINT plate* can be assured 50% of the cost will go to charity. For an additional £2 a PINK Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon will be sealed onto your plate. *Selected other ceramics will be eligible for this special donation amount. All this breast art will be displayed in the shop window for the month of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month a perfect showcase for our th th st

Grow a love of reading in your child by Sue Atkins As a former Deputy Head and Class Teacher for 22 years, teaching children to read is a vital life skill that I feel very passionate about, because kids who can’t read, lack confidence, opportunities and are disempowered in all areas of life. I taught Reception children for a number of years and still have hugely fond memories of teaching my 35 five-year-olds to read. There are many ways to make learning fun but my advice is to read plenty of stories to your child from a very young age. Sing nursery rhymes with them and ask your kids open–ended questions about what they read to develop their comprehension and vocabulary. My top tip: hear your children read little and often - 15 minutes every day is FAR better than an hour once a week! It is vital that early reading experiences are happy, positive, relaxed and fun. Try and have the aim in your mind that it’s not just about teaching your kids about the mechanics of reading but to teach them to have a lifelong love of reading. Games are a brilliant way to make learning to read fun and interactive as the indirect approach helps build their confidence and also alleviates their sense of failure if they don’t pick up the words or sounds immediately.
10
I used the foam letters at bath time to play games with my kids. I also used to draw letters in the bubbles on their backs, which uses the kinaesthetic way of learning letters and words. It was all done light-heartedly with no pressure and the kids loved it.
I also used sand and sometimes flour on a tray in the garden to help the kids trace out letters and small words that rhymed – it was messy, fun and another simple way to learn to read and write. I think some parents don’t realise that it’s important for your child to learn the lower case or small letters rather than capital letters first. Most early books and games use lower case letters and your child will learn these when they start at school. Naturally you can still teach them some important words like their name, the road where they live or the names of rivers or countries which all begin with a capital letter. I used to play the Odd-One Out Game with the children in my class, which you can also play at home: Get a group of objects that all begin with the same sound except for one object. Then get your child to say all the words out loud so that they can hear the sounds of the words and ask them to see if they can pick the sound that is the “odd one out”. Make it fun by letting them keep the object and see how many times they can win the game.
Of course there is always the old favourite of i-spy but help your younger child by sounding out the letter phonically instead of saying the name of the letter. There are wonderful games on the market for helping to make reading a fun, relaxed activity and I particularly like the games from Orchard Toys. www.orchardtoys.com Sue Atkins is a Parenting Expert, Broadcaster, Speaker and Author of the Amazon best selling book "Raising Happy Children for Dummies" one in the famous black and yellow series and the highly acclaimed Parenting Made Easy CDs. A wonderful bonding experience and so much more... Despite the days becoming chillier, going to the pool still provides one of the best bonding experiences for you and your baby. Just 30 minutes swimming will provide you both with a great physical work out. This includes exercising muscles you’d never even find on land! Start as early as possible, as the activity is the best all rounder for aiding your baby’s development. A complete physical workout helps to develop the brain and it’s great for building their awareness & helps improve eating & sleeping patterns. It is really important to check that your instructor is fully qualified to teach your baby to swim - especially as there’s no regulation governing baby swimming. Anyone can set up a swim school & start teaching swimming, regardless of their lack of experience. The amazing thing about Water Babies instructors is that they could have qualified twice over as pilots in the time it takes them to complete their training. Call Debi today about a class near you.
