Can architecture and urbanism be the same entity?
At the confluence of California’s housing crisis and the impending climate change catastrophe is the topic of suburban development. Ownership of the ground plane in which suburban architecture lives on does not belong to people; it belongs to the automobile. In turn, suburban architecture responds to site conditions centered around automobiles. This is why the built environment here primarily consists of big box stores, massive parking lots, single-family homes, highway exits and stroads. In our housing shortage, suburbia refuses to build much needed denser, mixed-use housing developments. Therefore, suburban architecture and planning are locked in a symbiotic relationship with auto-centrism where one perpetuates the other.
This thesis proposes a new approach to suburban architecture and planning by reclaiming space dedicated to automobile use for humans. Culminating in the design of Stoneridge Station - a microcosm of the large and small scale interventions we will use to transition to an autoindependent, greener, walkable and bikeable future.
Stoneridge Station is a train station, served by high speed and standard mainline rail, as well as local and regional rail and bus transit.
The strategy is to design a building that is also it’s own neighborhood. The Stoneridge Bourough is dense walkable neighborhood in the rapidly growing Tri-Valley area, east of San Francisco and Oakland in California, where a train station happens to be located. By allowing the roof to merge with the ground plane and turning it into a space for mixed-use developments, the station returns its building footprint to the community, and in turn,
This is part of a larger intervention to convert auto-centric Bay Area suburbs into walkable transit oriented communities.

7 new lines, 5 line extensions, and a brand new regional service for BART, comes along side Stoneridge Station.
Stoneridge Station’s location was chosen because of it’s geographic and socioeconomic resilience. Unlike many neighborhoods in the core of the East Bay, which are lower income and tend to be communities of color, upper middle class communities such as Pleasanton and Dublin are vastly less vulnerable to disruptions caused by a major transit construction project.
To ensure that the rest of the East bay is provided equitable access to Stoneridge’s transit services, a massive expansion to BART’s network is proposed. Along with the expansion of BART’s existing rapid transit network, comes a new regional rail network. BAREX, (short for Bay Area Regional EXpress), throughruns onto BART’s existing network, extending rail service to the outer counties surrounding the Bay Area. This is made possible by utilizing underused or abandoned rail right-of-ways, dual-gauge gauntlet tracks, compatible rolling stock, CBTC signaling, and network consolidation.

This is a project in San Francisco’s Mission Bay Neighborhood for a mixed-use athletics and housing facility. The primary interest is in how water systems can produce an architectural and urban quality. As the name Steel Treehouse implies, is a conceived as sets of housing units held up by steel “branches” which are woven together to form a series of vessels sitting atop a green podium. Like a tree, these vessels are the structural members, which also transfer water vertically.
The building strategy revolves around a set of courtyards atop a concrete podium which rises with the grade of the stepped plaza until it is above grade. At ground level, it hosts commercial spaces as well the main water storage area for the building. Above the podium, there is a green park-like area containing playing fields, and gathering spaces. Further above are a series of floating masses that contain residential units. The roof is a green roof with more social spaces and more playing fields.
The courtyards are produced through the aggregation of structural members which bear the load of the several masses. They allow the masses to cantilever from a single point while retaining a hollowed core for the courtyard. On each of the roofs, the members suspend a cantilever spar cable-stayed canopy that funnels rainwater and diverts it into the courtyard for collection. Additionally, the courtyards provide ventilation and lighting to the upper residential units. The floor slabs at the periphery of the courtyards contain soils and grass, producing a bioswale. Gray water is filtered through these soiled areas as it passes downwards through each floor into the storage unit on its way to the water treatment facilities.

SHIFT
The city of Oakland is rich in ethnic and cultural diversity. However, when we map the income levels of these neighborhoods, we find that this diversity is intersected by a class divide that lands most of the city’s minority ethnic com munities into the lower rungs of the economic ladder.
Our primary interest is in generating a community center that doubles as an educational facility. This resulted in the generation of what we’ve nicknamed the Gastrotheque (“gastrotheque” being a combination of the French words gastronomie and bibliothèque). This building is situated on the two blocks between Clay and Washington from 7th Street to 9th Street and contains both a community center and a culinary school run as a satellite campus for Laney College’s Culinary Arts Program.

STRATEGY DIAGRAM
The spatial strategy of the Gastrotheque is predicated on the goal of transitioning away from traditional understandings of space making and circulation- parti walls, corridors, and staircases.
9TH STREET 2ND FLOOR 9TH STREET 3RD FLOOR +ROOF 9TH STREET GROUND LEVEL
It is generated by the tectonic shifting of surface planes. This is used to achieve various spatial effects that could not exist with conventional orthogonal geometric forms. This allows the building’s circulation to be less limited by rigidly defined corridors and stairs andfor the spaces to feel more interconnected. One does not feel as if they are traveling from one rigidly defined space to another. 22

7TH STREET - CULINARY SCHOOL
8TH STREET - SKYBRIDGE + PLAZA
9TH STREET - COMMUNITY CENTER
The cullinary school sits on 7th street. 7th street is a relatively unlively street. It’s pedestrian foot traffic is typically fairly low, which is perfect for the culinary school here. Students desire a low-distraction, high-privacy area for studying and learning.
8th street is home to a plaza reclaimed from the street. Here, only pedestrians, cyclists and service vehicles may pass. It hosts a restaurant, a cafe and an overhead skybridge linking the culinary school with the community center.
On 9th street sits the community center. 9th street is very busy and its mixed-use zoned. This setting is perfect for the community center which wants to be accessible to heavy pedestrian traffic volumes on the street.
