of Pacific Arts

Design Project 2011 / Cockatoo Island, Sydney

Design Brief Museum of Pacific Arts

Design Proposal ‘Existence Discovered by Emptiness’ When one stands alone in the expanse of empty space, they yearn to stand in the presence of another being. When something of life and energy is placed in emptiness, silence creeps in and overpowers any eruptions. This design responds to the nature of the existing site ‘Cockatoo Island’ and how it presents itself as a place of absence, devoid of any traffic or explosions of energy. By taking this characteristic of the island and bringing it before the Pacific Arts there is a collision between how absence meets power and life. This difference is what is used for the overarching concept of the design. It involves taking the rich nature of the Pacific Arts and using it to create explosions of spaces in the environment of the deserted island. It is an activation of space in a place devoid of movement and time.

Sports Centre

Technologies Group Project 2011

Design Objective To design a sporting facility which exhibits sustainabile qualities in response to the existing site.

Design Proposal The proposed design is a timber framed sports hall, located in Uhrs Point reserve, Rhodes. The site is situated at the junction of commercial warehouses and parkland in the surrounds of residential dwellings. The heavy residential and industrial context of the site creates an enclosure against the sports centre. The proposal seeks to relieve this tension by giving the structure and the finishes of the building an impression of lightness and fragility. The structural curvature of the roof frames the beauty of the lake. This preserves the richness of the existing site.

With 11 buildings, 3 designed by Johnson Pilton Walker, a collection of shops, cafes, laneways, terraces and offices transform the old Kent Brewery in Chippendale into a remarkable interplay of buildings and public spaces. This vision seeks to raise the benchmark for sustainable living globally. The design brief was to create iconic architecture of the highest sustainable standards, with people at their heart. The masterplan revolves around a spacious urban park at heart with an intricate web of roads and pathways that draw people together.

Johnson Pilton Walker

Johnson Pilton Walker has been appointed by Macquarie Group to take part in the design of it’s new headquaters at 48 Martin Place in Sydney’s CBD. The refurbishment will transform the historic banking chamber into a commercial workspace over 11 levels. The building will undertake a complete refurbishment of building services and systems, internal fit outs, widen the existing atrium, and construct an additional two story glass domed roof with glass shuttle lifts. The vision is to design an iconic workplace that provides connection and flexibility for staff, while preserving the heritage elements of the building, built in 1928. Johnson Pilton Walker has designed the new workspace with a central atrium topped with a new steel frame glass dome to enable natural light to filter through all levels. Internal stairways will be designed to provide greater interconnectivity between employees and the new glass lifts integrated with the heritage marble facades will also be included in the refurbishment.

Design Inspired by the ‘Pill bug’, the Iso-pod chair breaks open into an extendable lounge. The chair locks into different positions as it is opened. This enclosed lounge temporarily separates the individual from their surroundings, creating a personal space of comfort. When closed, the stools from underneath are made useable.

Performance The structure of the chair is made of laminated plywood. The interior is cushioned with high density foam. The black, canvas material is what holds the bones of the structure. It performs as a ligament in between each laminated segment. The flexibility of this material stretches and folds according to the movement of the chair.
