It is difficult for many to give a clear answer as to whether the Bible is pure fact or complete fiction. Perspectives are divided between believers and atheists - and sometimes discussions get just as heated as when you discuss other "holy books" such as either the Quran or the Book of Mormon. Let us examine the overall perspectives: The believer's perspective The atheist's perspective The mainstream perspective The Believer's Perspective For believers there are numerous nuances, but the main perspective is that "All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:" (2. Timothy 3:16). That view is shared by both Christians and Jews. Disagreements arise when it comes to which of the 66 books of the Bible that are inspired. Jews believe the first 39 books are inspired - and that the Written Law, the Torah, is found in the very first five books of Moses. Christians, on the other hand, disagree somewhat as to whether the last 27 books - the so-called New Testament have superseded the Hebrew Scriptures. Such disagreements are at the root of the differences between the two belief systems. One is based upon Law whereas Christians claim that they are under grace, and consequently not really all that obligated to take the words of the Bible in the literal form in which they were written. The Atheist's Perspective The atheists have just as many nuances. Some won't deny there could very well be some original
cause, but they just don't make any religious issue out of it. We are here on the earth, and regardless of whether it happened by pure evolution or by some divine hand, the essense is the same. Many atheists are very moral people. They don't use religion as a measuring stick but take a humanist perspective on believing you have to act towards others as you would like others to treat you. A high moral standard that comes from common sense - not any religion as such. Other atheists, often former believers themselves, however, do take issue towards the question of both the Bible and evolution. They argue with others and want a scientific explanation for all things. They may be just as moral in their everyday dealings with others, but they are heavily antireligion, and therefore deny any value in any of the stories of the Bible. The Mainstream Perspective For the majority of people the view of the Bible is probably something in between fact and fiction. There are important lessons to be learned from the pages of the Bible, but the final decision on what is fact or fiction is personal - and therefore up to you. For most people there will be a pickand-choose as to what is inspired and what is fictional. In Conclusion Discussions about the inspired or non-inspired status of the Bible won't end anytime soon. People have argued over this for centuries, and they will probably discuss and argue for numerous new decades. The issue is either religious or atheist in nature, and we will only achieve peace between the two frontiers once people agree you can disagree on the issue.
