Make Smart Goals. When approaching a new wayfinding project it’s important to have clear and attainable goals from the start. The first step to developing a great wayfinding system is understanding the need for it. This comes from taking the time to explore the different types of people that will be passing through the area and acknowledging where their needs aren’t currently being met. Once we understand what we need to provide future users, we can then set our goals for the project. This allows us to identify details will need to be included in the design phase.

Leave No Stone Unturned. Similar to understanding the type of people who will be using the environment, you need to gain a really good understanding of the area itself. Before you can begin to tailor a wayfinding system to an environment, you need to understand any specifications that you may need to keep in mind. This is also where any environmental issues and concerns can be acknowledged and addressed.

Create the best Cool, Clear & Consistent. Once you have a good grasp on who’s using the environment and any specific aspects you need to keep in mind, you can begin the design process. During this step, it’s a good idea to keep the ‘Three C’s’ in mind: Cool: the wayfinding system as a whole needs to look cool, that’s what is going to make it stand out to the users. Clear: the main purpose of a wayfinding system is to create clarity throughout the user’s journey - so make it clear! Consistent: consistency throughout the entire wayfinding system is crucial, this is what helps maintain its purpose and clarity.

Test It, then Test Again! When it comes to wayfinding projects, let your inner perfectionist arise. It is important that you ensure that every aspect is going to work in the way you want it to. Going through multiple stages of product testing will allow you to identify any flaws and get them altered before the final installation.

It’s Go Time - Let’s Install. Once you’ve tested the system and are sure it’s been perfectly crafted to suit its environment, you’re then ready to install. Make sure you take time to ensure that all signs and maps are correctly and safely installed with all of the necessary people informed on maintenance and usage.
