Welcome to the Autumn issue of Jolly Tots! Summer is over for another year and it’s time once again to dig out those rain coats and wellies! Getting out and about is important for all of us. Don’t let the weather get the better of you - there’s still plenty to do outdoors. Why not catch the Santa Special at Nene Valley Railway or visit Thurleigh Farm for a variety of activities throughout the season. Despite our best efforts as parents, it can stiil be a battle to drag children away from the television. Our resident parenting expert, Susan Elliot-Wright gives sound advice in her feature on page 13 ‘Television - friend or enemy?’ which is all about how to manage televsion watching so everyone stays happy. Finally, welcome to our newest Jolly Tot - my beautiful baby daughter Sophie, born in June and a true bundle of joy! Best wishes,

Kimbolton School Open Day Saturday 2nd October 2010
With small classes and a friendly, caring atmosphere, Kimbolton Preparatory School has the feel of a village school yet the facilities and opportunities that only a bigger one can offer. Its pupils receive plenty of individual attention but have enough classmates to develop a wide circle of friends. They cover the National Curriculum and more besides: modern foreign languages and weekly swimming lessons from age five, an extensive programme of trips and visits in support of their classroom-based learning and a huge range of activities at lunchtimes and after-school. As children progress through the School, formal sports coaching and inter-school fixtures are introduced. Music is taught from Reception onwards and individual instrumental lessons from specialist visiting music teachers are available once a child is ready. There are various ensembles which regularly form the School’s orchestra for formal and informal concerts. ‘Kim Club’ provides before and after-school care for all ages. Life at Kimbolton Preparatory School is busy, hugely rewarding and great fun. The academic results are excellent but the School’s approach is one of balance so that children are stimulated, developed and challenged in many different ways. Kimbolton Preparatory School caters for children from ages four to eleven. Almost all of them progress, with their friends, to Kimbolton School for their secondary education where the ethos continues. The Prep and Senior Schools are located at opposite ends of Kimbolton School’s stunning 120-acre campus which includes extensive parkland and the historic Kimbolton Castle, the former residence of the Dukes of Manchester and once home to Queen Katharine of Aragon.

A new way to introduce youngsters to the beautiful game has kicked off in Peterborough. Little Kickers provide pre-school children (18 months - 7 years) with a fun, positive introduction to football. The programme was developed by FA qualified coaches and nursery teachers with input from child health specialists. Each class is run by 2 coaches and enables the children to develop football skills whilst encouraging the development of Early Learning Skills. We feel our classes are different from other football classes because they are specifically tailored to suit the development needs of such young children. It’s probably worth reiterating that Little Kickers isn’t about finding the next generation of Lampards, Gerrards or Rooneys. Our sole goal is to provide an informal, footy-themed environment where children can begin to learn essential, elementary life skills, (confidence, co-ordination, control and camaraderie) in a friendly, fun-packed, pressure-free environment that stimulates curious young minds. With our 10,000th child recently signed up and 528 classes sprinkled throughout the country, we truly believe that in our own small way, we’re providing a positive introduction to sport and an energetic solution to a more health-conscious lifestyle. Classes are run in Peterborough and Stamford with more being planned for the region. For more information or to come along for a free taster session please contact the Little Kickers hotline on 07976 179899 or visit our website www.littlekickers.co.uk

Swimming with your baby. Sounds lovely. And it is.
In fact, it’s more than lovely. It’s one of the most memorable, bonding, thrilling experiences the two of you will ever know. But, along with the fun and developmental aspects, there’s a lot of technical stuff to consider. And that’s where we come in: Water Babies, the UK’s leading baby swim school. We’ve got the wealth of knowledge and desire to ensure you’ll experience something truly extraordinary. This is one of the most magical times in your life. And we hope to enhance it for you. Extraordinary Instructors: who could have qualified as private pilots - three times over - in the time it takes them to train. More than 50 hours pool work; at least 25 assessed lessons; internal and external exams. There’s a lot to do. And that’s why we’re proud to call them world-class professionals.
Want to work for yourself or book a party? Call me today to find out your hostess incentives or you can shop online.
Extraordinary Programme: There’s a reason why our courses have a beginning, middle and carefully monitored progression. Because only then can your baby benefit from the meticulously constructed building blocks that will see them swimming by around thirty months. Extraordinary Results: Our technical expertise is one of the reasons why we’ve won four national awards – the first baby swimming company to do so. And why seven of our Water Babies have saved themselves from drowning in the past twenty-four months. Utterly fantastic; especially when you consider that three of them were only two. Water Babies is the baby swimming company most recommended by parents to other parents. And it’s why we’re now the largest in the world. That, and our absolute passion for what we do. Water Babies the start of something extraordinary...

A JEWELLERY KEEPSAKE OF YOUR LITTLE TREASURES A local woman who dreamed of starting her own business has realised her ambition through a chance encounter with a company called Smallprint. Smallprint creates beautiful pieces of hand crafted jewellery that capture children’s (or adult’s!) fingerprints in polished silver keepsakes, including pendants, cufflinks, keyrings and charm bracelets. As well as fingerprint jewellery, we can also create pieces featuring a treasured drawing, handwriting, or even hand/footprints and paw prints. Ruth Campbell from Warboys near Huntingdon, mum to Morgan and Caitlyn, was made redundant 18 months ago. “I had thought about starting my own business but I just didn’t have the time to do the research required. Then I came across an advert for a franchise opportunity so I emailed that day and the rest, as they say is history, six months later I was on my training, and now I have my own business.” Each piece of jewellery is hand made by Ruth using a product called precious metal clay. Your child’s fingerprint is taken directly into the clay, which when fired becomes the piece of jewellery which means it really has been “touched by someone you love”. There are a number of ways that you can have the jewellery made, either by visiting Ruth at her home, arranging a party with friends or visiting her stand at a local event. If you are interested in having a piece made from the Smallprint range email Ruth on ruthiec@smallp.co.uk or see our advert above for more details.

Television – friend or enemy? by Susan Elliot-Wright
Recent research suggests that watching too much television can have a serious effect on a child’s development and language skills. A US team monitored 329 children aged between two months and four years over a two-year period. The results, published in 2009, showed that when the TV was on – even if it was only in the background – the number of words spoken or sounds made by either child or adult were considerably reduced.
Monitor their viewing to make sure what they’re watching is age-appropriate. DVDs/videos may be better – they tend to watch them several times and the repetition of words can help with language development. Make rules and stick to them. For example, no TV in bedrooms or during mealtimes.
Experts have long been aware of a link between linguistic problems and heavy TV watching in young children; in fact, the American Academy of Paediatrics recommends no TV at all for the under twos. However, there’s some evidence to suggest that, for children over two, at least, some programmes can actually improve language stills. So what’s best for your child? The important thing is to be selective, and to think about quality as well as quantity. The best type of viewing is interactive family viewing, where issues raised on television or DVD can be discussed. It’s a good way to initiate problem-solving in older children, and with younger children, it’s a chance to explain the difference between fact and fantasy. But it shouldn’t be used as an electronic babysitter, nor should it be used as a substitute for other activity. It can however, be a useful starting point for imaginative play.
TV Tips Watch with them when possible and discuss the programmes afterwards.
Encourage them to be selective, choosing what to watch and switching off afterwards. Remember they’ll learn by example, so if you have TV on all the time, that’s what they’ll expect. Plan viewing in advance so you can sort out disagreements between siblings in plenty of time. Maybe they could take turns in choosing what to watch.
