Hello Readers,
73
If this isn’t for you – and you’d rather keep the party going – then there are more delights in store. You have our permission to keep eating out at places like Patshull Park Hotel, The French Connection and Bravaccio’s; to read all about the good life at Halfpenny Green Vineyards in our Meet The Boss feature; and the elegant prospect of enjoying Afternoon Tea at Himley Hall – or maybe more? Especially if there are wedding plans afoot? It is a Leap Year after all, Ladies.
After much hullabaloo Christmas is now behind us – not a lot now remains of it beyond the customary surplus of everyone’s least favourite Quality Street chocolate, unopened boxes of mince pies and runaway pine needles. You’ve probably had just about enough “family time” to last you until Christmas 2016 and feel fatter than the Turkey you’ve just finished eating.
Always a popular date on the calendar, St Valentine’s Day is an occasion that has its origins shrouded in mystery and speculation, according to our featured story. It is for romantics a golden opportunity to spoil their loved ones – so why not shop with a view to doing just that with some of the excellent January sales extravaganzas on offer from nearly every one of our advertisers.
Your thoughts will naturally turn towards toning up and feeling fit once more. Your New Year’s Resolution may be to do just that – if it is, we have much goodness concerning your health, beauty and fitness concerns. There’s an article on how to break your bad grooming habits; notes on beauty and hairdressing from Wollaston Beauty Salon and Capelli Hairdressing; and an article on South Staffordshire Leisure Centres facilities. We even have tips on how to stick to your New Year’s Resolution itself – that’s if you haven’t broken it already!
See you in March!

New Year’s
R es o l u ti o ns Did you know that people have been making (and breaking) New Year’s Resolutions for more than 4,000 years? Some historians believe that the practice dates back to the Babylonians. Their New Year began in springtime, with a festival dedicated to the rebirth of the sun god, Marduk. The Babylonians believed that making promises to the gods would help them start their New Year off on a positive note. The Romans kept the tradition up, although they changed the date of the New Year to January 1st. These days, New Year’s Resolutions tend to focus on self-improvement, whether it’s eating healthier, quitting smoking, or getting a new job. Millions of us make a resolution each year, but only 1 in 04
10 people stick to it. If your resolve is already wavering, here are a few tips to help you stay strong: Write it down. Writing down a goal and reviewing it regularly improves your chances of success by up to 95%! Involve other people. Tell people what your aim is, and ask them to help. Will your partner join you on your healthy eating mission? Do you know someone who fancies going jogging with you? Have a plan - A goal isn’t enough; you need to know how you’re going to get there. Resolving to exercise more? How many times a week are you going to work out? What combination of exercise are you planning to do? Do you need to get anything in place to help you achieve your goal, such as a new tyre for your bike?
Break your goal into smaller ones - So you want to lose two stone by your summer holiday. How many pounds do you want to lose this fortnight? Remind yourself why you’re doing it - Do you want to make more money so that you can buy a house? Do you want to be healthier so that you can watch your kids grow up? Make it pleasurable - There are usually more ways than one to reach a goal. You don’t have to join a gym to get fit, for example; you could take up a dance class, or try karate. Keep track of your progress Create a spreadsheet, download an app, or just celebrate each small success on Facebook. Give yourself rewards along the way - Save the money you’d normally spend on cigarettes or chocolate and treat yourself with it at each small milestone. Get back on the wagon - We’re only human, so we all slip up sometimes. One fry-up doesn’t mean you also have to skip the gym. Think about why you slipped and consider how you can stop it happening again. Good luck!

Youth Gone Wild:
All Hail Halesowen By Rob Taylor
So off we go to visit the town, which is – for younger readers (just on the off chance) in the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley, around seven miles south-west of Birmingham. I begin our journey with a long rambling monologue:
“In the 11th Century the Manor of Hala was larger than Birmingham. It was given by Henry II to Prince David Owen of Wales and thus became Halesowen. In the 18th Century nail-making, first in backyards and then in the town’s iron foundries really put the town on the map. Then by 1919 the area had over 130 coal mines….
When it comes to my conversations with today’s youth, it never ceases to amaze me quite how insular there existence seems to be. We live in a global age where information specific to every far-flung corner of the planet is freely and readily available by a mere tappa-tappa-tappa on a smartphone screen; younger generations are devout in their unyielding worship at the altar of technology, familiar with all various modern day modes of information gathering and sharing, therefore it is they who ought to be most knowledgeable, but they aren’t.
I can see his interest waning so I change tack: to see, firstly, the Cornbow Shopping Centre. The Centre, previously known as ‘The Precinct’, was built in 1967. Much modernisation has taken place since then, with at first particular attention being paid to rejig the infamously off-putting dark and menacing link-tunnel between the centre and the adjacent multi-storey car park. For us it provides much-needed rest bite from the icy cold snap outside – this was an impromptu trip, after all.
They seem to be invested neither globally not locally. They watch neither News at Ten nor Midlands Today; read neither The Guardian nor the Express & Star and as such seem happy to exist in their own virtual pond; it’s as if they have in some part managed to upload their lives and consciousness into cyberspace, leaving behind only a sack of meat and bone. Our concerns are not their concerns. They matter; their friends matter; not a lot else seems to. And this criticism isn’t levelled unfairly at every sub-20year-old I’ve ever spoken to on matters relating to subjects other than celebrity, music and Facebook because my nephew is not ignorant on current affairs and does know the capital city of Turkey; the Prime Minister of Australia; and the currency of Yemen. He follows the news – local, national, international – avidly, but still on occasion I’m surprised by gaps in his local awareness. Just now he enquired as to where exactly the subject of this article – Halesowen – is and quickly followed with the zinger: “and who wants to read about that place anyway?!”
So then, thinking on the fly, I hit upon the idea of taking us to Teamworks Karting Halesowen on Dudley Road. With its fly-over bridge and tunnel this indoor Go-karting circuit has everything I’m looking for to help show off what our local area really has to offer. And success! Throughout the event I see him regress into a pre-pubescent state of being, where experiencing stimuli in three dimensions – forget 3D TV – matters more than sadly observing everything through the lens of a camera-phone and then posting it later on Youtube to broadcast that he was there. Now that’s progress.
Now firstly he gets points for articulating his query in the time-honoured tradition of using language and not today’s antisocial technique of Googling the answer in 0.3 seconds, but mostly his exclamation just makes me gloomy when I realise that precisely zero people under a certain age will be reading this. Yet rather than roll my eyes and accept the status quo I do instead spring forth from my computer screen and abruptly insist that he should right this very afternoon make himself available to participate in the physical sphere, to visit Halesowen itself. And after much persuading he does. 08

Christmas star shines
on Kinver
This year Kinver’s big Christmas tree shone particularly brightly over the village thanks to a large star sitting resplendent at its peak. The star and tree burst into light during the annual Big Tree switch-on in November, when crowds descended on the High Street to celebrate the start of the Christmas festivities. The evening kicked off with a performance by The Rock Choir, who gave a great rendition of some well-known songs and created an atmosphere of warmth and celebration – a perfect antidote to the rather inclement weather! The Choir braved the rain and delivered a full programme of music, sheltering in the interval in the warmth of The White Harte, who generously provided hospitality.
counting down to the lights switchon. Santa then spent some time meeting the children, while parents and others enjoyed food and drink being sold by stalls and shops throughout the village. Village shops opened late especially for the event and did brisk trade, as shoppers sought something different for their Christmas present lists. An important attraction at the event was the no lose tombola, which was supported with donations from many village businesses, with every penny raised from the stall helping
to buy the Big Tree. Organiser June Dillow said: “This year we raised over £250 on the stall and a competition to guess the name of the very large teddy helped swell the coffers. We can announce that Humphrey the bear was won by Sue Pratt of Kinver.” (We hear Humphrey has found a good home with her granddaughter). The Big Tree, which was donated by Kinver Country Fayre, and the smaller trees along the High Street, provided by Kinver Parish Council, continued to twinkle brightly at the heart of the village throughout the 2015 festive season.
Despite the rain, many families came into the village with little children eagerly awaiting the appearance of Santa. And on cue, the special guest duly arrived, transported through the crowds on Kinver Rotary’s colourful sleigh and going on to do the honours by 12

SHOULD YOU BORROW MONEY
IN YOUR RETIREMENT? From reading my articles in this and other magazines over the last twelve months you will be aware that there have been more changes of consequence in and around pensions over the last year than in the previous twenty put together.
The Budget of 2014, the so called “Lamborghini Budget”, changed retirement completely and for many retirement is now funded entirely differently. For some over 55’s pensions became just another asset that could be accessed whenever. The other major asset held by many was their house and in the same way a proportion of people
wanted to access the money they had tied up in this asset. Public opinion concerning pensions and borrowing into retirement has also changed.
According to recent research carried out by the company More2Life, today 2 out of 3 people over 55 want to see lenders launch special deals for retired couples. Nearly 2/3rds of those over 55 would welcome the ability to borrow in retirement if they needed to. There are further statistics which provide food for thought:28% of all UK households are over the age of 55. There are 4.7 million households in the UK owned by over 65’s 57% of over 55’s have applied for credit in the last 2 years. And yet a considerable number of these are excluded from mainstream lending simply by virtue of their age. For many Equity Release was a” nono” but nowadays many are starting to
14

look upon it in a new light with the advent of flexible lending products for those over 55 in or approaching retirement. Through Equity Release over 55’s now have access to a large range of products to meet a variety of needs. People may want to borrow money into retirement for a number of reasons, in many instances more than one reason such as: 1. to repay existing unsecured debt 2. to pay off an interest only mortgage 3. to fund home improvements 4. to help boost income in retirement 5. to fund a once in a lifetime holiday There are 2 types of Equity Release and these are as follows:
from an adviser with the relevant qualifications and experience. Midland Independent Financial Services has been awarded Chartered status by the Chartered Insurance Institute which is the highest accolade that can be awarded to a Financial Services Company and John Webb, Managing Director, is a Fellow of The Personal Finance Society which is the highest award to an individual. Midland Independent is directly authorised by The Financial Conduct Authority and is fully authorised to advise on lifetime mortgages. This is a lifetime mortgage to understand the features and risks please ask for a personalised illustration.
Home Reversion Plans With a home reversion plan you transfer a pre-determined amount of equity to the company and pay in essence a peppercorn rent. Once transferred the property no longer belongs to you and on your death the property is owned by the company.
Lifetime Mortgages A Lifetime Mortgage is where a mortgage is secured on your property provided it is your main residence. Ownership is retained by you and you can choose to make repayments to cover the interest if you wish or simply roll up the interest. The percentage loan to value will depend on the age of the borrower and the loan is repaid when the borrower dies or goes into long term care. The process is now quite simple but before taking any action it is vital that four vital rules are followed: Firstly, always use any savings/ investments before considering Equity Release (always retain an emergency fund). Secondly, never borrow any more than is required. Thirdly, always discuss the matter with a relative or close friend. Finally, and most importantly, always seek professional advice www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

Woodrobes 2 0 1 6
Sandra, Julia, Dave, Ashley and Les
Kidderminster-based bespoke bedroom furniture manufacturer Woodrobes has plenty to celebrate. 2015 was a terrific year but the next 12 months holds the promise of even better prospects for this long-established company as both staff numbers and product range are expanding considerably. Entering its 36th year of supplying high quality fitted bedroom furniture the company has undergone many changes along the way but since moving to its Mill Street location three years ago, the Woodrobes showroom has really caught the eye of customers both existing and new. The showroom is constantly changing with displays that showcase the latest styles, designs and colours, leaving customers truly spoiled for choice. The 2016 brochure has an additional three styles of furniture; Kendal, Linear and San Marino, added to the existing 24 styles, giving an exceptional choice of styles alone.
enhanced the team and from January they will be joined by Les Wood as Branch Manager. Les has many years of practical experience in the fitted furniture industry and will bring a wealth of technical knowledge to the showroom and will be visiting customers in their homes for the initial consultation. Completing the team is Dave the fitter who puts together the jigsaw of pieces to create stunning bespoke bedrooms with a wow factor that leaves each and every customer truly impressed with the quality of his workmanship. Woodrobes also manufactures its own range of sliding wardrobe doors and this range has also seen additions in the last few months. The introduction of the ‘Champagne’ finish has really caught the imagination of customers and
is proving to be one of the most popular of the five finishes available. The showroom has benefitted from these latest introductions and in addition to the bedrooms on display, a new home-office area is being created due to increased demand for unique workplace settings for the home. A visit to the showroom on Mill Street Kidderminster will not leave you disappointed. The quality and range of products and extensive knowledge of the staff will leave a lasting impression as will the 2016 brochure and website, both of which contain a huge amount of information. Woodrobes welcomes visitors to its showroom where brochures and samples are available on request but before you go take the time to browse the extensive website at www.woodrobes.co.uk
Add to that the eight new vinyl colours that have expanded the range to 72 different finishes, colours and patterns, then the possible combinations are truly bewildering. This is where the experience and know-how of the Woodrobes frontline showroom staff becomes apparent. Sandra and Ashley have been joined in the showroom by Julia, who has certainly 16

A Good Read
Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins Praise for this novel, first published at the beginning of 2015, has spread like wildfire and it has become THE book to read. So just in case you are one of the few that hasn’t succumbed to this thriller, why should you pick it up? Whether you are a regular commuter, like the central character Rachel, or not, you will easily be able to identify with the opening section. How many times have you sat on a train and looked out of the window into the garden or kitchen windows of the houses that back onto the tracks, as you speed past on your way to your final destination.? As you catch glimpses into a life that you don’t know, do you wonder about the people that occupy those houses? Rachel doesn’t have to wonder. She passes familiar houses every
day and purposefully looks for Jess and Jason, a young professional couple who live a perfect life. She knows them and is in many ways envious of their relationship. Seeing them in their garden is a moment of comfort as her own life is falling apart. But is all as it seems? On one day, as the train slows down at a signal by the house, Rachel notices that something is amiss. Suddenly she is sucked into a nightmare that seems destined to reveal everything, and that will shock you as her commuter journey turns out to be anything but normal. It’s a small world, but when that world comes crashing down around you, it becomes all too clear that this small world is a lot smaller than you first thought.

Creating the perfect
period bathroom
There’s nothing like a recommendation from a family member who is thoroughly satisfied, so when Amanda and Robert were looking for a new bathroom, they listened to Amanda’s brother, who had been delighted with the products and service he’d received a while back. They were looking to remove a small shower room, and turn it into a study off their bedroom and as they really wanted the use of a bath, a bedroom would become the bathroom. They knew this would necessitate swapping rooms around upstairs, but felt this was a sacrifice worth making. After a visit to Roman Bathrooms, and chatting to Caroline, plans were drawn up, and a survey undertaken. “We had a bedroom with a frosted window,” says Amanda. “I reckon it had once been used as a bathroom, so it made sense to re-locate things www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk
there. But first the company had to check that the joists were suitable, and the existing outflow feasible to put a bathroom in.” Plans were given the go-ahead, the bathroom design finalised, and the products then chosen. The couple live in an Arts & Crafts house, so were keen to incorporate as many period features and ‘looks’ as possible.
Work ran exactly according to proposed timings, and was performed in stages, and just a few weeks later, the couple had their new bathroom. “We’re delighted,” says Amanda. “It’s even better than we’d imagined. The shower is so powerful, and the room looks beautiful. Caroline and her team were hugely knowledgeable and helpful – my brother’s recommendation was spot on!”

grate the walnuts, stem ginger and carrots and then fold into the cake batter with the whisky soaked raisins and a dash of the whisky. Pour into your 9” greased and lined tin - I use Alan Silverwood Anodised tins as they distribute the heat more evenly when baking. (Wash by hand, don’t put them in the dishwasher). 3. Bake in the oven on the middle shelf for about an hour then allow to cool in the tin for a while until turning out onto a cooling rack. Whilst this is cooling you can make your butter cream. 4. Using the magi mix, clean the bowl out and fit the blade attachment. Pour in the icing sugar and butter and blitz until the mix comes together as a smooth paste, add in a little vanilla and add half of the ground mace. Now that the sponge has cooled completely slice across the middle with a cake wire or a long pastry knife. I find it easier to chill the sponge first before cutting so it’s a little less crumbly. Now spread the butter cream across the middle of the cake, as much as you like but you do need to save some for the outside. I like to completely cover my cake with buttercream on the outside but that’s up to you. Top with the chopped dried apricots, roasted nuts and seeds then dust with a little of the ground mace and icing sugar. Serving suggestion Serve this with an espresso or whatever your favourite hot beverage is.

Leap Year It is to Julius Ceasar that we owe the existence of the Leap Year.
He it was who, in 46BC, reformed the old Roman calendar adding one extra day every fourth year to take account of the fact that the Earth took 365 days and 6 hours to circle the sun. This was done by doubling the sixth day before the Calends of March. This year was called bisextile. As every schoolboy (and girl) probably knows, you can determine if a year is a Leap Year by dividing it by four. However, things are not as simple as that.In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII further adjusted the calendar taking into account the fact that even Caesar’s calculations were somewhat out. By Gregory’s calculations, years divisible by 100 did not qualify, so ‘century leap years’ were disregarded, which is why, although 1896 was a leap year, 1900 was not. However the plot thickens. Even this adjustment was insufficient to bring the calendar accurately into line with the facts of astronomy. Gregory further declared that ‘century leap years’ that were divisible by 400 could qualify for the extra day. Hence the year 2000, beginning of the new millennium,
24
was a leap year. This rule means that only comparatively few ‘new century years’ can be leap years - after 2000, the next one will not occur until the year 2400 .
This adjustment of the calendar was not universally accepted by the then civilised world. Britain in fact refused to countenance it until 1752, by which time the error had mounted to eleven whole days. At a stroke, the 3rd September 1752 became the 14th September, and caused riots amongst the populace convinced they had had their lives commensurately shortened. There was even a popular song written called, “Give us back our eleven days” Russia was even more resistant and didn’t accept the change until the October revolution of 1917. The name ‘Leap Year’ is thought to have derived from the fact that the intercalary (extra) day, called ‘bisextus’ or ‘Leap Day’ that is added to the month (February), is not simply pushed on one day of the week as in other years, but leaps over one day additional!
One tradition that has endured for many hundreds of years
and which is still occasionally practised is that governing marriage proposals. It has long been permitted for the lady to ‘pop the question’ on February 29th. There are stipulations however. Traditionally she should wear a red flannel petticoat to advertise what she has in mind and should carry an open fan. The man of course, does not have to accept but, if he refuses, he has traditionally been expected to pay over a forfeit. This varies depending on the part of the country involved and can range from £10 to a pair of fine, white kid gloves. Some authorities maintain that promises made on Leap Day must be kept if the maker of the promise doesn’t wish to fall victim to something extremely nasty before the next Leap Day. However, secrets told on this day need not be kept - unless of course, a promise is involved. You have been warned!
There have been many odd beliefs and customs built around Leap Years. February 29th is said to be a very bad day on which to send love letters. However, quarrels made up and apologies offered on this day should tie the contenders as friends for life.

Brilliant bathrooms at Brierley Hill Bathrooms Whether you want your bathroom to be a haven of relaxation or simply a well-designed functional space, there’s no doubt that you’ll find the design that’s perfect for you at Brierley Hill Bath Warehouse. Established over twenty years ago, the business - that’s based close to both the Merry Hill Centre and Dudley town centre - has long been supplying and fitting bathrooms across the local area. Meeting the needs of both domestic and commercial clients alike, Brierley Hill Bath Warehouse has established a loyal client base and built an excellent reputation in the industry over the years. From an impressive showroom, that’s complete with products from leading brands like Simpsons, Clearwater and RAK Ceramics, the team are able to offer their customers an extensive range of suites that suit all budgets. Owner, Alec Price explains: “We’ve got something for every budget - whether it’s £3,000 or £34,000. There’s plenty of fitted bathroom furniture to take a look at in our showroom, as well as shower cubicles of all different sizes, and lots of bathroom accessories.” As well as selling direct from their showroom, Alec and his team offer a full design and fitting service for clients.
“Our team of expert fitters take care of all aspects of installation, from stripping out the old bathroom to plastering, tiling and of course, installing the new suite.” On average the fitting process takes between one and two weeks: “With one fitter the job will usually take two weeks to complete or with two fitters working the time frame can usually be halved to one week.” All of Brierley Hill Bath Warehouse’s fitters are highly skilled and experienced and complete every job to only the highest standards.
“We ensure excellent standards in everything we do and customer satisfaction is really important to us. Unlike many other businesses we don’t ask for any deposits upfront, we ask that our customers pay when the job is complete.” The company also has a unique safety treatment that will guard against any slips in the shower. “Some shower trays, baths and tiles can be extremely slippery, that’s why we have our Slip Not treatment available for those who are concerned about themselves or a relative having a fall in the shower.” Slip Not treatments can be used on any new or existing bath or shower tray in your home and are virtually invisible. When applied to a shower tray, bath or floor tiles, the Slip Not treatment provides a protective layer that helps to reduce the risk of injury from slips and falls. “We have done many Slip Not treatments in private homes as well as businesses, like retirement and nursing homes, schools, hotels and clinics.” So, whether you’re looking to find out more about protecting your loved ones in the shower or treating yourself to a brand new bathroom, Brierley Hill Bathrooms has got it all.

Stourbridge
RFC
The highlight of pre New Year activity at Stourton Park was Saturday December 5th. Over 150 ladies and gentlemen club members dined prior to the 1st XV fixture featuring third placed Stourbridge and fourth placed Otley who had made the long journey south from North Yorkshire. The lunch was held in honour of the 50th Anniversary of the opening of the club house. Ten members of the team that played Moseley in that inaugural match were invited as special guests. They were each presented with a club tie, and a commemorative cut glass, engraved whisky tumbler. As a very special honour each of the team was endowed with Honorary Life Membership of the club. The weekend before Christmas featured the local derby against our geographically nearest neighbours Luctonians from Kingsland. That was the fifteenth
game of the season, with a further fifteen to play in the New Year and some 75 points maximum to target. Off the field the customary Turkey Supper was held on December 18th. The Breakfast with Santa Sunday feast was enjoyed by over 100 of the youngest children in the club. Vicki Waterfield and Mini and Junior Social Secretary Helen Boaler headed up a team who staged the Christmas Fayre on December 6th. All of this was intermingled with successive office Christmas parties booked by club sponsors. There is extensive activity building up to the May Corporate Lunch held annually in the 900 head capacity marquee booked for May 6th, followed by the Annual Ball on Saturday 7th of May. Already Nigel Owens, the Welsh referee who officiated at the Rugby World Cup Final is the lead speaker alongside renowned Scottish Rugby correspondent Ian Robertson, well known for his commentary on Johnny Wilkinson’s drop goal in the 2003 World Cup Final. At the time of writing two other leading sporting personalities await confirmation. Invitations will be sent out during January. This is always the highlight of the club’s social calendar attracting businesses from throughout the Midlands and beyond and committed spnsors. The Six Nations Tournament kicks off on the first weekend in February with France v Italy and The Calcutta Cup at Murrayfield on the Saturday and Ireland v Wales on the Sunday. The ever popular Ladies Lunch goes from strength to strength with the theme for January’s event being “Behind the scenes at the Antiques Roadshow” and a Comedy Night has been organised for January 22nd, followed by a lunch for Mary Stevens Hospice on February 5th. On the subject of local Charities club members have added to the £3000 raised for The County Air Ambulance by foregoing sending Christmas Cards and making donations instead.

W o lverhampt o n F i r e p l ac e s & S to v e s If you’re looking to find the perfect fireplace or stove for your home this winter then pay a visit to Wolverhampton Fireplaces & Stoves Ltd.
Company Director, Steve Field explains: “We opened our doors at Chapel Ash a decade ago on the 27th December 2005, since then we’ve increased our turnover year on year despite economic downturn and recession.”
The family-run company, that’s based in Chapel Ash, has just celebrated its 10th year in business. Known for their vast selection of fireplaces and stoves - as well as excellent customer service - it’s no surprise that the company has gone from strength to strength over the years.
The team attributes their ongoing success to their commitment to excellent customer service. “We use our many years of experience in the industry to guide and advise our customers so that they can find the fireplace or stove that’s perfect for them.” And Steve does indeed have vast industry experience: “I started in business back in 1982 when I set up my first fireplace showroom in Walsall Wood. After working at the showroom with my family for many years, I left to open our Stafford branch in 1999.” The Stafford business grew rapidly and Steve
was soon taking on extra staff and expanding his showroom. “The company continued to be successful over the years and really began to flourish when my son, Richard, joined in 2001 after gaining great results in his A-Levels.” Richard wanted to grow the company - by opening another branch - and was instrumental in expanding their range to include multi-fuel stoves. The Stafford showroom now boasts over 100 live displays, as well as solid fuel stoves. “After a few years at Stafford we decided to expand and opened our sister showroom in Chapel Ash.” Both showrooms have proved to be extremely successful and business has never been better: “We’re expecting 2016 to be a record year for both branches.” To celebrate the company’s ongoing success and to mark Wolverhampton branch’s 10th birthday, the team will be running special offers across the whole range in store from the 27th December.

Furniture trends for 2016 Get inspired with our summary of new trends on the interiors front for 2016. We have put together some of the most exciting furniture trends for this coming year.
The dining room revival Spurred on by foodie blogs and the rise of celebrity chefs and TV programs like Great British Bake Off and Master Chef, more people are cooking and entertaining at home, with a welcome comeback of the dining room as a result. The 2016 dining room isn’t necessarily a formal affair; there are currently lots of quirky designs available for a more personal touch.
The dining room revival - Menton dining collection
Scandi style The Scandinavians have already wowed us with their Nordic Noir dramas, as well as their fashion and food. And now Scandi design is finding its way into our homes. This clean, minimalist style is characterised by functionality, beautiful craftsmanship and natural materials. What is not to like?
Scandi style - Biba fabric sofa collection
A statement chair As a quirky accent in the living room, or on its own for a cosy place to snuggle up with your favourite book, the statement chair is on the up. A favourite armchair is a very personal choice so anything goes; the only rules are that it has got to be comfy, and it has got to be super stylish.
Boutique style Create the look of a boutique hotel at home. This dramatic look is made up of a clever mix of classic and contemporary designs, oversized accessories, theatrical lighting, plush fabrics and the odd splash of leather.
Scandi style - Lorraine leather chesterfield sofa
Industrial chic The industrial look is still going strong during 2016. Heart of the matter...
DCM is characterised by two phases, a long and ‘silent’ preclinical or early phase where the dog will appear normal and healthy and then a shorter clinical phase, i.e. heart failure, when the dog appears ill. The preclinical phase is important because although your pet may look healthy, the changes of heart disease have already begun. Unfortunately, once clinical signs are noted, the disease tends to progress quickly. The good news is that if DCM is detected in the preclinical or early phase, there are options for managing this condition in some dogs before they progress to heart failure. Closer monitoring will also allow early identification of the onset of heart failure, permitting early intervention with treatment.
How do I recognise DCM in my dog? In the preclinical phase of DCM your dog will generally look and act happy and healthy. Because this disease is silent, it is recommended that if you have a large breed dog (20Kg or over) that is three years old or older, you should talk to your veterinary surgeon about keeping a close eye on his/her heart health.
With Valentine’s day on the horizon we turn to matters of the heart this month. We interviewed Girish Thakral MRCVS BVSc AH Cert VC in Veterinary Cardiology. Girish is based at Blacks Vets Dudley Hospital and is one of the busiest Veterinary Cardiologists in the Midlands.
Changed breathing pattern
Heart disease in large breed dogs Did you know that large breed dogs can be at risk of heart disease? In fact, about 10% of dogs can be affected and the most common form in large dogs is called Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM).
Although many dogs with preclinical DCM show no signs of the disease, some dogs will display some very subtle signs that can be an indicator that something is going on below the surface. If you see any of the following, make sure you talk to your vet: Reluctance to exercise Fainting Unexpected or unusual weight loss Decreased appetite Coughing
The importance of regular check-ups As preclinical DCM is generally silent, heart screening is required to detect it. Diagnosing DCM early enables your vet to institute an optimal management programme, which can help to extend your dog’s life. It is advised that at risk dogs (i.e. large breed dogs over 20kg and over 3 years old) undergo regular heart screening.
About DCM DCM is a disease that affects the heart muscle and its ability to pump blood around the body. DCM most commonly affects large breed dogs, and certain breeds such as Dobermans, Boxers, Irish Setters, German Shepherds, Great Danes, St Bernards and Irish Wolfhounds are at particular risk of developing the condition. In DCM, the heart muscle gradually becomes weakened and floppy. The heart stretches and enlarges and becomes very inefficient at pumping blood around the body. 48
town & village life magazine | january/february 2016
During heart screening your vet may want to run one or more tests, including:
Suggest a treatment regimen, if appropriate
Blood tests – to check specific heart-related markers Chest X-rays – to assess the size of your dog’s heart ECG – this checks the electrical rhythm of your dog’s heart and identifies any abnormality. Heart scan (echocardiogram) – this is an ultrasound examination of the heart and is used to examine the heart in detail. It is important to choose a Veterinary Cardiologist who is experienced enough to detect subtle changes in the heart in the early stages of the heart disease. Regular screening is key to protecting the hearts of at-risk dogs. A dog may not have diagnosable preclinical DCM at one checkup, but may go on to develop preclinical DCM at a later date.
Next steps
Recommend re-screening, normally a year later Your vet will discuss the appropriate plan of action.
Conclusion Remember, heart disease can develop in at-risk dogs even when they seem happy and healthy. Acting early can help extend your dog’s life, please call us on 01384 252509 today to arrange an appointment for heart screening to detect any early signs or put your mind at rest.
Last but not least at this time of year, remember to keep anti freeze out of reach of cats and dogs, make sure rabbits and guinea pigs are warm enough and get those running shoes on with your dog to get fit in 2016! Happy New Year everyone
Girish.

Lealans Time to look forward atGarden
to the coming year Centre
Tips are provided by Ann Winwood, Lealans Garden Centre, Wolverhampton
As we leave Christmas behind and begin a new year it’s time to get the catalogues out and start to plan for the coming season. Many of the seed companies are highlighting different ranges of vegetables for 2016. Thompson and Morgan have a great range of pepper and chilli seeds available in garden centres. Mr Fothergills have a range of tomatoes – from the small vine type to the large beefsteak. One variety that won’t be available for the foreseeable future is the Kelsea Onion, unfortunately a hail storm when the plants where in flower ruined the crop. Seed Potatoes arrive in January; we stock over 45 different varieties. Once you get them home, put them to chit (allow
shoots to form), egg trays are ideal for this, place them in a light, cool and frost free environment. Remember you can start seed potatoes growing in pots inside as early as you like, so long as they are protected from any frosts we may have.
Also put a grease band around the trunk of the tree, this can be kept on all year round to catch any pests climbing up the tree.
If the weathers fine and frost free, get out into the garden to burn off those extra pounds gained over Christmas by finishing any clearing up jobs that weren’t done at the end of 2015, especially tidying up leaves and debris. This will help to prevent disease from spreading and removes hiding places for slugs and snails.
Many people like to start something off early in the greenhouse, so why not try sowing some sweet pea seeds in a cool environment. Use a seed compost and sow them into peat pots, 2 to 3 seeds per pot. When they’re ready for planting out the roots will have grown through the pot and it’s then very easy to just pop the plant into the ground or a container.
Winter wash can be used on a mild day on fruit trees, make sure it’s done before the buds start to burst, this will clear up any pests and their eggs left overwintering on your trees.
If we do get snow in January and February, pop along to the garden centre and pick up sledges, snow shovels and rock salt – all essential in the worst of the winter weather.

Prepare your garden now
for next year’s display
Gardeners don’t stop working in winter; in fact it is just as busy as any other time of the year, if not busier.
By Steve Tonks, General Manager at Boningale Garden Creations
Winter is the perfect time to reassess your outdoor space and look carefully at what changes you can make to ensure your garden is ready for springtime.
Consider your hardscape too – the benches, tables, gazebos, stepping stones, and pergolas. What effect would it have if you moved them around? You might find a change around enhances the space or gives it an entirely new perspective. Could the hardscape benefit from a good clean or a lick of paint? Is there anything that should be replaced to keep the look of the garden fresh?
Does your garden have a good flow? Do you have defined areas to your garden or could it benefit from some additional work? Or do you simply just want a change?
By looking critically at your slumbering garden now means you can reinvigorate it in time for spring and with some careful planning, get your garden to be a space you can enjoy every season.

Meet the boss
by John Nash
(both of them)
‘Best kept secret’ with a nose for success A northern lass, with a background in catering and sales, she is the selfconfessed “engine of development”. Wife of the Vineyards’ wine maker, she fizzes with the creativity that will doubtless see more site evolvement over the coming years. “We’ve already expanded the tearoom into what was the old shop, but I’d like to make a few more changes to take advantage of the spectacular views,” she says. Other plans – she’s not prepared to give the competition a heads-up – remain under wraps. Wine Loft view – Lisa and Clive Vickers with the shop in the background
brew hobby – has morphed into one of the top five award-winning wine producing businesses of the UK.
Award-winning Vineyards: a truly English gem It is, according to its owners, “the best kept secret” of the Midlands – a gem to be discovered where its produce tempts the taste buds and fine wines revive the soul. For some, Halfpenny Green Vineyards still slips beneath the radar despite gaining national and international acclaim for its wines and attracting a growing number of discerning visitors who wish to sample its unique English charm. Afternoon tea with posh cake at this rural retreat with gently undulating views over the Staffordshire and Shropshire countryside really is a must-have. But the experience is more… much more. What started out to be nothing more than a joke – planting half an acre of vines to indulge a home54
On its journey there, this familyrun enterprise has created a farm site hub that offers fine dining, conservatory tea room, an extensive farm shop, popular deli, wine loft (there’s a lift), conference facilities, visitor tours, a thriving craft centre with 15 units and the glorious tranquil option of fishing on three coarse specimen lakes. After 30 years of wine production, the Vineyards is now a serious contender with its bottles to be found at Marks & Spencer – a national endorsement of which the owners are fiercely proud. Today the third generation business, employing more than 40 staff, is run by Clive Vickers and wife Lisa. Taking in the views on the high ground of south facing slopes full of neatly lined vines, Lisa, the visionary behind the more public aspects of the site affairs, says: “I still have to pinch myself. It’s a lovely setting in which to work and I am continually amazed by what we have achieved here over the last 15 years as well as bringing up two daughters. “It’s just a fabulous place to be part of, but so many people come to us and say they never knew we existed and they live right on the doorstep. It really must be the best kept secret…” says Lisa.
Lisa married Clive in 2000 and the family took a brave decision to take her into the business. “Understandably, there were worries for Clive and myself having, as it were, all our eggs in the same basket. The decision was obviously the right one,” she adds with a smile. This year alone she has doubled the shop area and the business footfall is continuing to rise. With a passion for not-on-thehigh-street goods, Lisa’s shop is a cornucopia of desirables. “We have started stocking teas and I have invested a lot of time researching what makes a good brew. Your average supermarket teas are really just the stalk of the tea bush and not the leaf. Birchall use only the top two leaves of the bush. “Our selection is defined not only by its taste, but its colour. When brewed it’s more of a bright, golden colour, rather than the brown we know that is created by the infusion of the inferior stalk of the plants. “I’ve also added traditional sweets – The Big Kids’ Sweet Shop,” she says. Walking through the tearoom conservatory, the barn with its wine loft, the deli and gift shops, the restaurant and function room, every turn is an opportunity for Lisa to muse on future plans. But this outstanding business success story might never have happened had Clive’s father, Martin, been inclined to take his son’s counsel.
town & village life magazine | january/february 2016
It was a hugely rewarding outcome for the family who has been entering their wines every year for more than 30 years. Perhaps one of the youngest experienced winemakers in the country, with 21 vintages under his belt – Clive says the secret of a good wine is 80 per cent the quality of the grapes, including the growing conditions of the particular year. “The remaining 20 per cent involves all of the nuanced aspects of winemaking that take place between harvest and bottling,” he adds. Hidden gem – Clive & Lisa take the high ground overlooking one of the lakes & vine planting
Martin, who still plays an active role in the business and lives on site, was a home-brew enthusiast. “The kind of winemaker where demijohns explode under the stairs,” Clive recalls. “In 1983 I helped him plant the first vines. I had to dig 400 holes and I thought dad had gone insane. The farm here was a traditional arable business. “There was no great diversification plan and the half-acre planting was no risk, but three years later we planted another half-acre on the back of producing 100 bottles that were consumed by the family,” he adds. Between 1994 and 2000 the focus of business was clearly changing, with a proper winery installed and a restaurant extension. More major development followed with a large, airy conservatory being added in 2005, followed by an increase in vineyard acreage and a state of the art winery being built, the latter being doubled in size in 2009 and again in 2013.
The business has made national and regional headlines and has been featured on TV for its award-winning wines. Last year the Vineyards took 26 prestigious awards for their wines on both a national and international level across four major wine competitions. Wines from all over the world, including Old World wine countries such as France and Italy, were judged in the Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine Challenge, which saw the Vineyards take a Silver and two Bronze awards, respectively. Next came the UK Vineyard Awards, where Clive and his team’s knowhow saw them scoop no less than eight medals, including four Silvers and three Bronze. The year rounded out with an unprecedented 11 medals at the Mercian Vineyard Awards, including a Gold medal and trophy for its new dry white wine, Mercia 2014.
“Of course that 20 per cent also involves experience, knowledge, innovation and having state of the art kit.” In recent years the winery produced a red wine called Rondo with an alcohol level of 15 percent, which won a Silver at the Decanter World Wine Awards. An Indian summer in 2011 that saw record sunshine levels in September helped produce exceptionally sugar-rich grapes. Clive says: “It’s very unusual for an English red to be so high in alcohol, and it’s a first in our 30 year history.” Another unusually warm summer graced the Vineyards in 2014 resulting in another 15 percent Rondo, which is currently for sale in a limited run in the farm shop. Climate change indeed appears to be helping produce some better quality UK grapes, but with an M&S endorsement and an emerging market for English wines in India and China, this “best kept secret” seems to be one that an awful lot of people are getting to know.
A function room – The Wine House – has now been added with a viewing area into the winery for those wishing to partake in guided tours and tastings, and the former kennels, cattery and racehorse stables have been converted into craft units, with a new zoo attraction opening in Easter 2016. Currently, as well as processing its own grape harvests, more than 40 other UK vineyards have contracts with Clive and his team to produce their wines, making Halfpenny Green Vineyards one of the largest contract wine producers in the UK. www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk

Which Wine with
What? Choosing wine can be a bit of a minefield, and it’s all too easy to get it wrong. Follow our cheat’s guide to creating the perfect match. Fish course - Delicate fish dishes call for a delicate wine, such as Pinot Grigio. Rich sauces, however, require well-bodied whites like Chardonnay. Serving salty seafood? Champagne works surprisingly well.
work well with lots of veggie dishes, particularly tomato based recipes. Cheese course - There’s no easy answer here. Some cheeses go better with red, some with white. Sauternes and Stilton are a perfect match, while Chardonnay works well with brie. A dry Rosé is a good all-rounder.
Spicy dishes - You’ll want a juicy, spicy wine to complement these dishes. Look for a Malbec or Syrah. Alternatively, a dry Riesling works well with spicy veggie recipes.
In general, the main rule is to pair the characteristics of the dish with the characteristics of the wine. Buttery sauces work well with buttery whites, for example. Have fun with your choices and enjoy!
Juicy red meat - Bring out a rich red, such as a Bordeaux or Cabernet Sauvignon. Turkey - Choose a fullflavoured white, like a white Côtes du Rhône, or a delicate red, such as a Frappato. Veggie main - There is a misconception that vegetarian food should only be paired with white wine. In actual fact, medium reds 56

The French Connection Bistro ‘Stourbridge’s best kept secret’ Situated in Coventry Street, Stourbridge, The French Connection is now the longest established restaurant in the town. This quaint eatery originally opened in 1986 with present owners Christopher and Collette taking over in 2000. Christopher Garner says “We are often asked what is the connection with France” the answer is simple, Colette and I have always been huge fans of the French way of life, the food and drink and the
French countryside, so much so that in 1993 we bought a tiny farm worker’s cottage set in the rural landscape in the old kingdom of Gascony in south west France. “Since then the Gascon influence has coloured much of what we do here at the French Connection, we stock wines from the area, the Cote de Gascogne, which have quite recently started to receive the recognition for quality that we have always said was their due. The food we serve is also heavily influenced by the local cuisine and we are indebted to our friend, a chef from the local village, Jean Paul, who has provided us with many recipes and also lessons in preparation and cooking, usually whilst enjoying a glass or three of something local!
also have dishes from Burgundy, Normandy and Brittany, the Mediterranean and from close to the Spanish border, Basque country. Some of our dishes are from locally sourced fresh produce and some from preserved food sourced in France and all of them are freshly prepared by our team of chefs led by Phillip who has been with us from the outset. “We like to ring the changes with our menus on a regular basis and apart from the a la carte menu we also have the “Menu Rouge” that changes fortnightly, we also hold theme evenings based either on a particular part and cuisine of France, or sometimes on a particular restaurant that we have discovered on our travels. We have several plans for new events including live music and a very French supper club which would meet monthly. “Now Stourbridge has an extra 500 car park spaces under Tesco that are free for three hours there is no better time to consider visiting the town. Why not come in for breakfast and then shop, or shop and come in for a proper laid back French Lunch. You won’t be disappointed!”

Bravo! By Geoff Hall
And Steve Bull is now looking for a business partner to help take the business to a new level.
The dream team, Steve, Ender & Mario
Brimming with confidence after celebrating its fourth year in business in December last year, Bravaccio’s restaurant continues to go from strength to strength in 2016. Much change is afoot at the popular eatery, with upcoming extended opening hours, new staff members, as well as the addition of some all-new al fresco dining space, just in time for spring. The popular restaurant, which is famous for top-notch Italian cuisine and owned by former Wolves and England football supremo Steve Bull, has quickly worked its way into the hearts and minds of locals since it first opened its doors at the Upper Green, Tettenhall site on 1st December 2011.
Mark, both now ably assisted by new apprentice chef Kate. Having so quickly built a reputation as one of the top places to eat in Wolverhampton, no-one at the restaurant is ready to rest on their laurels. So now Bravaccio’s will soon be introducing new longer opening hours, including daytimes. Improvements will be forthcoming to the premises, with an expansion in the offing at the rear of the site to accommodate an outside dining space. Furthermore, Ender Calistir is joining the front of house team as restaurant manager. He has vast experience in the trade, having previously worked at Miller & Carter and at Zest for 8 years.
He says: “I would just love to take the restaurant to the next level and to do that I realise we could do with an experienced investor to join the team and become a partner. “The restaurant is a fun place to be and we are lucky to have such a tremendous bunch of people around us. Mario is top class, as is everybody who works here. I am excited that Ender is coming to join us too, as I know he has a wealth of experience and is very good at what he does. “We have come a long way in a relatively short time and have learned a lot along the way. We pride ourselves in trying to offer value-for-money food, backed up with excellent service in lovely surroundings. “Exciting times lie ahead.” You said it, Steve.
Of course, its loyal customer fan base doesn’t only consist of knowledgeable locals – there’s notable away support too, with many regular patrons happy to travel far and wide to savour the culinary delights conjured up by Head Chef Mario Bennescuitti and his assistant of 20 years,

Patshull Park H O T E L
By Rob Taylor
Away from the hustle and bustle of the Wolverhampton metropolis is an elegant enclave encircled by rolling countryside and swan-topped lakes. Locals know it more intimately as Patshull Park Hotel and – after spending a recent Sunday lunchtime inside the Lakeside Restaurant – I heartily recommend that you get to know it too. But, before I get ahead of myself, here’s some background. Always a popular destination, the complex has garnered a loyal following over the years for myriad reasons: you have the golfers who are keen to master its challenging course; fitness club members, keen to take advantage of the Star Trac cardio equipment, 15-metre heated indoor pool, Jacuzzi and beauty therapy rooms; the many party-goers keen to take in top visiting entertainment like the recent Take That tribute band or to hold their own private function; the long-standing regulars who swear there is just no other place like it when it comes to quality traditional values and refinement; the socialites hungry to be seen when they are dropped off by their drivers outside the impressive entrance façade and then there’s the just plain hungry. I am today, I must confess, among the latter.
But don’t think that just because of that I’m unfit to discern the difference between my experience at Patshull and the typically woeful “pack ’em in to the rafters and feed ’em at a trough” Sunday lunches which are served elsewhere. Restaurant manager Yvonne is our genial host and, after taking our coats, she invites my girlfriend Nicola and I to have a drink at the adjacent bar, while we look over the ‘Three-course lunch including filter coffee or tea’ menu. Priced at £19.95 per person, my first thought is that – given how appetising and expansive the menu seems – this represents rather good value for money. And things get even better with a January-only special offer that serves up the same three courses for just £30 for 2. Before I can fully soak up the charms of the relaxed lounge space, which provides the link
between restaurant and bar, we are shown to our dining table. Immediately I am struck by a warm and homely feel inside, full of regular diners, laughing merrily and gobbling up their starters. However, the generous dining space is at this point still rather quiet, since we are among the earliest visitors. Seated at an immaculately presented table beside panoramic windows overlooking the lake, I am struck by a strong sense of serenity, entirely at odds with the raucous racket attendant at so many venues at this time on a Sunday. The charming addition of a live pianist adds enormously to the ambience and already almost in itself sets the restaurant apart. This, when coupled with the very friendly staff, helps to create a very welcoming and homely atmosphere. For many it is as inviting as a trip to visit close family. Except in this dining room there is space for nearly 200 guests and no one ever falls to sleep in front of the TV. Because, happily, there isn’t one. There is here instead an accent on what’s really most important; what makes regular diners come back year after year – I overhear one diner request a reservation for Christmas Day lunch 2016!; what makes many of the staff who work here stay for almost all of their working lives, like 22-year veteran, Operations Manager, Simon Ward. He says: “We pride ourselves on traditional, old-fashioned values centred around providing the very best personal service to our clients. “We have a very experienced team of staff who work tirelessly to

adhere to this ethos and after so many years we are very proud to be still here. So many of our clients return again and again and that’s proof that we are doing something. “We’re very keen to let readers know that we’re still here and more keen than ever to open the place up to those people who have yet to experience what we have in store for them at Patshull Park.” Let me tell you that the food served at Patshull is sensational and testament to the ethos of appreciating talented staff (Head Chef Terry Maylon has been here for over 10 years), so that they in turn can pass the rewards back to the customer. And boy are there rewards! My ‘Fresh Water Prawns – served with a leaf salad and citrus dressing’ arrest my taste-buds, tantalise my palate and lead me to eulogise about not a lot else until the mains arrive. Similarly Nicola’s ‘Seasonal Melon – with mixed berry and mulled wine compote and mango puree’ brings much acclaim. Every morsel is hoovered up in record time.
is a triumphant addition to the dish; the fish is tender and moist. The turkey, I am reliably told, is succulent and moist; the potatoes, we agree, are soft and pillowy; the carrots, crisp and parsnips, perfect. Nicola is at a loss and can pay no greater compliment than by ranking it among her top five ever turkey dinners. Let me assure you: every component of this delicious ambrosia is devoured.
up-tempo gaiety, orchestrating every guest’s mood and mindset, ensuring that everyone enjoys that unmistakeable Sunday feeling.
As our desserts appear – two ‘Chocolate Bavarois with cherry coulis’ – restaurant numbers begin to swell, as many large parties of hungry diners arrive, eagerly seeking shelter from the cold snap outside. Yet none of the warmth and intimacy of the restaurant is lost, as Richard the pianist, just switches tempo from soft melancholy to

It’s very impressive – as is our sexy, smooth-bodied dessert – and gives us much to ponder as we sip coffee and relax in the lounge later on. Chiefly two questions are on our lips: why have we not been here before? And when is the earliest we can come back?

The Rotary Club of Kinver “Voice of the balls” leaves Kinver with £2,900 A total of 160 generous – and in many cases knowledgeable – quizzers descended on Kinver to take part in Kinver Rotary Club’s annual Children in Need quiz hosted by Alan Dedicoat, the “Voice of the Balls” He left the event carrying £2,906 which comprised entrance fees paid by the teams, the proceeds of a bucket collection by Alan and cheque presentations. Mike Deathridge, quiz organiser (seated left) with president Roy Sanders and Alan Dedicoat. Holding the cheque Julia Roseblade, head teacher at Goldthorne Park School and Clive Corbett, head at Pershore College
These were made by Clive Corbett, the Kinver Rotarian who is head teacher at Pershore High School who handed over £1,250 raised by the pupils and Julia Roseblade, wife of past president Clive Roseblade, who presented £400 collected at Goldthorne Park School in Wolverhampton where she is head teacher.
“The addition of the cheques from the two schools really made Alan’s journey worthwhile.”
Commenting on this, the 15th successful event, club President Roy Sanders said: “Yet another full house at the KSCA Marsh Centre from teams across a wide area who support us each year resulted in the quiz itself again raising £1,256.
Alan told the audience that the quiz he brought to Kinver in 2001 was the first in what has become a series of annual events at organisations across the country. However Kinver remained the largest and most profitable he undertook.

ST. VALENTINE’S DAY
A MYSTERY OF LOVE
As a nation we are not particularly prone to celebrating saints’ days. We don’t do as many parts of Europe do, hold fun-filled festivals to celebrate this or that saint’s memory. Few of us celebrate a saint’s day dedicated to ourselves as they do in France say. Indeed if you asked the average person-in-the-street to name any saint and the day he or she is celebrated, St.Valentine’s Day would probably be the only one they could name with any certainty. Stranger still is the fact that this particular saint is no longer included on the Vatican’s ‘official’ list of saints. So who was this extraordinarily persistent saint, when did he live? Where did he come from? And why for goodness’ sake, does he represent everlasting and passionate love? There are several candidates. Some say he was a bishop from Terni who met a martyr’s death in Rome either during the time of Claudius the Second or perhaps Aurelian. If during the latter’s period of influence, then the date has been set at AD 271 with the event actually occurring on February 14th. Then there was a Roman priest martyred for his faith in AD 269, 68
an Umbrian bishop executed in AD 273 and any of a series of nameless centurions who followed their Christian loved ones into the arena when they were condemned to martyrdom for their beliefs. Trying to relate the dates of these martyrs to February 14th is hardly possible because the calendar has been changed radically since those ancient times. February 15th saw the start of the Roman festival of Lupercalia which was a favourite time for Roman emperors to stage mass executions for the edification of the Roman people. The Lupercalia was also a festival dedicated to the celebration of fertility and indirectly love. Young men roamed the streets dressed in the skins of sacrificial animals, in pursuit of any woman or girl they could catch. Any female touched by one of these young men was assured of her fertility in the coming year - for one reason or another! The river god Pan was also said to roam abroad at this time and could be encountered in the reeds by rivers and streams. Doubtless many an encounter took place but whether Pan was responsible for the result is an open question! The Romans brought the Lupercalia to Britain but it is pretty certain that a similar festival pre-dated its arrival. The Romans as usual, simply mixed
and matched both religions and festivals and added them to their own extensive pantheon of gods and list of celebratory events. It is an interesting fact that only in Britain is this festival still observed. A similar custom once observed in France on the 1st day in Lent and dedicated to Pan and Juno is long defunct. When trying to trace the shadowy figure behind the legend, the fact that Roman soldiers were the main celebrants of the day does indicate a connection with that unfortunate centurion, though whether he died voluntarily for love, was executed for some misdemeanour or was killed accidentally while shepherding his prisoners into the arena, will probably never be known. The truth is the day is probably a composite of several Pagan festivals, Christianised at some time by missionaries in the way they did at the time and given the name of some unfortunate martyr who just happened to meet his death at around the appropriate date. The Lupercalia itself was eventually superseded by the Feast of Candlemass, and St.Valentine, whoever he was, was left on the calendar of saints because there was simply no one else to claim the day. One thing is certain, if he did indeed exist as a person, he would have been amazed to know how long his sacrifice would be remembered.

Break your bad beauty habits by Helen Taylor
Courtesy of New Topshop Beauty’
The Solution
Try something new Try a new style - maybe sweep your hair up, or use hair accessories to attain a different look. Find products that cater to your needs; if you want straight lengths then use a straightening shampoo and conditioner. You don’t have to say goodbye to your much-loved heat styler altogether, instead use it more sparingly and ensure that you spritz your hair with a heat protecting product first.
Bad Beauty Habit #3
Using make-up that is past its best Some plead ignorance, others say they can’t let go, but whatever excuse you’ve got for not throwing that ancient mascara away won’t cut it when you hear the truth about out-of-date make-up. Although your cosmetics look innocent enough, after being opened they offer a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. And over time, you can end up suffering from some seriously nasty eye infections, skin irritations and blemishes.
The Solution
Regularly clear-out your make-up bag Mascaras, liquid eyeliners and lip glosses should be thrown away every 3 or 4 months. Foundation is ok for around 12 months, as are lipsticks and eyeshadows.
It’s the start of another new year, which means that there has never been a better time to leave your bad beauty habits in the past.
Getting stuck in a make-up rut
Here’s how to do it:
You’ve been applying your make-up the same way for as long as you can remember. You haven’t updated the colour of your cosmetics for many years and you’ll only ever buy certain products.
Bad Beauty Habit #1
It sounds like you’re stuck in a make-up rut.
Sleeping with your make-up on Never - no matter how tired you are - go to bed with any trace of make-up still on your face. Mascara that hasn’t been removed will quickly dry-out your eyelashes, making them brittle and weak. Last night’s foundation will clog your pores, leaving you prone to nasty break-outs.
The Solution
The Solution
Get a professional opinion The easiest way to break this bad beauty habit is to seek some professional help. Visit any one of the top beauty counters in your favourite department store and ask for a make-over. Most consultants will be more than happy to help you find a new-look and often this service is free.
Bad Beauty Habit #5
Establish a cleansing routine
Overlooking your eyebrows
Make cleansing your face a priority. Dedicate 15 minutes in the evening to your skin: cleanse, tone, moisturise and apply your face and eye creams.
Over-plucked brows are as bad as over-grown brows; many women make mistakes when it comes to one of their most important facial features.
Always keep a pack of cleansing wipes next to your bed, so that if you return home after a big night out you can still attempt to remove some of your make-up.
Eyebrows serve as a frame for your eyes and by creating the right shape you can instantly lift your face, draw attention to your eyes and look altogether more beautiful.
Bad Beauty Habit #2
The Solution
Using heat stylers on your hair everyday If you straighten, curl or blow dry your hair every day you will be causing damage to your tresses that could result in split ends, dried-out lengths and dull-looking locks. 72

KEEPING FIT & WELL
CAN BRING MORE THAN JUST HEALTH BENEFITS only eight per cent of us will actually keep our New Year’s resolutions,” explained Paycare CEO, Kevin Rogers. “But it doesn’t have to be like that. Breaking bad habits and picking up better ones requires an action plan, and more importantly – it requires taking responsibility for implementing that plan, one step at a time.
Joining a gym, quitting smoking or giving up chocolate are all popular New Year’s resolutions, but the start of 2016 is also the perfect opportunity for local residents to reflect on how their health and wellbeing impacts the wider picture, and
even the business that they work within. Leading Wolverhampton-based health cover provider, Paycare, is reminding those across the region of the importance of looking after their own health to not only see them become more productive at work (which in turn will lead to increased benefits and even a pay rise), but to positively impact those around them too. “Whilst many of us have good intentions at the start of January,
“There’s plenty of literature available about creating an action plan for your goals, but it’s always worth making sure that they’re ‘SMART’, or ‘specific’, ‘measurable’, ‘actionable’, ‘realistic’ and ‘time-bound’. “For more general health and wellbeing goals, it pays to know that Paycare offers a range of health cash plans for individuals, families, over 64s and under 25s, helping you meet everyday costs such as dental and optical checkups, or even professional therapies like physiotherapy and osteopathy. “Ultimately, everyone holds a unique position both within the business they work in and within their respective families, which they can positively influence simply by taking care of themselves. “I’d encourage those interested in finding out more to call 01902 371000, email enquiries@ paycare.org, or visit www. paycare.org,” Kevin concluded. A well-respected and dedicated not-for-profit health cover provider, Paycare has helped individuals, families and businesses across the Black Country and Wolverhampton protect themselves against everyday healthcare costs and bills for over 140 years.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot? New Year, new start For many people, the New Year heralds a new beginning and is a time to assess how life is progressing. It provides an opportunity to reflect on existing relationships and make decisions about the future. As an inevitable part of this process, there are a significant number of people who decide that they wish to separate. If you have reached this decision, then your next step should be to consult a Family Lawyer.
How can we help? At Thursfields, we understand that Family matters can be extremely complicated and there are often sensitive issues. We recognise that a large proportion of our client base will be extremely vulnerable. We provide tailored advice to each of our clients whatever their legal needs. All of our lawyers are technically excellent and work to a high standard with over 90 years of experience between them. Whatever your circumstances, our lawyers will have seen it before 86
and will know what to do. They understand that your situation is unique to you and they will advise on the right solution for you. Helen Hanson is a family lawyer based at our Kinver office who specialises in divorce and the financial aspect of the breakdown of a relationship. She says: “A divorce does not have to be acrimonious or costly. I pride myself on taking a pragmatic approach to resolving any dispute that arises. I have over 10 years experience in dealing with the breakdown of a marriage and as a result of my expertise, I have been accredited with the Family Law Advanced Accreditation.” We offer a competitive fixed fee for advising and assisting you through the divorce procedure and can provide transparent estimations for other work that we undertake.
Arrangements for the children In addition to divorce and finances, there are often significant decisions with regard
to arrangements for the children. At Thursfields, we have dedicated children lawyers, who can advise on this specialist area. Sarah Mason, children expert says: “I believe that during any family breakdown, children need their own particular focus. Failing to protect their needs at such a difficult time can lead to irreparable damage. It is important to obtain the appropriate advice to ensure that your children can remain happy and reassured.” At Thursfields, whilst we are sensitive enough to understand that divorce is emotionally challenging, we believe that we can help you to ultimately see separation as the possibility for a new start and a happier future. Make an appointment to see one of our Family Specialists today at our Kinver Office (85 High Street Kinver DY7 6HD). Alternatively telephone us on 01384 883415 or 01562 820575.

Education
and Schooling
by David Williams – Headmaster of Tettenhall College centres and an international airport. The aerial shot of the College and its playing fields and greenery is a welcome and impressive site for someone brought up in Ho Chi Minh City or Guangzhou. What we are also offering are the benefits of travel and experiencing life in another country. It is most satisfying to see the development of a Thai, Russian, Serbian or Chinese pupil who may have come from a school of 3000 plus pupils flourishing linguistically and intellectually in a very different environment. Of course, the simple act of experiencing another country and culture is in itself educational and this is something that is part of lifelong learning ought to be continued until one is no longer capable of doing so. My most recent trip took me to Nigeria where a group of teachers from these shores provided training and idea exchanges for Nigerian teachers in Lagos and Abuja. Despite pleas from family, colleagues and friends not to go the whole experience of visiting such a vast and vibrant country was unforgettable as was the welcome from the Nigerian people. Despite the challenges of the traffic in Lagos that defies description, probably the worst airport experience you could have and the difficulty in sometimes accomplishing basic tasks on time, it is somewhere that I will undoubtedly return to.
David Williams with teachers in Nigeria
I am fortunate as part of our international recruitment strategy at Tettenhall College to have the opportunity to visit several countries and meet pupils, parents, agents and teachers who see the value of a UK independent school education. The history of our country and schools, pupilcentred learning, smaller schools and class sizes coupled with a respected tradition that focuses on the development of the whole person including the opportunity for sports, the arts and outdoor education make our sector an attractive proposition. Our thriving and friendly boarding community also provides an excellent supportive environment for those making a first step here before, in the majority of cases, applying for a university in the UK. Black Country locals may also be interested to note that Tettenhall village and Wolverhampton provide a highly attractive location for international pupils providing the “best of both worlds” with a safe secure situation but proximity to lively urban 88
The trip also further emphasised the value of moving out of the comfort of one’s existence, as do the international pupils at Tettenhall College, to experience another culture, geography and climate. It also made me reflect on our duty as educationalists to ensure that the pupils in our care are encouraged to open their minds in a similar way; be it independently of the school or facilitated by the dwindling band of teachers who refuse to be scared off by risk assessments, health and safety requirements and pressures of curriculum time. Sadly, we can also add the threat of terrorist attack to the list of deterrents where school trip staples such as Paris become potentially off-limits. Yet, we are pleased that visits to foreign climesyes, some more ambitious and therefore costly but others more accessible such as the World War 1 Battlefields-form part of our offering. Not only do these trips bring alive the classroom and illuminate the subject but they may also act as an inspiration for a career, calling or experience later in life. Isn’t that what education should be about? You can now follow David on Twitter

Sweetly Swedish
By Rob Taylor
History has not been kind to the big old Volvos of the late eighties and early nineties: those designed with a ruler and set square, driven almost exclusively by Geography teachers and beloved by Fido for boot-space alone. Stronger than Hercules and packing more metal than Metallica, they were at all times - not just during a thunderstorm - the safest place to be on the road, but never the coolest. Yet today’s Volvo is a different matter. Today anyone behind a wheel emblazoned with the Chineseowned Swedish marque’s logo can consider themselves cooler than a snow-topped Scandinavian pine tree. Buying a Volvo is a demonstrably intelligent and left-field thing to do and implicitly shows taste and discerning, as opposed to pack-following. Though not quite a Swedish sexbomb, the brand new Volvo XC90 D5 Inscription AWD Geartronic is a handsome machine that perfectly captures the zeitgeist. But with a Scandinavian twist. And the best thing is, sensible-shoes car buyers still have all of the very latest crash and safety technology www.townandvillagelifemag.co.uk
to protect them, because Volvo still leads the field in this arena. The company boasts that no one will be killed in a new Volvo from 2020 onwards, and somehow that seemingly impossible statement seems faintly possible. There are so many cutting-edge safety features on this flagship SUV that I daren’t even attempt to list them all here: just suffice it to say that many of them are revolutionary and stem from extensive investigation into realworld crashes, as opposed to the more common laboratory testing. This D5 model is pricey, starting at £45,550, but it feels worth it, especially inside, where in search of a premium aesthetic, Volvo has forged its own way, rather than copying Audi et al. And, boy, has it succeeded. The new ‘Human Machine Interface’ central command system is incredibly intuitive and easy to use; the cabin is beautifully made with top-notch materials. It’s simply a symphony of ergonomic genius at work inside: everything is precisely where it ought to be. Like the very best kind of butler, the XC90 keeps a very well organised and logically laid-out “driving space”. Every switch is exquisitely tactile and within easy reach; everything is well lit and intelligently set up. And
there really is seating for seven adults and luggage in the boot, to boot. All wheel drive sees the XC90 command the road with unerring levels of grip. Stable in all weather and with a supple and absorbent air-suspension set-up despite the 20” alloys, it is more than able to keep every pothole and road gremlin out of the cabin. This leviathan can hit 60 mph from zero in 7.8 seconds and reach 137 mph, courtesy of a modest 2 litre 225 bhp four cylinder diesel engine. You may not buy this car with your heart but for your head, it’s a nobrainer - that is, if you are loathe to mix it with the enfeebled dullards who covet anything German just because Mr and Mrs Next-Door own one. Admittedly this particular D5 model will not be for everyone, as it’s not a sporty vehicle - there is a sportier 320 bhp T6 petrol version, among others - but that won’t return 48.7 mpg and emit just 152 g/km of co2. And besides, anyone who wants to hustle this car along is entirely missing the point. The XC90 is designed to soothe and protect; to be functional and not flashy. Prepare to meet the newest - and best - member of the SUV family. 95
