SPONGE SIPHON The combination of a commercial center and a necessary infrastructure, Sponge Siphon provides Tokyo with storm water market, and pedestrian activities. By Connecting to city drainage pipes and
to the adjacent the Tokyo Bay, this intervention siphons storm water into the building. The thick walls contain a series of connected bladders which contract and expand into the pedestrian space: a dynamic experience.

Japan’s dependence on surface water makes the seasonal imbalance of precipitation a prime factor in determining the

requirements of storage infrastructure. Tokyo has the largest demand for fresh surface water in Japan. By containing water that has
fallen between April and October and siphoning it into Sponge Siphon’s storage bladders, the water available to meet demands
do not fall short between November and May. (Right) Pedestrian parks and tour boat docks are newly available amenities.

(CH)AIR (CH)air is a sculpted balloon with walls of painters plastic. When occurs within an interior

tunnel which penetrates the balloon. Once inserted into the tunnel, the individual is separated from his environment by a cushioned
layer of air. Giving form to “personal space�, it creates an abnormal experience for people both inside and outside the balloon. Even
without helium it manages to lift the spirit. It was on display in Motivated Portables an exhibition in Champaign, IL.

PA S S I V E H O U S E Completed in Fall 2011 this residence is one of four Illinois. It features superinsulated walls, an airtight envelope, triple-paned windows, a more than

heating load requirement of less than 4.75 kBtu/ sf/yr (90% less than conventional buildings). I aided architect Katrin Klingenberg in designing
this home for a happy family of two. One of the features of this passive house is the unbroken, continuously insulated envelope. For the foundation slab (Right) we designed and fabricated
a series of interlocking extruded polystyrene blocks that both insulate and provide the formwork for the poured concrete slab.

footage, these apartments answer the need for more one and two person dwellings in Manhattan. Super-insulated envelopes allow for semi-isolated mechanical systems in each unit. The studio pretext of
this project was to design a building with at most 500 square feet. Given my previous work experience on passive homes 1000 square feet or less, I wanted to reveal a way the same design methods
could be applied in a high rise. Technical detailing was therefore given priority after the initial concept was declared. Once the envelope layers were understood, the stacking details had to be designed.

SKYDECK Taking advantage of existing structural capacity in the Detroit-Superior Bridge, Sky Deck hosts a turns Cleveland’s postindustrial infrastructure into a civic asset. It is a concentrated intervention

that reactivates the bridges pedestrian pathway by creating desirable moments beneath and within the structural beauty of the arch. One point of development activates the embedded value of the rest of the bridge.

Due to inadequate storm water retention surrounding NYC’s Gowanus Canal, an infrastructural intervention was needed in an area already occupied by a

answers the need for water retention and public park infrastructure. Water tanks which were previously hidden are brought into the public realm. They are also deconstructed
and rearranged to create a public park with playgrounds, pavilions, pools, and other amenities. By allowing people to inhabit and experience the infrastructure, it
encourages cities to invest in long-term infrastructure development. This project was shown in Water Works: Gowanus By Design an exhibition of the winning entries.
