Preface Architecture is the artistic, technical, and philosophical enquiry about how we can best reshape our environment. To me, it is essentially the continual search for the simplest solutions to complex problems regarding our built, natural, and even virtual environments. This portfolio is a collection of my works from the year 2010 until the end of 2012. Its aim is not only to showcase architectural design and technical skill, but also to reveal a constant exploration and experimentation of various graphic media and styles, as well as presentation and layouts. 1 PATHWAYS

This is a scheme for a historical discovery center located on the edge of Herring Island (along the Yarra River). It offers visitors a journey that showcases multiple gallery spaces which reveal the geological, colonial, and contemporary history of the island. Consisting of multiple alternative pathways to explore within the building, and being connected to the pre-existing art gallery makes this scheme the most prominent built feature of the island.

2 ‘ALVARO SIZA’ BOATHOUSE

After having studied the works of the renowned Portugese architect Alvaro Siza, I was asked to design a boathouse in his manner/style. This building is located in Kew, nestled in a remote area with various topographical challenges for design. It features extensive landscaping works for outdoor activities such as picnics and cycling, as well as catering for the people who use the place for kayaking and other water-related activities. Furthermore, this scheme boasts a fairly large restaurant/cafe on the second floor with a glass facade that allows for a high degree of visual connectivity, which is especially great for spectating the water sports.

WYNDHAM GATEWAY As a rapidly growing municipality, Wyndham needed a landmark to foster cultural and architectural discourse and place it on the map! This design is located along the Princes Freeway, and utilises parametric design techniques to create a site-specific sculpture. It is designed as a lightweight steel ‘ruled surface’ structure, the geometry of which represents dynamism and motion. Furthermore, cladding is added, giving the form an extra layer of complexity, and enhancing the qualities of light and shade. This project was done in collaboration with Guang Xu and Qian Chen.

BARLOW MOTORS 2012 This scheme is situated within the tight urban fabric of the CBD in Melbourne, between LaTrobe Street and Victoria Street (the site is highlighted in green on the site plan). This time, I was designing for a fictional wealthy client; Mr. Barlow. As such, my design response had to be extremely sentitive to both the site and the client.

The building’s main purpose is as a car showroom and a car park, with with many other programmatic requirements in the brief. The main concept here is that I’ve created a structural wall (orange in the diagram) that divides two sides of the building into the services and car parking on one side, whilst the other half houses the showroom, café, mini-golf course, bachelor apartment, offices, etc. All floors would then be suspended/cantilevered from this wall, creating a column-less building with a spacious and extravagant feel.

Known as ‘The Gambler’, this mini-golf hazard engages extensively with luck and chance, and appropriate for risktakers such as Mr. Barlow.

As seen from the south elevation, I designed a playful facade on the showroom side that contrasts the two sides of the building, which is analogous to the conflicted personality of Mr Barlow. An exposed car park helps promote passive ventilation and lighting, as well as giving a visual connection from the car park to the rest of the city - something I believe is a significant consideration in urban architecture.

BARLOW MOTORS 2012 Essentially, the planning revolves around the central wall, which groups the services and the car parking together, while the ‘fun’ half stays on the east side. In terms of access into the building; due to the nature of the surrounding streets and urban layout, I decided to also separate vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Cars would come in from the north entrance - either to the car park or the service centre. Meanwhile, the pedestrian public would enter from the south (LaTrobe) side.

There is a third entry; Grant Lane, which is where the foyer exits to, and that is used by the regular staff of the building, as well as people who would like to just park their car and then leave the building.

As part of Architecture Design Studio 1, this esquisse involved the design of details and exploration of the ‘poetics of construction’ in order to create a sun screen that manipulates light and views. The result of this 3-hour esquisse led me to the exploration of the suspension of materials to partially cover an aperture. Exemplified by this model, the concept was that the strings attached to the rectangular pieces would become ‘invisible’, and the elements suspended could gently dance in the wind. I found that these features make the design of the openings very intriguing.

LANDSCAPE SCHEME In Site Tectonics, we learnt about drawing conventions, grading slopes, and environmentally sensitive designs.

The challenge for this brief was to redesign the landscape around this area and position Mies van der Rohe’s renowned Farnsworth House onto a steep slope.

Our goal for this project was to create a park that can provide a diversity of nature’s services for the city and the surrounding urban residents, including: containing and purifying urban storm water; improving the saline-alkali soil through natural processes; recovery of the regional landscape with native vegetation; providing native environmental landscapes and natural systems education, and achieving landscape sustainability and create a cherished aesthetic experience. This project was done in collaboration with Siyu Zhou.

7 REVERSE ENGINEERING

As part of studio, we were asked to reverseengineer a parametrically designed building (No. 9 Hills Place in London) to further learn the techniques. In collaboration with Guang Xu and Qian Chen, this project was a learning experience in the area of digital fabrication and laser cutting.

PARAMETRIC FORM AND FABRICATION Our next exploration of parametric form and digital fabrication using the laser cutter. This design was created with the Wyndham Gateway project in mind (project 3). In this case we also explored the reflective and refractive qualities of perspex as a material.

‘MASS EXPRESSIONISM’ “The opposite of consumerism, is mass expressionism” - The Social Architects, 2023 Consumerism in the 21st century was driven by unprecendented sense of growth and progress... When the discovery of the decline of the c-particle dashed all hopes of this continuing pattern, many turned to fatalism. A group of young artists who called themselves the “Social Architects” emerged to try to fill this cultural void, thus beginning the artistic movement known as ‘mass expressionism’. This is a competition entry for SONA Superstudio in 2011, a 24-hour design competition. In this instance, we responded to the question; “what would architecture look like in a world that was doomed to end in a mere few months?”. Done in collaboration with Qing Ping and Nathan Su, our concept challenged many preconceptions of architecture.

10 ‘OUT THERE’ In 2012, I entered the SONA Superstudio competition once again, this time with Nathan Su and Mia Willemsen. In response to a more complex brief that requested an “act of architecture” for the Venice Biennale, we proposed global connectivity via the use of cameras set-up along Viale Trento in the Biennale Gardens, as well as across the world. These cameras would then stream live footage of any person walking around, making the Venice Biennale a true world event and the centre of attention. For the presentation, we opted to use a simple and quirky graphic style, strung together in a short, uplifting animation aimed to inspire human interconnectivity.


11 BIRDCAGE Every year, ExLab holds a workshop dedicated to learning, with focus on fabrication. In 2012, the BEND workshop introduced me to basic parametric modelling techniques using Rhinoceros and Grasshopper. As a final product, we created a birdcage to explore form and wirebending techniques using the geometric data of each wire profile to bend the wire accordingly. The image on the top left shows the form that I designed and fabricated.

12 TECHNICAL DRAWINGS While most of my design work is done using either Google SketchUp or Rhinoceros, technical drawings were also necessary in some presentations. The drawings in this page were created in AutoCAD and demonstrates a higher degree of detail and annotation, while the next page shows additional drawings done in SketchUp and Illustrator for the purpose of marketing or visualisation.
