Photography provides definition. It defines space, time, frame, subject, light and millions of other intangible components. There’s a reason people revert to the old cliché “a picture is worth a thousand words.” But what happens when you try to define a place, a culture, and an experience that can only defy definition? You take a lot of photos. You take more photos than you ever thought you could. And you hope at least one captures how it felt to be there.

New York City is probably one of the most photgenic places on the planet. Relentless, merciless, and soul-stoppingly beautiful, the city provides an incredible backdrop for human interaction. These photos try to expose the relationship and struggle between the millions of people, the patterns they create and are created by, and the places that are a product of layers and layers of meaning.

People, Pattern, Place; They are the basis for our cities and lives.

The Artist I have a passionate love affair with the built environment. This project was a way for me to document and share that love with everyone. I used Kodak 400 TMAX film on a Minolta ST-7 as well as my trusted Canon T3i, Pheobe, to get these shots. I sincerely hope you enjoyed looking at these images as much as I obsessed over taking them.

Yours Forever, jonah pruitt photographer
