Welcome to the Spring Issue of Jolly Tots Oooooh it’s that lovely time of year again when bulbs start poking their heads out of the ground and you get to see baby lambs in the fields and finally lighter evenings are upon us. I love spring! It’s a great time to be gettng out and about plus Easter is an exciting time with lots going on especially for the little ones!
To encourage you to get out and about we decided on a wildlife theme for this issue with the main article ‘Wild about Wildlife’. Here Emma will give you a few suggestions on places you can go to explore wildlife along with ideas of how you can bring the wildlife to you. I was also very lucky recently to be invited to Shepreth Wildlife Park for the opening of their new education centre. The infamous Bill Oddie was there to open it and we caught up over some bird seed! See page 15 for details. As many of you will know Bill is a big twitcher so we thought to encourage the little one’s to take an interest in birds you could help them make a bird feeder (see page 21). While there, Shepreth Wildlife Park were very kind and offered five family tickets as a giveaway, so one of them could be yours if you enter on page 10. Also if you entered last issue’s giveaway then see if you got lucky on page 30.
If wildlife is really not your thing then don’t despair as there’s lots more content. Jane and her team cover the issue of teaching languages to pre-schoolers and on page 22 Little Language Learners have written a piece on how music facilitates language learning.
Also see how you can get involved in this years Sport Relief in Peterborough on page 19. We hope you enjoy!

The Crystal Lakes Fun Barn
A soft play area in Fenstanton which opened in October 2013 has filled a gap in the market for parents with young children and provided several new jobs. The area has been totally revamped and invigorated withi. Special praise has to go to the team of helpers. Flutterbyz Fun Barn, is based at the former Crystal Lakes on Low Road. Run by Vicki Mee and Wendy Muncaster, the two-tiered play area includes both a toddler and junior area and a café offering a wide choice of meals and homemade cookies and cakes.
Vicki said: “Everything has gone better than we could have imagined, we were nervous about starting the company because of the responsibility that comes with it, but it’s all ran smoothly and staff have thrown themselves into it.” Both Vicki and Wendy have vast experience in working at a Soft Play Area, having managed a centre four and two years respectively.
6
They have a real passion for Fluterbyz and together make a perfect team, complimenting each other. They believe they have created the right environment and atmosphere for children and adults to enjoy during their visit to FlutterByz. Asked where they got the name from, Wendy said her daughter, Molly, came up with it and it just seem right from that moment.
Flutterbyz Fun Barn is open from 10:00 – 17:00 Tuesday to Saturday, and from 10:00 – 16:00 on Sunday, it’s also available to book for parties with 2 party rooms - a newly opened Disco/Karaoke Roomand the new outdoor area coming in the Spring, call (01480) 493 394 or email fun@flutterbyz.co.uk Flutterbyz can also be found on Facebook @FlutterbyzFunBarn and Twitter @FlutterbyzFun

There's one activity that other parents may find stressful (or near impossible) with a small child; shopping. I’d agree that shopping for groceries with Gregory can be a nightmare as he either tears up and down the aisles simply because he can see a straight, obstacle free run, or else he rolls around whining and wanting every product in the world. However, for whatever reason, shopping for clothes can actually be quite a pleasant experience with Gregory, especially as he gets older and has more to say for himself, as he seems to enjoy browsing and offering useful opinions. Last week we were in a well known ladies' clothes shop, browsing around with no great purpose. He took it upon himself to poke around at the garments on the rails and point out items that he thought I might like. I walked over to the accessories with him trailing behind me. With my back turned for just a few seconds, Gregory pipes up, in possibly his loudest voice to date, 'Mummy, you've got these pants!' I turned around to see him stretching and pulling at a pair of flamingo pink knickers, high above his head. 'Are these the same as yours, Mummy?' I informed him in hushed tones that they were, to which he responded, 'Do you need another pair?' Before I got chance to reply, he yelled over, 'Actually, these ones would be too small for you!' I'll probably go clothes shopping alone next time...

When Two become ree Having a new baby can be hugely exciting and fulfilling, but adding another member to your family sometimes means your relationship as a couple can lose focus.
Research shows that couple relationships are more likely to fail in the first two years after having a baby than at any other time, but the good news is that it is also a time when many couples feel motivated to make changes to improve their relationship. New babies bring with them the stresses of lack of sleep, adjusting to new roles and less time to spend together. What can you do to strengthen your relationship at this special time? These are my top tips . • Rob Parsons, author of books such as Sixty Minute Parent, suggests couples go through periods of ‘January Love’ where loving doesn’t come easy and feelings of love aren’t that strong. After having a baby might feel like
one of these times. You can still ‘choose’ to love at this time though. Think of something that you could do for your partner – as feelings of affection will quite often come after a selfless act of kindness. • Try and think about what it is for your partner that makes them feel loved and cared for, for some of us this will be being told, or a small gift such as flowers for others it will be having something done for them (even like washing up after they have gone to bed so they don’t have to face it in the morning!). These are sometimes called our Love Languages – our preferences for ways to be showed affection. If you can find out your partner’s it will be easier to make them feel cared for.
• With a new baby around sometimes the hardest thing for couples can be the lack of spontaneity – not being able to decide to go to the cinema at the last minute on a Friday night. It
can take a bit more thought and planning but try to make time to do the things you previously enjoyed together. Perhaps you could make use of one of the supermarket meal deals and have a meal at home together, maybe put candles on the table? Or sign up for one of the films on demand packages and set aside a time each week to watch a film together.
• Talk to each other about how you feel – probably the most important thing of all. It is so easy to imagine that your partner has life easier watching him go off to work each morning and escaping from the nappies and feeding can look like a good deal, but when you’re struggling into work on very little sleep, the chance to nap when the baby does can look like bliss! Let each other know how it is for you and then you can move forward as new parents together, rather than letting yourselves drift apart.

Easter Chick Craft Project
Easter is approaching so we thought we would share a craft project you can do with your little one’s which would be fun to do in preparation for Easter and a great place to store their chocolate eggs.
1. First, paint your flowerpot a nice bright yellow!
Apply two coats and let the paint dry.
2. Cut a small triangle out of the orange paper/foam. Using PVA glue, stick this onto your flowerpot. This is your chick’s beak! If you don’t have orange paper or foam then you can paint an orange triangle for a beak onto the flowerpot instead. 3. Just above the beak, use a thin paintbrush and black acrylic paint to paint on the eyes. Alternatively you could glue on goggle eyes.
4. Now, on the yellow paper/foam, draw two wings. Cut these out and using PVA glue, stick on lots of feathers; they can be any colour you want. I chose yellow and orange! 5. Once the wings have dried, carefully stick them onto the back of your chick flowerpot. Nearly done!
What you need:
A flowerpot Yellow, orange and black acrylic paint A pack of multi-coloured feathers PVA glue Orange and yellow paper or sponge foam Colourful shredded paper Paintbrushes Scissors Yummy mini chocolate eggs!
6. If you want to add more feathers to the chick, this is the time to do it! Make sure that all the glue is dry before carrying on. We have placed feathers in the top of the pot. 7. Take the shredded paper, and pop it inside the chick, to make a comfy bed for all your delicious Easter treats! 8. Put all the yummy chocolate eggs inside your chick and they will be kept safe!
Happy Easter!

WILD ABOUT WILDLIFE
As the colder months are drawing to an end and spring is just around the corner, you may well find yourself in a position to shake off the winter blues and drag your family from their spell of hibernation to somewhere where the local wildlife may be emerging from theirs. Introducing toddlers to the wonders of wildlife at an early age is a fantastic idea as their little adventures will be filled with fun, educational aspects and healthy walks. We are very fortunate that, in our part of the world, we have a good variety of places to visit where the whole family can get involved with wildlife activities in their various forms.
RSPB Sandy
The Lodge Nature Reserve is a great place for all the family to visit. They have various periodical events for small children to get involved with, such as their 'Woodpecker Trail', where the children search for
12
the woodpecker pictures hidden in the woodland and listen out for their drumming as they go. They may even be lucky enough to spot a woodpecker! Outside of special events, you'll find that when you turn up, children are welcome to use RSPB Explorer Backpacks which contain activity booklets, bug viewers and binoculars. Perfect for your little adventurers! www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guid e/t/thelodge 01767 680541
Stanwick Lakes
There's a lot for children to get involved with at Stanwick Lakes and when they complete their adventures on the reserve, they
can contunue their wildlife education indoors at the 'Discovery Zone', where they can find out more about the reserve and enjoy the games, displays and feely boxes! www.stanwicklakes.org.uk/northa mpton 01933 625522
Paxton Pits
During school holidays The Wildlife Trust run ‘Drop in Family Days’ at the education centre, which is a fantastic opportunity for little ones to roll up their sleeves and try their hand at pond dipping and mini beast hunting! They rotate other activities by theme and time of year, but some previous ones
Like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/jollytotsmagazine and follow us on Twitter: @JollyTotsMag
have included making 'magic potions' from herbs and flowers and making a mini beast hotel. http://www.wildlifebcn.org 01480 473161
Ferry Meadows
Pop along to the beautiful Ferry Meadows to take your tots to appreciate both dry land and water activities. As an extra treat, they’ll love the Miniture Train Ride www.neneparktrust.org.uk/ferrymeadows 01733 234193 In between your outdoor excursions, why not create a mini wildlife sanctuary in your garden at home? It's surprising how simple it can be to establish an abundance of habitats where you and the children can get close-up and personal with their feathery/furry/multi-legged occupants! Read on for some ideas on how to make your garden an attractive place to live!
Plant some Bramble
Otherwise known as the blackberry bush, this prickly plant attracts birds and insects in their droves as they all make use of it at different times of year, for different purposes. In early summer the flowers will pull the insect crowd in as they poke around for nectar and your little one can learn about the wonders of bees, moths and butterflies, amongst others. As summer progresses and blackberries appear, you'll find that an abundance of birds such as chaffinches and robins and small mammals such as mice, will drop by for a feast. You may even find that some of them will choose to nest there. Don't forget to pull a
few juicy blackberries off to put in a pie!
Make a Log Pile
While you may not be able to think of many uses for old decaying wood, there are hundreds of species who think that it's a real treat. Set up a long pile of dead wood in your garden and check to see what occurs naturally over a time (but do be very gentle when moving the wood around). You can find countless creatures in this habitat, including toads, earwigs and slow-worms. Some interesting species of fungi can also grow in this habitat.
Make a Hedgehog Teepee
You don't need much more than a pile of sticks and a bin liner to create a wonderful little home for our prickly friends (do an internet search on the method). Pop some small chunks of carrot or apple near to the entrance and keep your eyes peeled. Don't get too close though, otherwise you'll scare them away!
Create a Birdbath
There's no need to go to the expense of buying a birdbath when you can create one from an old dish or an upturned dustbin lid! Birds aren't too fussy about sharing bath water or indeed, drinking from a bowl full of feathers! For both of these purposes, bird baths are an important feature for any wildlife garden. Ensure that the water is changed frequently to keep it clean and don't forget to remove snow and ice during cold spells.
Introduce a Bog Garden
This is a great idea if you feel that putting a pond in your garden may be too dangerous
with little ones running around. A bog garden is made in much the same way as a pond, but with a punctured pond lining in order to allow drainage whilst keeping the ground nice and moist. A bog garden can play host to a range of fascinating water loving creatures, such as frogs, toads, newts, diving beetles and water scorpions. There are also many wonderful plants that will survive in this environment.
Don't forget to create a little kit for your little explorers so they can get their hands dirty and make the most of their wildlife adventures. Consider adding a magnifying glass in order for the children to get a good view of the creepy crawlies as they lift rocks and wood. A little creature viewer or simply a clear jar or container with air holes is a fantastic way to keep the insects in close proximity for the little ones to peep at them. A good idea is to add a soft paintbrush to the kit also; the insects can be gently brushed into the container instead of grabbed by eager little fingers! Finally, invest in a pair of binoculars to spot the birds and mammals, as it's unlikely that they'll stick around too long for a close up view! When you have your kit together and are ready for a day out or a short trip into the garden, don't forget to include some tick sheets if you want to give them a hunting challenge or even some plain paper, so that you and your children can write down and draw what you find and do your research online when you return. Happy wildlife spotting!

NEW WILDLIFE EDUCATION CENTRE TURNS OUT TO BE A ‘GOODIE’ Visitors to Shepreth Wildlife Park were given a unique chance to explore the world of natural history and walk with dinosaurs at an exhilarating new Education & Discovery Centre which was officially opened by national treasure, Bill Oddie. Former star of The Goodies, Bill Oddie, who is today better known for his wildlife presenting and bird watching, gave an enlightening talk about his own love affair with wildlife, and more recently with zoos, before officially unveiling a plaque. Bill had also been tasked with feeding the tigers earlier in the day, and later helping to plant a tree and bury a time capsule for future generations to find.
The Shepreth Wildlife Park Education & Discovery Centre, now open to all visitors to the wildlife park, exhibits life-size dinosaurs and cabinets full of amazing artefacts. The Hertfordshire based centre includes a spacious play area, arts & craft tables for the younger children and a large seating area and stage surrounded by visual stimulus, including everything from academic presentations to a model dodo who looks real enough to walk up to the audience and say hello. The centre is also complimented by a collection of live invertebrates and reptiles, which are used by the Education team to enthuse and inspire children and adults of all ages!
Shepreth Wildlife Park, set in natural grounds, is home to tigers, mountain lion, otters, monkeys, reptiles, birds of prey, and even creepy crawlies! Since it opened its doors to the public, over 25 years ago, the Wildlife Park has become one of East Anglia’s major attractions. There’s so much to do from hand feeding ponies and fish to playing ‘pirates’ or even stroking a cockroach. A fun day out for all the family! Visit: www.sheprethwildlifepark.co.uk
Bill Oddie said: “There has been a great atmosphere, it’s clear people work here because they love it, the new centre is fantastic. It’s obviously better if children are aware of climate change and places like this will encourage them to learn more.”
Lainie Bazzoni, Head Of Shepreth Education said: “The new Education & Discovery Centre brings the world of natural history alive and the opportunity for young and old alike to explore the impressive exhibits and attractions that are set alongside the Wildlife Park itself, which is home to many kinds of animals from tigers to meerkats! We are very excited to have Bill Oddie here today to open the new centre and feed our tigers as well!”

“Ask Jane”
Louise from St. Ives asks:
Is there an advantage of teaching a pre-school child a second language?
Mother to three and owner of six nurseries, Jane and her team are on hand to use their knowledge and pearls of wisdom to answer your questions. If you would like to ask Jane and her team anything relating to raising your children then please get in touch by emailing editor@jollytotsmagazine.co.uk. Disclaimer: The answers given are Jane and her teams opinion and it's always advisable to check with the relevant authorities and the latest guidelines.
There has been a great deal of discussion recently about the potential benefits of children learning a second language as early as possible. Since 2010 it has been the aim for children to be taught Modern Foreign Languages at Key Stage 2 and this will be made compulsory in 2014. Many people believe that this does not go far enough and that children should learn an additional language as early as the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). At the moment, second language teaching is not a core part of the EYFS but there are many experts who believe it should be. Several nurseries have taken this on board and have begun to integrate language teaching into their timetables. Research has shown many advantages to this early language teaching.
Importantly, the younger a child is, the more enthusiastic and lively as learners they tend to be. They are less embarrassed than adults and older children about talking in a new language and their lack of inhibitions helps them to develop a more native-like accent. Babies are born ready and willing to communicate with the world around them. They repeat sounds that they hear and the attention this leads to acts as a reward, which stimulates them to continue or increase vocalisation. This same principle applies to learning a second language.

Another advantage is that learning an additional language can develop a child’s ability to listen attentively. Research has shown that children, who learn an additional language early in their lives, see improvements in overall cognitive development, including increased creative thinking and development in problem solving abilities, which in turn benefits their mathematical understanding. Thirdly, language learning can lead to increased confidence and self-esteem, as well as improved vocabulary in the child’s first language.
There are people who are concerned that investment needs to be made in order for language learning to be truly effective as the last time it was attempted in younger children the effects were not as marked as people had hoped. Also in order for language teaching to be embedded into nurseries and schools, teachers and practitioners need to be confident in their own language abilities. However, there are ways that languages can be approached in nurseries without the need for vast amounts of training and investment. Practitioners use songs and singing. Singing is vital for promoting early literacy skills and this is extended to language learning. Children pick up vocabulary very quickly and easily as long as the words are heard clearly within the song and not drowned out by loud instruments!
Books and audio stories can also be utilised. This is particularly effective as a way of introducing new vocabulary and phrases to children in a familiar context. Finally, Technology and ICT are used as a tool to support when teachers and practitioners are not as confident in their own language skills as they can help with pronunciation.
However language is taught, evidence suggests that short and frequent exposure to the language is most effective and this can easily be integrated into a nursery setting. Another factor to consider when choosing your child’s nursery perhaps?

How the power of music nurtures language learning Foreign languages practitioner, Vicky Payne is the founder of Little Language Learners (see advert on page 16), which teaches Spanish to babies, toddlers and children (and their parents and carers!) The course she has designed is based largely on music and singing. We asked her why music is used as a primary tool in her classes. “Everybody loves music, it is great entertainment that can be used to help you relax, or focus. Not only that, it has amazing and positive effects on your brain, particularly when you are learning a language! There are some simple reasons as to why music can be used as a major tool in language learning”
“Have you ever wondered why a song or melody gets “stuck in your head” ? Why doesn’t that happen with sentences from a dialogue on tv? The answer is because music stimulates memory like nothing else. Try picking your favourite tune, and singing the days of the week to it in a foreign language, you’ll have memorised them in no time at all!” “Song lyrics also expose you to a wider range of vocabulary and sentence structures, which you wouldn’t find in other language learning contexts.”
“I have also found with my own children, that the rhythm of the music makes it easier for the brain to decipher and articulate correct pronunciation, plus, they really use the mood of the music to interpret the meaning of words. Linked to this is the fact that repeated exposure to an album or songs, means that not just the melody, but the language itself becomes embedded into the memory. In class we couple songs with actions and visual aids such as pictures, or animations to enrich the learning environment.” “Lastly, music is just great fun, it is so emotionally stimulating. Let’s face it, the best way to learn is by enjoying yourself! “
