Swimming with your baby. Sounds lovely. And it is. In fact, it’s more than lovely. It’s one of the most memorable, thrilling and bonding things the two of you will ever do. But, along with the fun and developmental aspects, there’s a lot of technical stuff to consider. And that’s where we come in: Water Babies, the UK’s leading baby swim school. We’ve got the wealth of knowledge and desire to ensure you’ll experience something truly extraordinary. This is one of the most magical times in your life, and we hope to enhance it for you.

Francesca and Georgina Dillon photographed by Anna James for Water Babies

Extraordinary instructors: Who could have qualified as private pilots - three times over - in the time it takes them to train. More than 50 hours in the pool; at least 25 assessed lessons; internal and external exams. There’s a lot to do. And that’s why we’re proud to call them world-class professionals. (Although, incidentally, many are also ex-doctors, psychologists, international sportsmen, lawyers and teachers too). Who’d have thought that how a baby is held in the water will influence their future swimming position? But it will. And how do you interpret the range of subtle signs your baby will use to communicate their feelings in the pool? It’s all this, and so much more, that our instructors are trained to show you. Extraordinary programme: Would you ever want to start watching a film half way through? There’s a reason why our courses have a beginning, middle and carefully monitored progression. Because only then can your baby benefit from the meticulously constructed building blocks that will see them swimming by around thirty months. We have an individual lesson plan for every week of the course (190 in total). That’s a lot of technical preparation. Leading us to win four national awards – the first baby swimming company to do so. Extraordinary Results: Seven of our Water Babies have saved themselves from drowning in the past 24 months. Utterly fantastic; especially when you consider that three of them were only two. Or watch a bunch of three year olds launching into the pool, glorying in the confidence they enjoy in water. Not so dramatic - but equally inspiring. Water Babies is the baby swimming company most recommended by parents to other parents. And it’s why we’re now the largest in the world. That, and our absolute passion for what we do. Water Babies the start of something extraordinary... Call Debi on : 01933 651790. Classes from newborn, held at Buckden Marina and other venues.

7 Daft things we say to our kids by Susan Elliot-Wright When we’re exasperated with our children, we can sometimes say things without thinking, and if we’re not careful, we can confuse a very young child. Try to be direct, and remember that young children don’t really understand subtlety or sarcasm. Here are just a few of the daft things we sometimes say to our kids: 1. Don’t answer back How else can he answer, other than ‘back’? What you probably mean is: ‘I want to you to understand and act on

14

what I’ve said without comment.’ Depending on what your child actually said in response, try simply, ‘I think that comment was rude/unnecessary.’

when they’re asking for something? Once they know this, you’ll just need to remind them with a whispered, ‘you forgot to say please.’

2. What’s the magic word?

3. Do you want a smack?

Plenty of mums have used this one, only to receive the innocent answer, ‘is it abracadabra?’ Obviously, if you say this often enough, they’ll understand what you mean. But it is sarcastic, and if you use sarcasm, they will, too. Why not just explain that it’s polite to say ‘please’

This is confusing for a young child and he’ll innocently say ‘no’. You probably mean, ‘I can’t believe you’re still behaving in this way even though I’ve told you to stop.’ Smacking really doesn’t help and many people feel it should be made illegal. If your child’s behaviour needs

Jolly Tots 24 page Spring issue 13:CBook

attention, try simply telling him what will happen if he persists, for example, ‘If you push your sister off the swing again, we’ll go home’. And then be prepared to carry it out! 4. Why don’t you grow up? This is doubly daft because firstly, if they could, they probably would, and secondly, when they do grow up, you’ll probably wish they were still little! You’re likely to say this when you’re exhausted and their behaviour is getting on your nerves. By telling them to grow up, you’ll end up making them feel foolish and humiliated. Instead, address the specific behaviour that’s making you angry. Tell your child why what he’s doing is not appropriate, what you want him to do instead, and what will happen if he continues to misbehave. 5. These are the happiest days of your life Childhood may seem idyllic to adults worrying about how to pay the bills or whether the car will pass its MOT. But children have problems too, and these can be just as worrying, keeping them awake at night and making them nervous or unhappy during the day. Try to get your child to talk about what it is that’s worrying him – it might be

28/02/2011

16:30

something you can help with. Or it may be something he feels he has little control over because of his age. Tell him that you know that being a child can be difficult. Explain that we all feel worried about things occasionally, but we can learn to deal with problems, especially if we talk to other people about them. 6. Father Christmas won’t come / your birthday will be cancelled

Page 15

initially, you’ll probably never have to do it again. 7. Stop playing with your food Is he really ‘playing’, or does he just not want to eat? If this is the case, simply remove it without a fuss. If he’s really playing with it – flicking peas across the table for example explain that food is for eating and that it’s bad manners to treat it in this way. And beware of telling him off for playing with his food if you spent the first two years of his life making each mouthful into a train or aeroplane!

We all make wild threats occasionally – often when we’re tired, frustrated, and desperate! But unless you’re actually going to cancel Santa or the birthday (or cinema or ice-skating or other big treat), you’ll make the behaviour worse, because your child will know that the boundaries you’ve set simply aren’t real. Make a th lesser threat and follow it through. For example, no television for the evening, no 11am – 1pm computer use, or Priory Centre, St Neots you could cancel Entrance £1 (50p after 12 noon) in aid of the National Childbirth Trust charity a regular treat, Items for sale: Good quality baby & children’s like swimming, clothes, maternity wear, nursery equipment, toys & books the park or having a friend to You can sell your good quality items through us. Sophie's Butterfly Party Sophie runs into the room followed by her friends. They all have butterflies painted on their cheeks. There is a buzz of Ooo’s and Ahh’s as the girls swarm around boxes filled with brightly coloured beads, silver charms and buttons. Sophie grabs some pliers and snaps them in the air. “Are we really going to use these?” she asks. “Cool!” Teresa, the designer today, has been a jeweller for over ten years and her status as a qualified teacher helps her tutor the girls. “Sophie loves making things,” her mum says. “And when my friend told me about Butterfly Party I thought, what a great idea – the girls make a piece of jewellery and decorate cupcakes. Oh, and they have their faces painted too.” The girls are busy happily discussing the progress they’ve made. One little girl puts her pliers down. She looks sad. Teresa sits down next to her. “Wow, what beautiful colours you’ve chosen – are you going to put that button there? Give me the pliers. I’ll show you.” They work together then Teresa hands the tool back. The girl chooses another bead and smiles as she twists the loop herself. Little girl’s parties are always going to be fun, right? But what about a party where they can learn something about design principles and basic jewellery-making techniques too? Sophie and her friends had a great time!

IT’S A BEAR’S LIFE James Corden, Narrator of New CBeebies Series, Little Charley Bear Chapman Entertainment, the creators of Roary the Racing Car and Fifi and the Flowertots, have proudly announced that British actor, James Corden, will star as the voice of the narrator in the new pre-school series, Little Charley Bear on CBeebies at 9.30am and 1.30pm. Little Charley Bear is aimed at young children aged up to six years. It is a contemporary, gently paced show that inspires creativity, discovery and imagination. It has the feel of a classic children’s television show but with brilliant CGI animation by Annix Studios based at Pinewood. Through imagination, children can learn and develop on a personal, social and emotional level with Little Charley Bear - the way he communicates his ideas, thoughts and feelings through movement and role play can aid and educate children all around the world with visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learning styles. James Corden, a BAFTA award winning actor, writer and producer, has great attention to detail and his ingenious timing creates television that is a pure pleasure to watch, so much so that The Independent hailed James Corden ‘the hottest property in British television.’ As well as Little Charley Bear, his latest work includes The Three Musketeers, a role with Billy Connolly in Gulliver’s Travels, his own sports quiz ‘A League Of Their Own’ and finally a return to the stage at the National Theatre.

Hicks Karate School of Excellence is a family run martial arts school operating in and around Peterborough. Sensei Andrew Hicks, the chief instructor, has been training in martial arts for over twenty-five years, including karate, kickboxing, tang-so-doo and kung fu. Together with his team of three senior instructors, two junior instructors and a leadership S.T.O.R.M. (Super Team Of Role Models) team, he runs over twenty-five classes during the week and teaches children from age three and a half in his pre-school programme called Little Ninjas, all the way up to adults aged sixty plus. Other classes range from children’s karate, adult’s karate and kickboxing to ladies fitness kickboxing and after school programmes. Sensei Hicks says, “Our classes are more than just kicking and punching, we teach self defence, focus, discipline, self control, fitness, life skills, respect and self confidence. As a former two times World Champion Title holder, Sensei Hicks and his team have taught and trained students to go on and win British, European and World titles and many students represent Great Britain abroad as part of the British Team. Being a family run martial arts school that has classes suitable for the whole family, many instructors own spouses and children are involved. At Hicks Karate they encourage family training together and family involvement. For this reason they dedicate two classes a week where all ages and all family members can train together: ‘The family that kicks together sticks together. Hicks Karate also offers facilities for corporate training programmes and currently have availability for schools. For more information or to book your four week special introductory course call Hicks Karate School of Excellence on 01733 810043 or 07974196256.
