Study Abroad Experience + Exhibitions .11 spring Smart Geometry Workshop+Symposium (Performing Skins Cluster) -Copenhagen, Denmark The Smart Geometry Workshop is an annual conference held at various locales worldwide to investigate and research concepts in digital architecture and design. Participants during the workshop/exhibition/symposium, lasting 6 days are encouraged to research and develop concepts and techniques within digital design to be presented during the final days of the conference. Specifically, the Performing Skins cluster challenges the participants to investigate and fabricate 3-dimensional knitted surfaces with interactive and responsive properties, employing parametric design tools to tailor specific functions to a particular design issue outlined within individual groups. .09 summer Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition-London, England The Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition is the largest open contemporary art exhibition in the world, drawing together a wide range of new work by both established and unknown living artists. Held annually since the Royal Academy’s foundation in 1768, the Summer Exhibition is a unique showcase for art of all styles and media, encompassing painting, sculpture, prints and architectural models. Previously enclosed by a single, vast structure, the masterplan is designed to break the site into smaller, pedestrian blocks. The practice has designed four buildings within the mixed-use scheme, which brings together hotels, offices, apartments, restaurants and shops. Designed to be human-scaled in contrast with the imposing scale that characterizes the surrounding area, the buildings step down from ten storeys at the perimeter of the site to frame a central plaza, a civic focus where the streets and pathways converge. >>Gross External Area (m²) - 84631.9 m² >>535,000ft² - Office buildings with retail >>376,000ft² - Condominium buildings >>Offices - LEED Gold >>Condominiums - LEED Silver

The four-storey, highly transparent building contains dynamic, flexible teaching and social spaces, arranged around an open central courtyard to reinforce the interactive quality of the educational ethos. The building is characterized by its glazed facades that encourage a direct interface between break-out and formal teaching spaces. From Whitney Avenue, two classroom drums and spiral staircases are visible between the slender columns that support the roof canopy, while the social spaces and café are placed at the heart of the building, facing inward to the central courtyard. The auditorium, with an executive meeting room above, defines one curved façade of this landscaped square, directly opposite the library and main entrance. >>Gross External Area (m²) - 20902.5 m²

Jonathan Sim 29 Morgan Court Battersea High Street London, SW11 3HU +44 (0)79 3651 3680 simarchitect@gmail.com Crossrail Retail+Park, Canary Wharf The design is characterized by a landscaped, sheltered park on the roof, easily accessible from ground level by two connecting bridges. Wrapping around the structure like a timber shell, the lattice opens in the centre to draw in light and rain for natural irrigation. Four levels of shops, cafes and amenities will sit above the station, and the park will be bounded at each end by pavilions housing a restaurant and children’s centre. As a winter-garden, the enclosed areas at each end will allow local workers and residents to comfortably enjoy the park all year round. The area around the station will be welcoming and accessible, designed to encourage people to use the new park and shops at the weekend, as well as during the week, and creating a lively new community facility.

The project is intended to expand the clinic’s current facilities to the edges of its 168-acre campus, including establishing a site for a new Neurological Institute and an additional facility for cancer treatment. Raising the quality of the architecture and landscape of the campus is a central concern for the clinic and the scheme will seek to establish a better environment for patients, reflecting the excellence of care offered by the clinic. Established in 1921, Cleveland clinic has grown in several phases, expanding initially from its original building at Euclid Avenue and East 93rd street with a row of traditional, medium scaled, classically inspired hospital buildings. The new masterplan will focus on balancing the needs of patients with the desire to open the campus to the city and fill it with welcoming outdoor spaces.

Following the 1949 design with its stone grid, the façade of the new addition is derived from the same modulation and incorporates a veil of shading screens comprising fine elliptical rods in a bronze finish. The new addition appears to float above the original structure - a lightweight counterpoint to the original Alabama limestone building below. Jonathan Sim 29 Morgan Court Battersea High Street London, SW11 3HU +44 (0)79 3651 3680 simarchitect@gmail.com Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts Following an international design competition, Foster and Partners were selected to work with Lincoln Center on the future development of the 2,738seat Avery Fisher Hall – the concert hall originally designed by Max Abramovitz in 1962, and remodelled by Philip Johnson and John Burgee in 1976. Dedicated to the highest standards of excellence in symphony, opera, chamber music, theatre, dance, film, and arts education, the Centre’s educational programs also host 900,000 students and teachers from across the globe annually. Jonathan Sim 29 Morgan Court Battersea High Street London, SW11 3HU +44 (0)79 3651 3680 simarchitect@gmail.com American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) The AMNH competition provided a scheme for a 10 year 400,000 gsf masterplan which included two options for a new addition to the existing campus during which the museum would remain fully functional. The Science and Education Innovation Centre (SEIC), was requested by the client as either a 150,000 sqft new build or a 85,000 sqft renovation + extension. The particular challenge for the SEIC program included introducing various programs which included Learning, Exhibition, Convening and Laboratory/Research Spaces into a limited site boundary.

The multi-purpose events and exhibitions venue is more akin to an arts centre in its approach than a museum, and will allow everyone, from students and families, to the local business community and tourists, to discover and be inspired by the latest developments in science and technology. The centre is focused on a covered performance space, with an egg-shaped immersion theatre at its heart and will provide a much needed home for science culture in the city, hosting major touring exhibitions as well as lectures, films and artist installations, rather than permanent, static displays. Designs for the centre feature a rooftop sculpture garden, a restaurant and seminar and conference facilities, and a proportion of the scheme will be a commercial office development, suitable for a science or technology firm based in the region. >>Site Area: 0.4 Acres (1,618 sqm/17,424 sqft) >>Existing Built Area: 4,850 sqm (52,204 sqft, >>Total Proposed Area: 4,560 sqm (49,083 sqft)

Currently, this particular project is the research topic for the final studio of my career at the University of Pennsylvania. Due to the research based emphasis for this particular studio, abstract investigations into form development through material studies such as plaster are being employed. The process of balancing form and operation has led to deeper research of programmatic operations that in turn further inform the resultant aesthetic. A negotiation between the space occupied on either sides of the structure becomes a dance of volumetric biases, where the result is an eventual compromise of form and function.

Through research and wind-tunnel simulations in ANSYS-CFX, designs were constantly tested to inform performance and form. The design of this body took into account the stream of frontal forces due to forward movement in space. As a result, the body was sculpted to utilize wind paths by implementing channels moving across the body at strategic points to stabilize the frame. In addition, the design of the core cavity allowed the body to redirect forces within the form thus enabling the body to assist a propulsion system that may be introduced.
