LIVESEY STREET REGENERATION This second year project combined modules of social, ecological and planting design into one project. Livesey street sits in the Hillsborough area of Sheffield and has a charcter that has been dictated by its industrial past, resulting in a rather run down street. Well populated because of the large college and stadium that are on the street, the area touches the lives of many people. It was our responsibility to improve that experience.

SOCIAL MODULE The work involved redesigning an area at one end of the street which fronts a main road, as well as the length of the street leading to an old unsued woodland cemetery to attract visitors and those who use the site everyday to explore these spaces. The work here shows how the ‘Hollywood’ sign inspired a similar idea for the frontage of Livesey Street to give the area a different identity to its present one. Extra ‘avenue like’ access was added to make the site more easily accessible around the busy roads.

PLANTING MODULE The module involved a grassy area at the front of the college which served little purpose. My proposal, inspired by the brownfield vegetation found elsewhere on the site, involved producing 2 cross sections in 2 different seasons and a CAD planting plan.

ECOLOGY MODULE This involved producing a plan for the cemetery, dividing spaces into different habitats. The project also looked at how the cemetery would seek to attract more visitors and be more accessible to explore.

MILLHOUSES HOUSING PROJECT

This third year project looked at creating a sustainable housing development inspired by a chosen case study and past precedents. The site, on the southern surburban areas of Sheffield, is the location of an old school and now lies as a derelict 2Ha site next to a main road. My design, looked to create a dense sustainable development with small gardens and larger areas of communal space accessible from every house and flat.

The project required the creation of an axonometric drawing, to try to show the life between the buildings. The axo shows how the communal spaces link together producing a tightly knit community that interact with each other.

CULTURAL (C.I.Q) INDUSTRIES QUARTER DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION The CIQ is a area of Sheffield city centre that has seen better days. A very quiet area of a busy city, the aim was to landscape a temporary car park surrounded by old industrial buildings, to create a culturally focused area of the city that many would flock to. The modules involved a group masterplanning project, an individual detailed design component of an area of this masterplan and a construction component involving autocad. My design area involved a riverside area where dense vegetation planted on a series of terraces provided an idyllic urban location to relax.

Entitiled ‘Sheffield’s Industrial Links’, my detailed design was inspired by Sheffield’s industrial heritage and the importance the railways made in transporting goods. The design therefore represents a railway platform with steps down onto the track which is a cafe area next to the river.

FOREIGN FIELD TRIP COPENHAGEN Part of the autumn semester involved a field trip to our chosen destination of Copenhagen. Part of the work for this required us to look at particular aspect of the city (I chose the ‘life of the square’) and produced a digital portfolio of drawings inspired by this.

My final portfolio was entitled ‘Bringing life to the Urban Square’ and looked at whether it was just people that animated themselves or by conjuring up images of own connections and emotions, they could begin to animate themselves.

I very much enjoyed our trip to Copenhagen which is a city at the forefront of landscape design and planning. Some of the places visited (including the City Dune,Jarmers Plads and the Wave) have given me great inspiration to take forward. The work here is also from the portfolio and looks at using different methods of drawing to express the experiences of these places.

FIRST YEAR WORK

The work on the following few pages shows my work from the first year, which because of my long term desire to study Landscape Architecture, I believe is of a high standard. This involves a design project in a local park, another design project in the arts tower forecourt (shown on this page), a communication module which involved making a sketchup model of Bryant Park and a Landscape Character Assesment.

The Arts Tower forecourt project involved redesigning the car park that is currently situated there and looking for a more student friendly area where students and staff can spend time. Inspired by the vegetation of the Peak District, my design language came from the forms and shape of a piece of bark that saw a raised walkway throughout the space sheltered by large mature trees that protected this windy site.

Our very first project involved looking at a small area of a nearby park. Our idea was to create a feature granite wall that people could interact with that remained the same throughout the year whilst everything around it changed.

Looking at another campus based area, this project looked to provide anaylsis of the space and design options for it to have more public value than the proposed large university buildings that was to be built.

This work formed part of a portfolio of photoshop, illustrator, indesign and photography work that taught us about the value of landscape and ways to communicate information about it. This sketchup model of Bryant Park in New York involved measuring and creating the park and its elements, E.g. the fountain above.

Another of our first year projects involved carrying out a character assessment for the nearby Loxley Valley on the edge of the Peak District. The project involved assessing the different elements of the landscape and then seperating them into different character areas. Shown are a few graphics from the report.

Our planning module in our second year was to create a planning strategy document for an area around the Meadowhall shopping centre. Central to my focus was to re-invigerate the derelict green spaces in the area connecting the nearby residential community with those who worked and visited Meadowhall shopping centre.

Our third year planning module involved producing an LVIA for a proposed drill site in the East Riding of Yorkshire. Located in sparsely vegetated farmland but nearby the heritage site of Burton Constable, I had to assess and predict the likely landscape and visual impact of this development.
