On January 18, 1986 the first basketball game was played in the Dean E. Smith Center. A No.1 ranked Tar Heels defeated No. 3 ranked Duke in a rivalry game. That night Warren Martin made history by scoring the first Tar Heel basket in the new arena. Since that night, history has continued to be made in one of America’s premiere collegiate basketball arena’s. As the home of the University of North Carolina’s men’s basketball team, the Dean Dome, as it’s popularly referred to, has seen three national

championship teams, two hall of fame coaches and many decorated collegiate athletes grace its court. With one of the highest attendance records in the nation, the Dean Dome has provided almost 7 million fans with a place to watch basketball legends and a storied basketball program. For the past 25 years, the Smith Center has been the heart and home of the Carolina Way, and a place where legends are truly made.

Bynum Gymnasium was the home of the UNC basketball team from 1910 to 1924. It was originally built in 1904 as a university gym and pool. The building has since been remodeled and turned into offices.
The team played in the Indoor Athletic Center (Tin Can) from 1924-1938. The team ultimately moved becasue the venue was not large enough to accomodate enough fans. UNC’s record in the gym was 120-38.
Woollen gymnasium was the home of the men’s Tar Heel basketball team from 1938 to 1965. The gym had a seating capacity of 6,000. While playing in the gym, the team won the 1957 NCAA national championship.
Carmichael Auditorium was built as an annex to Woollen. While playing in the arena, the team had a 169-20 record. The arena was one of the loudest in the country and gave UNC a formidible home court advantage.
The Dean E. Smith Center is the current home of the UNC basketball team. It originally seated 21, 572 people, but has been expanded. Over the years, UNC has rarely lost more than three games in a season within the dome.

Beginning with the first season played in the Dean Dome in 1985-86, every season but the 2001-02 have had winning records within the dome.
Nine former Tar Heels have been honored by being accepted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Michael Jordan was the most recent Tar Heel inductee. A banner in the Dean Dome recognizes the honor of these former Tar Heels.

In order to have a jersey retired, a player must have won one of the following six awards: Associated Press Player of the Year, Oscar Robertson Trophy, National Association of Basketball Coaches Player of the Year, Sporting News Player of the Year, John R. The namesake behind the UNC’s premiere arena is former Tar Heel head coach Dean Smith. From 1961 to 1997 Smith led the Tar Heels to 11 final fours, won two national championships, and had 879 career wins. As head coach, Smith was a pioneer of college basketball and has been called a ‘coaching legend.’ Throughout the years, Smith was devoted to athletic and academic excellence, but above all else he was devoted to his players. When Smith was approached about the new arena bearing his name, he objected, but was eventually persuaded to let the name stand.

Men’s Basketball at the University of North Carolina has a long history of winning. But not every one of those games has been won in the same manner; some have been won by a large margin, others by a single shot at the buzzer. Regardless of the tactic, UNC’s overall record speaks to the talent of the players and coachs that have been a part of the program throughout its history.

UNC’s basketball program has been remarkably successful since its creation. The Tar Heels have won five NCAA championships and more ACC tournaments than any other team in the region. What makes Carolina basketball so successful? Hint: It’s not the pretty uniforms. Having a winning basketball team year after year requires a steady influx of great talent. That’s why Coach Williams and his staff work year-round scouring the country for future Tarheels. After all, it’s not x’s and o’s that win basketball games. It’s the Jimmys and the Joes.

Unanimous National Player of The Year in 1998; ACC player of the Year in 1998. One of the recurring anecdotes regarding Antawn Jamison references a missed basketball practice in high school because of church choir.

DID YOU KNOW? UNC’s mascot, a ram, is named Rameses. The Tarheel mascot is a ram because in 1922, the school’s best football player, Jack Merritt, was nicknamed “The Battering Ram.”
World-renowned designer and UNC graduate Alexander Julian added this argyle pattern to the UNC basketball uniform prior to the 1991-1992 season.

All in all, it’s probably best if you don’t choose halftime to do the things you need to do. But if you do, be prepared to brave the crowd, and be quick! The best option is to leave your seat a few minutes before halftime to be first in the long, long lines.

In 1487 Leonardo da Vinci drew a man exemplifying what the ancient Greek philosopher Vitruvius said are the perfect proportions for a man, with his height matching his wingspan. Michael Jordan is a modern example of this ideal at 6 feet 5 inches tall and a wingspan of 6 feet 5 inches, but in today’s world of superstar athletes his near perfect proportions are among his least impressive statistics.

Standing at 6-feet-2-inches tall, Cobb was the second All-American basketball player in UNC’s history and helped the Heels, then nicknamed the “White Phantoms,” win three consecutive Southern Conference Tournament titles. He left Chapel Hill with two more All-America recognitions, a perfect 26-0 season in 1924 and the Helms Foundation named him National Player of the Year in 1926.
A celebrated athlete in his native Johnstown, Pa., Glamack was left nearly blind in his left eye because of a high school football injury. When the 6-foot-7-inch giant finally left for college, he initially chose to continue his football career at a devilishly blue institution down the road. After coming to his senses and leaving, Glamack joined the UNC’s basketball team and led the Heels to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1941. The “Blind Bomber” used the painted lines on the court as guides to deliver a nearly unstoppable hook shot, earning him multiple National Player of the Year recognitions — a feat only shared by one other Tar Heel (Hint: Jordan).
Lennie Rosenbluth represented the zenith of coach Frank McGuire’s so-called “Underground Railroad” effort of bringing the top northern talent down to the South. At 6-foot-5, Rosenbluth averaged a chart-topping 26.9 points per game for the Heels during the regular season. In the 1957 NCAA championship title game, Rosenbluth scored 20 of UNC’s 54 points, leading to a dramatic triple overtime finish against the Kansas Jayhawks. His contributions also earned him NCAA National Player of the Year, ACC Player of the Year, ACC Tournament MVP and NCAA regional MVP in the same season.

Even though James Worthy only played for the Tar Heels for two and a half years, he definitely earned his place among fellow UNC legends. The 6-foot-9 forward known as “Big Game James” led the Heels to two ACC Tournament Championships and two NCAA Tournament Championship appearances. A game-clinching steal against the Georgetown Hoyas in the 1982 National championship game secured Tar Heel victory and Worthy’s recognition as the Tournament’s the Most Outstanding Player .

Easily the greatest basketball player of all time, Michael Jordan skyrocketed his athletic career by scoring the game-winning jump shot in the 1982 NCAA Championship game. With 15 seconds left in the game against the Georgetown Hoyas, the late-blooming 6-foot-4 guard from Wilmington proved his legendary status with a certain finesse that would eventually become his signature style. That year, Jordan earned the title of ACC Rookie of the Year and was later selected as a consensus All-American both his sophomore and junior years. In 1984, Jordan won two National Payer of the Year awards before ending his college career early and entering the NBA draft.
A 6-foot-9 native of Charlotte, Antawn Jamison helped the Tar Heels to two consecutive Final Four appearances in 1997 and 1998. Averaging 19.0 points and 9.9 rebounds per game during his three seasons wearing the blue and white, Jamison also aided in securing two consecutive ACC Tournament Championships. Jamison was awarded two National Player of the Year awards at the end of his junior year and decided to forgo his senior by entering into the NBA draft.
