For this exhibition I have made journeys to some favourite spots and to some unfamiliar places. I didn’t always end up where I initially chose to go due to the weather or the number of people about, even curious Dartmoor ponies can play a role in determining my final destination. I have to feel that I am in the right place before I start to work.

The cycle from my house to the Exe estuary takes about an hour, a slow trip as I am weighed down by painting paraphernalia. I often followed the course of the river until I came in sight of the sea. This spring the estuary was very quiet as no trains were running after the storm damage at Dawlish.

W H I T E On another day, I drove to Sidmouth where I found the beach closed, a fence put across its entrance. I asked a man if I could go and paint. He said it was crazy closing the beach and told me to go ahead but to be careful. I was rewarded by beautiful waves and silvery light as well as having the beach to myself. The next week I was up on Dartmoor. Here, billowing spring clouds from the south dominated the skies and curlews flew around. Stone walls had been knocked down in places – winter storms again perhaps – so there was little shelter on Rippon Tor. When I am out painting I like to piece together the landscape so I always carry a map with me and will use it during the day to get a bearing of where I am, relating it to other places I have painted. From the top of Rippon Tor you can see down to Shaldon and Teignmouth and then inland across to Yar Tor and beyond. My paintings are in no way topographical but by looking across from where I am painting it is important to me to get to know where I am and to give the paintings a sense of the places I have travelled to.
