Mr RB Jobbs’ Town Map II
Chapter 1 - A Jobbs Introduction r RB Jobbs likes his job. But to say that he likes his job would not be stating the truth because more than that, he just simply adores his job. He wasn’t considered a workaholic, not quite so when you came from Knab. The town of Knab, a small town located in Snoitapucco (locals pronounce it as Snoi-ta-puk-co) was like any typical town you would find in any other ordinary country in the world. Yet when it came to jobs, denizens of Knab and the whole of Snoitapucco held a very different view on jobs. More than just work, jobs to the people of Snoitapucco are a very important part of their lives. For a job to them is the expression of their hopes and dreams from young. The same went for Retail Banking Jobbs or, RB Jobbs in short. RB Jobbs never had many problems in his work but one day, something unexpected happened and it had him and his two companions in a squeeze.

Every bank branch has a Bank Manager Bank Managers The important job that awaits Bank Managers is to make certain that the bank is running smoothly and everything is in order.
Moving Ahead From ‘looking after’ a single bank branch, they may be promoted to ‘look after’ a few branches.
RB Jobbs works in Bankalopolis
2
The unfortunate people were, • A worrisome Bank Manager who worried far too much. • A Loan Officer who was a little bit grumpy. • And a Financial Advisor who was probably the only calm person around. Now Bank Managers do not have much in common with cows except that some of them do enjoy the occasional beef burger (if they are not vegetarians) and steak. But for RB Jobbs, the two seemingly unrelated things have suddenly developed a relationship with each other. Much worse, it gave him a terrible throbbing headache, the kind of which does not go away so easily because of his constant worrying. RB did not always have such problems before he was a Bank Manager. But ever since working in Bankalopolis and being promoted, the responsibilities increased and not to mention, the benefits as well. Being a Bank Manager, RB was in charge of everything that went on in the bank.

Retail Banks are catered for individual people and small businesses. You visit them when you have needs like, doing deposits, withdrawals, cashing in cheques, opening a new bank account or applying for credit cards. Retail Banks cater to your everyday needs.
Besides Retail Banks, there are also other different types of banks. Some banks are for very rich people and very large companies. Some banks even lend to countries! Investment Banks are for rich people and large companies while the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are for countries. The World Bank lends money to countries that are in need.
4
He had to make sure that his staff are doing their job the right way, procedures are followed and paper work are in order. RB also had to forge relationships with the bank’s customers by introducing the bank’s services to them. There are many things to do when you are the Bank Manager and less time for worrying. But when RB’s top staff, Madam Kruttle Prinkles and Mr Financia Ed-vizer got a muchdreaded illness, the worrying begun. That was the reason for the headache, a strange illness that he could do nothing about. For Madam Kruttle and Mr Financia came down with a dreaded illness called Cow Pox - a rare illness that only happens in stories and never in real life. The illness resembles in some ways like Chicken Pox but happens because the person had had too much beef to eat. Sufferers of this illness would display many characteristics of a cow.

A desire to eat grass and poop all over the place was the norm. The worse symptom that happens is the uncontrollable and extremely revolting release of gas from a region around the buttocks. Cow Pox was clearly much deadlier than Chicken Pox. People who have Cow Pox are quite often mistaken as being crazy and sent away to the nearest hospital for medical treatment. Doctors were unable to determine the cause of this strange illness but RB had to deal with it, even with the pungent smell of cow fart. He had to deal with the problem if he wanted to continue working as the Bank Manager. RB loved his job but having been told by his bosses that a certain customer is very important and that nothing should go wrong simply made him a worry rat. You see, a certain Prince from Aidni (this country should not be mistaken for a country of a similar name only spelt backwards) was due to arrive at his bank for a casual chitchat session.

The Prince had the simplest of request; to know more about what the bank could do for his people. And of all the people to talk to, he wanted to talk to Madam Kruttle and Mr Financia! The sight of two folks with grass in their mouths, body odour smelling of beef and the occasional ‘mooing’ isn’t a good image to present to a very important guest.

Dear RB, You have always displayed a good image of our bank to all of our customers. I am gladly pleased to know that things have been running well under your good guidance. However, you must know that should the Prince from Aidni be unhappy, you can look forward to sleeping on the streets the next day. Your Boss.
Your candid momentin! Taken at our last meeting your bank.
Warm Regards, Your Boss.

Chapter 2 - Learning From Madam Cow hankfully, RB was a quick thinker. He decided to hire two temporary assistants just for the casual chitchat session. And so he did. RB placed an ad in the newspaper the next day looking for Bank Manager Assistants. When RB managed to get two assistants for the positions, it was just in the nick of time. He had to get them up to speed on what Madam Kruttle and Mr Financia did in the bank. The two assistants were perfect as they seemed to understand the importance of listening and taking down notes. That greatly pleased RB for he was certain that nothing could get in the way of the meeting with the Prince. Now the two assistants where I shall not name them (they did not want their names to be in this book) have had no experience in working in a bank. After some basic introductions, RB got Madam kruttle to explain in detail what she did. As Mr Financia Ed-vizer and Madam Kruttle Prinkles would quite often be having a patch of grass in their mouths and ‘mooing’ occasionally, RB could not have them be seen by any of the customers. So he had the both of them positioned at the rear of the bank.

Borrowing money from a bank When you borrow money from the bank, you are required to pay interest. So the longer you take to pay back the money you borrowed, the more ‘extra money’ you have to pay! Pay your debts quickly!
12
Some of the other staff in the bank thought RB was rearing some cows in the bank. It was a strange thing to see ‘cows’ in a bank but after the initial shock and laughter, the session finally started. By virtue of age, Madam Kruttle would start the training. “Moo...” went Madam Kruttle like a cow. “As the both of you have known by now, I am in charge of all the loans in the bank. First and foremost, not every loan that a customer needs may be approved.” “That may sound cruel and uncaring but you can never be too safe when it comes to money,” said Madam Kruttle. “If someone needs a loan, I do a lot of checks on the person’s background and determine if he or she is able to return the money borrowed. If they are able to return the money borrowed, most of the time the loan will be approved.” The assistants nodded and smiled, taking down notes diligently.
13
If there’s something called interest, why do people want to borrow money? Haven’t they heard of saving up for what you want to buy? A need to borrow People borrow for all sorts of reasons. If everyone decides to save up in full for say a house before actually being able to have one, then it will take them many years before they even have a roof over their heads! Banks help by lending you money first and you can slowly return the borrowed money together with interest.
Bad Reason: A bad reason as to why people borrow money is to pay off gambling debts to the local mafia. Good Reasons: • For studying in college or the university. • To pay for your house • To pay for the family car. • For a new business
14
Madam Kruttle, always the diligent worker had a strict rule on having no nonsense and fun. But quite often while she talked, she did seem to bend the rule a little as she kept on chewing on some grass. Madam Kruttle’s personality also suited her job well for Loan Officers need to enjoy looking at numbers and doing the same thing over and over again. That might bore most people but not Madam Kruttle. Then again, being bored by her would be difficult as while she explained what a Loan Officer did, she did some crazy things. It was a spectacle to see what she did up close.
15
Loan Officers also need to try and get more loans for the bank by talking to customers and trying to get people to borrow more money from the bank. The banks then make money from the interest.
A specimen to examine As a simple example, just think of interest as extra amounts of money you will need to pay every year to the bank for borrowing their money. As long as you owe the bank money, you will need to pay interest. You will also need to pay back the amount of money you initially borrowed. Interest is not always bad If you think Interest is bad, don’t worry because Interest can also benefit you! If you put your money into the bank, the bank also gives you Interest! So start saving!
16
While she spoke, she chewed on some grass, mooed occasionally and released plenteous amounts of pungent gas. The stench was unbelievably foul and had a tinge of rottenness about it. But that wasn’t it as the shocking Madam Kruttle having some delicious munchies part came on further. Madam Kruttle started to shake and rattle as if struck by lightning. This was followed by a series of hiccups and then ending off with a very loud “Hick” before she stooped over, got on all fours and using her hands, ripped off a large chunk of grass and stuffed them into her mouth and chewed on it! And when she had finished chewing on the grass, she let out a “Moo”, shook her head and got back unto the chair almost as if she was back in her body. “That’s a sight, something we don’t see everyday. If I ever have a need to see cows, I won’t have to go to New Zealand. I have one right here, oh no, it’s two!” replied RB cheekily who then could not resist breaking out into laughter. Deciding that they had better continue the training, he said, “Alright Madam Kruttle. Let’s continue but first, you could wipe off that piece of grass sticking on your blouse.”
17
Loan Officer
Madam Kruttle Prinkles is the no nonsense, hardworking Loan Officer of Bankalopolis. She is always on a serious tone.
Nitty-gritty Details! A Loan Officer is the person in the bank who accepts or rejects all loan requests made to the bank. A Loan Officer will often be meeting up with customers to get to know their needs better. As loans can sometimes be in large amounts of money, the Loan Officer needs to check the background of the person or company applying for the loan and make sure that the individual can repay the money borrowed.
18
Almost robot like, the dame wiped off the grass and continued. Madam Kruttle Prinkles was the perfect Loan Officer, the dream of every Bank Manager. Hardworking and someone who follows every rule and doesn’t skip any, she fits the job just snuggly. The two assistants were busy jotting down everything Madam Kruttle said and nodding their heads in approval. As it was approaching lunch, RB decided to stop the session. He felt more relieved after the session as it was as if part of his worries disappeared. But something lingered at the back of his mind. He wondered as to why the two assistants never seem to speak a word to him. Perhaps they were just too shy, he reasoned. The Cow Pox virus up close. Very nasty indeed.
End of Chapter 19
Yearning For... To be a Loan Officer, you need to be good with numbers. On top of that, you need to be careful and have an eye for detail. Some experience is required for this role.
Needy stuff!
Loan Officer
• To be good in Mathematics • A confident and honest person • Does not mind traveling to the customer’s place often • Loan Officers always need to stick by the book and rules of the bank when they agree to lend the customer any money. • Most often, at least a degree in Business, Banking and Finance, Mathematics or Statistics.

Chapter 3 - Learning From Mr Cow fter the break, it was Mr Financia’s turn to start his portion of the training. Shaking both of their hands and introducing himself, they sat down on the beautiful deck chairs. Madam Kruttle was away as she had to run some errands. Mr Financia was a very different person as compared to Madam Kruttle. They might work at the same bank but have very different personalities. To be a Financial Advisor, one had to be friendly and chatty, the sort of person who could liven any conversation. Hailing from the poorest regions of France and growing up in Snoitapucco, he had all the friendliness of the French people and the hardworking culture and attitude of the people of Snoitapucco. It was a terrific mix as like Madam Kruttle they were the best at what they do. Financial Advisors are quite alike to Loan Officers as both jobs require them to get as many customers as possible for the bank. There are differences though. Loan Officers ‘lend’ customers money while Financial Advisors do their very best to get customers to engage in some form of investment. A basic example of an investment is a Fixed Deposit Account.
A
21
Loan Officers are also in charge of lending money to small businesses. Why? For example, when there is a new business, the boss will need money to buy equipment like computers, printers, modems etc.
Final words, Loan Officers usually work from a mobile office as they need to travel. Taking trips to the customer’s house or office is pretty common.
What are Investments? In our story, an Investment is ‘something’ that you buy using money, hoping to get more money out of it. There are many different kinds of Investment; an example would be a Fixed Deposit Account.
22
A Fixed Deposit Account is like a very safe piggy bank.
Throughout the session, understanding the intricate details of Mr Financia’s job seemed to be much easier. Lively and jovial, he made the conversations sound so much more interesting and fun (like this book). So said Mr Financia after a brief interruption, “Financial Advisors are responsible for helping people to make more money. They do this by introducing the different investment plans the bank has to people.” “It is the job of Financial Advisors like myself to help the customer choose and select as many different investment plans as possible instead of having just one,” said Mr Financia. “By buying different investment plans, it lowers the risk of having just one. This is also known as not putting all of your eggs into one basket. You might end up losing all of your money if you are not careful. The beauty of having different investment plans is that should one fail, the other plans might not.”
23
A Fixed Deposit Account is an example of an Investment. You can increase the amount of money you have by putting money into a Fixed Deposit Account. After a few years, the amount of money in the account increases because of interest given to you every year by the bank. A Fixed Deposit Account is a very safe investment choice to make.
Another safe investment stuff that you can make is called a Principal Protected Deposit Account (PPDA). A PPDA is unique in a sense in that the money placed in it is protected. Much like a Fixed Deposit Account except, a PPDA provides more interest.
The bank uses the money inside your PPDA account to do an investment and that, is why the bank is able to provide you with more interest. Superb!
24
“Any questions so far?” The two assistants shook their heads in a we-don’t-have-any-questions fashion. RB was very pleased that his two assistants were very quick learners. He felt a strong sense of confidence that nothing could go wrong, not any more. The session continued on smoothly as Mr Financia explained all the aspects of investing and all the hidden dangers - you may lose some of the money that has been set aside for investing. He also cautioned that being careful and prudent would help lower the risk of losing the money invested. Doing some homework on investing would also go a long way. Mr Financia always had a way with people, making friends rather than treating people as potential customers. He always reasoned with himself that if he could make an impact on people, they would remember him and true enough, he did managed to make an impact though not in the way he wanted.

Cash Flow may be the amount of money you have earned, the bills to be paid that affects the amount of money YOU have. However, I do not see the logic as to why I should pay for YOUR postage fee! Your Emplpyee, RB Jobbs P.s. Gratefully the postman was someone I knew.
26
Almost like what had happened to Madam Kruttle awhile back started to manifest again only this time, it happened quite differently. First there came the rushing of gas that came out from Mr Financia’s bloated stomach. But before he could open his mouth to release the gas, somehow or another the lump of gas got stuck at the back of his throat. Strangely his lips then clamped shut together without any reason and his cheeks started to expand a little making him look more like a stuffed chipmunk with food stored in its cheeks. As his bloated stomach continued to produce more gas, his cheeks started to swell and swell. Almost to the point of bursting, his mouth suddenly opened as if unable to contain the increasing amounts of gas. Immediately, all of the gas rushed out from his mouth with a hissing sound and created a sort of bubble that blew up outwards from his mouth. The bubble, a mixture of saliva and gas kept on growing and showed no sign of bursting.
27
Why do people buy stocks? To make money! A simple way of doing that is to buy a stock at a low price and sell it at a high price!
A specimen to examine So when you buy one at a low price of say, $2 you can wait for it to go up to maybe $5, and then sell it. You make $3 from this (5 – 2= 3). Now stocks are not considered a safe investment choice and you may end up losing all of your money.
So what exactly are
Equity Funds? Grownups like to use difficult words when they are able to use something simpler. Equity Funds are just made up of many different stocks in a ‘basket’. Now imagine a basket filled with many different stocks and that’s an Equity Fund. Don’t think it’ll be less risky though.
28
As the bubble grew into a significant size, it suddenly lifted Mr Financia off his feet. The poor chap then frantically waved his arms wildly in the air in a desperate attempt to grab a sharp object to pierce the bubble. He couldn’t find one and tried to use his fingers to pierce the soft delicate surface of the bubble. But his efforts were in vain as his fingers just sunk into the bubble that was both slimy and yucky. The bubble just seemed much too thick to be pierced. All RB and his two assistants could do was just to watch on helplessly as Mr Financia soon floated far too high for the bubble to be pierced.
End of Chapter
29
Just like I have mentioned, an Equity Fund is made up of many different stocks in a basket. But why are they safer? Well, it is not possible for the price of all the stocks to go down all at once so if you have many different types of stock, some prices will go up and some will go down. That is why it is safer.

Chapter 4 - The Prince Arrives Early B was in a dire predicament. He was at a lost and haven’t the slightest idea of what he could do. RB had reckoned that if the bubble were to be pierced, Mr Financia would quite certainly fall to his doom. “Don’t you worry Mr Financia! I’ll try to get you down! Just hang in there!” replied a flustered RB. But as if things were not already in a dire shape suddenly, the sound of trumpets blowing and drums beating filled the air. The Prince had arrived. The Prince decided to arrive earlier, a day in advance, to give RB a surprise visit. He enjoyed surprising people. The moment the Prince, the Great Adorably Charming and irresistibly cute Prince Mr Vege stepped into the bank, he marched straight on towards the rear of the bank, almost as if he knew his way around. He marched on like a frantic bull, arms swinging as he walked.

To be a Financial Advisor, you will need several things. It will be very good if you like making friends and meeting new people every day. You do not need to have much experience for this role.
Mr Vege arrives much too early
Financial Advisor • To be good in Mathematics • A confident and friendly person • Someone who likes to chat with people and has a friendly personality. • To pass certain exams and qualify as a Financial Advisor. • Most often, at least a college diploma or degree in Business, Banking and Finance, or a business related college diploma or degree.
32
RB tried to stall the Prince and even went as far as to obstruct his path but the Prince was insistent. He wanted to see how the rear of the bank looked like. From where he came from, it was a custom to visit the rear of a friend’s abode. The Prince had a similar view on working relations as well. Every rear section of the office building of a friend is to be visited first. The custom did not make any sense to RB and he had no choice but to agree to his strange request. After inspecting the rear of the bank, the Prince was decently pleased with the pleasant surroundings. As it is with most Princes, Mr Vege always had a way of getting things done his way. “Alright Mr Jobbs, can we start on this casual chitchat session by your staff, Mr Financia and Madam kruttle? I apologise for arriving a day earlier than I am expected but I am in a hurry and can only give you ten minutes. After all, I am a very busy Prince.” “Oh yes sure!” said RB and he pulled one of his assistant - the one who was to replace Mr Financia in front.
33
Looking very unprepared and slightly puzzled, the poor assistant just stood still and silent for about ten minutes, almost in a daze. The Prince stared at him, expecting something. The assistant stared back; looking a little confused and glanced at RB for a brief moment. RB tried to prompt the assistant to speak up but all he got was a confused look on the assistant’s face. The strange quietness from the assistant started to make the Prince very impatient. “So are you going to start talking or shall I leave as it’s obvious that I am not being respected!” yelled the frustrated Prince. The assistant wrote a note and passed it to the Prince and RB. The note had the following message: Dear Esteemed Prince, I think there is some misunderstanding here. It is not that I do not want to speak to you but the fact is that I can’t. I am born mute and am unable to speak. My female friend here is unable to speak as well.
34
RB almost had a heart attack when he read the note. It was almost as if a bomb had just exploded on the inside. “Why didn’t the both of you tell me you were unable to speak!” yelled an outraged RB. The female assistant then wrote a note: Dear RB, There wasn’t a need to say anything. You did place your ad in a newspaper for handicap people, you goof ball.
It was horrid. Just utterly dreadful and horrid. RB had made a huge mistake and it was about to get worse, a lot worse. Almost by coincidence, Mr Financia who has been floating just metres in the air from the seated Prince all this while suddenly had his bubble burst for no known reason. The bubble just decided to popped with a loud burst, splashing saliva everywhere. As with all things opposed to the hand of gravity, down came Mr Financia. His huge bottom landed nicely on the Prince’s face just before anyone could react. The Prince had never smelled the rear end of any cow or human before and that was certainly an experience to remember.
End of Chapter 35
All things opposed to the hand of gravity as a matter of natural course, succumb to it...

Cheerio octors were unable to find a cure for Cow Pox. Folks who had the bad fortune of bumping into this strange and harmless illness had no choice but to be vegetarians. Being a vegetarian is a good thing. So when the Prince, learning of the nasty virus, makes a royal invitation to Madam Kruttle and Mr Financia; to be kingly guests of his and teach his people a thing or two about loans and investments. RB was most thrilled about this and so were his bosses; he had a much chubbier paycheck. Mr Financia and Madam Kruttle were a lot more thrilled when they found out that there were plenty of folks in Aidni who enjoyed eating no meat for the rest of their lives. RB’s two assistants also had it going for them as they were asked to officially represent everyone whose understanding of Retail Banking was just next to cow poop. The two assistants were a fine example of how uneducated folks who knew nothing about what banking is all about can make a change in their lives.

Epilogue - Currency and The World Bank onths have long passed since Mr Financia left for Aidni on Prince Vege’s request. Missing his dear friend RB Jobbs, Mr Financia decided to take a trip back to Knab to pay his friends and RB a visit. Upon his return to Bankalopolis, Mr Financia could see that RB Jobbs was in a frenzy – a new plan for introducing currencies to customers was to be in placed soon. Seeing his friend in such busyness, Mr Financia had to offer his hand to help. “I am most glad to be seeing you again my dear friend!” said RB, giving Mr Financia a warm hug. “I am very glad to see you again as well my friend! But I can see you are very busy with the bank’s new promotions coming on. Why not allow me to offer my help to you?” “That is very kind of you friend! Please do. I wouldn’t mind some help,” said RB and off he went, explaining to Mr Financia.

The busyness of the bank’s new promotions had passed but RB also had a new task; to teach his staff about what the World Bank was. Favour and goodness was upon RB as a representative from the World Bank was due to visit his bank. Settling his staff in the meeting room he proceeded to explain in measure. “The World Bank is unlike other banks in that it offers very affordable loans to countries in poverty that need money. The World Bank also lends money to help fight HIV/ Aids and other countries that are severely in debt because of war or natural disasters. An example is when the World Bank commencing operations on June 25, 1946, it approved its first loan on May 9, 1947; $250 million to France for post World War 2 reconstruction. This is just a small example of how banking helps people, not just people from a certain country but people from every country.” “Any questions?” asked RB. RB glanced around the room and continued, “The World Bank is made up of 5 organisations:
45
1. The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) 2. The International Development Association (IDA) 3. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) 4. The Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) 5. The International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) And that wraps up my presentation. Always remember, banking is more than earning money, it is about protecting the ones you love through wise management of resources and money.”
