Roger Fry and Vanessa Bell, luminaries of the Bloomsbury set, believed art should be self-contained and not rely on external elements for its significance. In other words, imitating nature is not adequate for a work of art; the formal elements in the artwork need to interact to capture the essence of nature, not its surface. Secondly, Fry and Bell believed primitive art to be the highest artistic achievement. In this exhibition we have three artists of whom we are hopeful Fry and Bell would be proud. Heath Hearn follows in a line of Cornish artists who have embraced the primitive, he is fascinated by colour and naive expressionism. Stepping on the trail set by Roger Hilton and Peter Lanyon, Hearn’s landscapes do not focus on the beauty of nature alone, but on the fragile and sometimes crude relationship between man-made structures and natural environment. He beguilingly creates a self-contained world within his work. Likewise Dawn Stacey, although, her dreamlike paintings are more figurative, her distorted scale and perspective skew the work away from the representational. Indebted to her textile training she captures the essence of her subjects while the finished work conjures images of faded frescoes and tapestries. Rosemary Vanns also worked with success in textile design. Her bold, earthy work usually contains still life or primitive landscape. Strong lines and vibrant colour dominate her increasingly naive paintings. Using acrylic, collage and charcoal she strips away the extraneous to reveal only the minimum in depicting her subjects.
